Martial arts have come so extreme since the old days of conventional forms and kung fu. I can still remember when everybody referred to every martial art as karate, kung fu or judo. Well, things have changed; or evolved in fact. Numerous styles of self-defense are put to the trial in modern times, and lots of have been proven inadequate. In fact all of them have in one way or another. What we have to understand is that all styles are not created the same, all self defense moves are not high gain, and mastering a martial art will not make you invincible to attack. In realism anyone can lose in a physical argument. Your brain is so much more dominant than most folks give it credit for. Would you be surprised to find out that great self defense moves are not the answer to surviving the streets? Definite, they play a part in protecting yourself from attackers, but they're not the main reason. Knowing your surroundings, being conscious of your surroundings, and knowing where not to gamble at certain times are critical. And also, it's very important to follow your fortitude. If your instinct steers you in one direction, pay attention. It's there to support you in staying safe.

martial arts is not only focus on defensive and offensive movements it includes discipline, mind and body working as one. especially kung fu,teaches steps and figures, meditations, energy and mind power..in short kung fu is fighting force with brains.

learning kung fu not so much to defeat an opponent, as it is to conquer yourself...
fight and win a billions of wars is not good,
it is better to win a combat without fighting....
use your martial arts (kung fu) as a last recourse,
don't use your kungfu inside the ring,
where every people enjoy while your hurting your opponent,
and while your opponent also hurting you,
the more the people watching boxing enjoys if there is blood, knock out, black eyes,
there is no martial arts in a ring fights but only martial sports...
you learn kung fu in order to finish your studies, get a good job, a permanent job, have a good family, a good fortune...
and not learning boxing just to beat the opponent and brawls in the ultimate fighting championship (ufc)
learn martial arts for health.... to conquer yourself is the best achievements.

Yes,i agree with you, kung fu is not use in a violent way. but some use kung fu in making films. making fighting scene look amazing to the audience.and lots of people watch movies with fights like any form of martial arts.

back to the old drawing board,
the reason why the Chinese Martial Arts Kung Fu community hated Bruce Lee so much because Bruce Lee exposed the art of Kung Fu (especially Wing Chun to kept it secret) in:
1. Movie Films
2. Interviews
3. Kung Fu Clubs
Kung Fu should be taught in a secretive way, and not to teach those foreigners...
because foreigners what they only know is only Karate, and Judo, and nothing more...
and ignorant in Kung Fu.....
and that is the reason why they send a Chinese Kung Fu Fighter Wong Jack Man to match fight with Bruce Lee Siu Long for a conditional cause....

I think that perhaps it is like yoga in that there are several different types and teachers. One person might find one teacher more to their liking than another one. ANd there for would get more out of it. I think that the basics are very important and the disciplines.

All people, especially women, should do this, and I say this because of the fact that with so many crazy people on the loose nowadays, you never know when self-defense might come in handy. I took it after what happened to me, and I can promise that I will never let something like that happen to me ever again.

I do agree with you. Each style have it own strength and weakness. It also depends on how good the person is and how many hours he practices his skill. But despite all this, there is no supreme, anything can happen and mistakes are abound most especially when you are caught by surprise. I certainly agree with you that the thinking and planning well your actions is the best way to survive and being safe. We should think and plan ahead our moves. When to go, where to go, to avoid putting ourselves in a situation where our life might be in jeopardy. After all, if there is no fight, there is no risk to life...

and remember too that it takes two for the fight to begin...
meaning, if only one person is around, where's the fight?
the famous Philippine Hero named Jose Rizal says that:
"A Pen is Mightier than a Sword"
Gentleness can be more powerful than force....

A very good self defense is our instinct to follow and be attentive. You are right that our mind is superior and it can do things would like to do by moving our body as help to whole. I was thinking before that the self defense refer only by knowing martial arts and others just to defend ourselves in danger. This very small thinking of mine refers to body movements only without using the mind power. I also now believe that we can use only the mind power as my little idea to defense also and protect ourselves in danger. But as you have said the best is be careful and safe try to look and know where is the best place and surroundings could be. Thanks to your tips!

I would like to study this certain Brazilian martial arts called "capoeira", but I would say, self-defense is not my one of my purpose. I believe that good health, discipline, and the holistic body coordination can be attained through martial arts.

I really want to learn self defense. I had downloaded free ebooks on how to defend yourself to someone who plan to do you bad. But these ebooks are still theory unless you have experience the actual scene. Actually these ebooks stated too that not all self defense class can really help a person. Once the attacker came around, your mind should be alert on what this attacker is planning to do.if we can read minds, there are no problem at all, but we do not so that is the main problem. I think we should always be alert every where we go, you are right we need to be conscious.

i took Aikido which is purely self defense, since i was lil, glad to say it worked. I also have a sharper mind and exert all my energy into what i am doing at that time. it gave me confidence and made my parents feel a safer, esp now that im driving. lol k And i would like to become a black belt in other martial arts. Idk if it is a guarantee that ud be safe, i wouldnt say that but it helps, better than nothing.
