The Book of Mormon: fears, questions and what can I use?

I just started reading The Book of Mormon, not with faith, only as a student of religion. Truthfully, I'm just skimming, but I think I'm doing okay.
If you are not familiar with it, what does your limited knowledge lead you to believe: Is it pure imagination thinking Jesus appeared in North America? Does anyone believe a tribe of Isrealites moved to the New World hundreds of years BC?
If you are a believer or a student of Mormon philosophy, what should I look for? What should I take away as the key points?
Your friend in philosophy,
The Pious Rat

I read the book some years ago. I visited one of their temples. I have had some discussions with missionaries that have either come to my door or met them on the streets. I have had a number of business acquaintances who were Mormons. I have found them to be nice people.
I would say, read the book, speak to some Mormons, do some research and come to your own conclusions.

I don't have a problem with the fact that they visit others to share their faith. Jesus did it too and encouraged his followers to do the same. I don't think the Mormons have the truth but they think the same about me. All the best!

I've known a few very nice Mormons. I don't agree with their proseltyzing style, but their lifestyles are very empathetic to others. I thought I should read the book and see if it really is any different from other religious texts or, as is the case for the rest of Christianity, it all comes down to interprettation.

I haven't read the book of Mormon yet though I own a copy of it,but I read a book about Elisa Hall,an activist from the Church of the Later Day Saints a sect of the Mormon Church. It made me question my own belief because there are some similarities. However,I later think that I never want to be acquianted with a church like that, where every decision depends on a prophet.I think it's a cult rather than a religion. It is design to benefit the leaders of the church, rather than worshipping God.

I'm positive the Mormons started as a cult, but unlike most cults, this group evolved into a seemingly valuable aand definitely viable religion. The Mormon dedication to ancestry alone has made them valuable to my family so I feel it won't hurt me to learn more about them.

Supposing Jesus did appear in North America, would this mean anything at all in the Grande Scheme of Things? And be thankful that the tribe of Israelites didn't screw up America as they have Israel? However as this is all supposition its not going to make the least difference one way or the other. Just read the Book, enjoy your read, and think of it as just another Grande Farce!

Grande Farce wise, you have to read the introductions to The Book of Mormon to really appreciate the comedic value of Joseph Smith.

I admire your desire to research the Mormon religion. I have no advice. I wish I could help you out. But I don't know that much about the religion. I believe some of the information we receive from the media is acturate and some is not accurate. I believe that some of the members have some false beliefs they act on and other get hurt in return. This is not a religion I want to involved in. I know there are good believers and bad believers but how do you sift through the garbage to find a good believer. Good luck at your search for knowledge with the Book of Mormon. Best Wishes!

I don't know that I'm learning anything, but it exists therefore I'm curious.
