Hello Mylotters,
I have observed many times that there are some areas where i feel my boss has lesser knowledge. He don't have the average knowledge in those areas.
In my opinion when you are sitting at the post of a UNIT HEAD then you must have at least average knowledge of all areas like Production, quality, planning, systems etc.If your boss don't have then you can't expect him to support you and feel like boss of your own area and you have to see things at your level only. This happens with me many times i feel like it and gives me the feeling that i am boss of my own.
How do you feel when something like this happens to you????

One cannot assess a boss against the one who is reporting to him for the simple reason that the job description of someone who is higher cannot be compared with the one who is working under him. There will be many reporting and each one would have their specific job description and the boss would have to oversee the work of all those. This is my view.

Bosses are not supposed to be experts. For example, have you ever heard of a Managing Director being an expert at R&D? And yet he will be overseeing the R&D Chief.

Hello sjvg!
Yes this does happen in a lot of businesses because many bosses/owners/managers do not know their own businesses well. Many think that all they have to do is own and or be the manager and allow the employees to run it all. As for me I am the type that has to know it all. Each and every corner of a business before I can show others how to run the business.
Shame that a Manager sometimes does not even know how to use the office equipment and relies on others to do it all. These are not very good managers as when the business some day is without the valuable employee the manager is completely lost, causing the business not to run well.

Hello HWG,
Yes to be an owner/manager is not sufficient you should have knowledge about all areas so that your juniors/employees may not make fool of yours. As i have seen it that if your BOSS knows little then you can sometimes manipulate the things easily. And if the employees start doing it frequently certainly company or business will definitely go down.

I assume it is the reason why you are hired and get pay for your superior knowledge. But don't feel over pride on yourself. Your boss is running a business empire while you are managing a company department, it isn't necessary that you are a lot better than him in term of cleverness and intelligent just because you have experience in the related work.

I had a response all typed up but the computer malfunctioned for a second and I can't paste my response in here so forgive the shortened response.
As the owner of a small business, I intentionally hire people that know more than I do. Then I educate the further. I want them to do the job to the best of their ability and that is why I hire them. If I could do it all myself I'd have no need for them. Bosses aren't perfect and we're not all-knowing. We hire employees to pick up what we cannot do.
For example, I am colorblind and completely unartistic so I can't do web design but I understand website psychology.
As an employee you serve a valuable function, otherwise you wouldn't be there. If your boss's lack of knowledge gets in the way of you doing your job, then it might be time for you to look for another boss. Otherwise, you should realize the fact that your boss needs to to perform the job function that you were hired for.

Hello tim,
But there is difference in the owner and the employee. My BOSS is an employee.
My owner also do not have much knowledge about the product we make but certainly he has kept many highly qualified people to sort out the problems which comes on daily basis.

That's a tough one! Your boss probably takes credit for others work too. Try to make your work more visual so people start realizing that you are the one doing all the work. After you have learned all you can start looking for another position whereyou can be the boss.

hello sjvg,
If i feel that my boss has lesser knowledge and I feel I am a better than...guess I will submit my CV to the higher level and apply for his position
Seriously, maybe few bosses are really acting like they know it all,but they're also weaker in some areas and we feel that we are better.
There is always a right time for everything, who knows if you show your best, one day you will see yourself in your boss's position

I think there must be a lot of boss like this in the world. They have high position or become boss simply because they have encountered someone who helped them a lot like their parents. However, I think you should pretend to be less capable. Otherwise, your boss will find you threatening and fire you. Remove him at approprieate time and what you have to do is just to wait for the chance. I am sure you can get his position or even higher if you are clever. Remember also, you have to know who to use and who can help you with this because a good leader can make good use of people as well.

Hello 06MLam,
Thats right most of the bosses are like this as i have seen lot of bosses in my carrier but management think they deserve to be boss may be because of their experience but i believe they should see/judge knowledge also before making them the boss.

I am a student. I have many bosses. They are my teachers. I always feel they are worse than me. Well, I feel frustrated sometimes. But I choose to be positive. After all they are my teachers. The best thing I can do is not to attend the class.
