Do you keep all your books? Do you sell them, or do you give them away? I have stored up a lot of my books for years, but am running out of space plus we live in a very dusty area so they gather dust. Previously i have given some books away but have started to think about seling them on ebay or somewhere. What do you do with all your books?

It depends on the book. Some books I like to keep and read again, others are more for reference and of course I keep those. Others, mostly light fiction, I read once then give them away, either to my son or daughter or to a charity for resale. I keep some just because I like them, although I may never read them again. I have sold a few that were popular through Amazon and that worked out well.

i have bought a book from amazon from the US, when i can't find a UK buyer, and if they are happy to sell them to me presumably the postage is enough.

So, you are also facing the dust problem. I try to keep my books clean but since we live very close to a highly congested road, the books get dusty in a matter of hours.
I have bought a lot of books and would have loved to keep them all. But space is a problem. I have a younger cousin and after I have read a book I usually give it to her. I do not sell my books. I usually give them to others for reading and they return it after they have finished. I try to store as much as I can.

Well, it is nice to sell the books and someone else can buy them cheap. Everybody is a winner this way.
You can try ebay and other sites where they let you sell stuff. That might be a good option.
Dust can really ruin the books as I am finding out now. It is a hard job keeping them clean.

I seem to be attached with all my books I don't have the heart to give them away or to sell them. I have a custom made bookshelf for my books covered with glass so they do not get dirty. I am also very delicate with my books and handle them with care when you look at them they still look like no one has ever read them. If storage space is now becoming a problem, try switching to electronic books. you need not have a kindle or a special gadget. you can read them in your laptop or an android phone.

Thanks
Yes I have been thinking about getting an e-reader because my friend always uses one and loves it. I will get an e-reader with an e-ink screen because computers have a lit screen which will be a strain on your eyes if you read your books on them all the time. Using an e-reader is a lot more like reading a book, so you can read in bed and your eyes won't get strained any more than using a bood.

Hello. I still have most of my books. I haven't tried selling yet. I value my things much that it is hard for me to sell. I still have my grade 6 book in English. The book is called Pearl of the Orient Seas. I am sentimentalist. The book has so many short stories and in it in that book that I had developed my love for reading. I also have my anatomy and physiology book, psychology and philosophy college book. I always bring my books when we move places. I exchange my novels to a public school reading center. That is my only way now to read again for I live far from city to buy even just second hand novels.
Yes, you can try selling in online. What type of books are your collections?

I have a lot of crime books - the wire in the blood series, Patricia Cornwell, and Michael Connelly, some Agatha Christie. I also have self help books and my very old uni books (a bit like you). I also have lots of books on cooking and healthy recipes as well as recipes from different countries. I have books on herbs and organic gardening and lots of random books that also seemed good like Paulo Cohello and others.
I don't know if it is easy for you to buy second hand books on line, as that could be a good way for you to get good cheap books even though you don't live in the city. I have bought a few online from ebay.

If I buy books and don't need them any more I carry them to charity shop where they can be sell and the money goes for cancer research, or help for poor. I think this is good idea as in charity shops you can buy cheap book and support some funds. The same I do with unwanted clothes.

It all depends. If I really enjoyed the book and think I will definitely read it again I will keep it. And have read many of my books over and over again. But if I wasnt all that impressed with it or didn't like it I sell it at Half Priced Books.

If I love a book then I keep a copy. If I don't like a book at all, then I'll usually give away or sell the copy not long after I finish reading it. If I merely like a book then it might stay in my collection for a little while and then maybe I'll give it away at some point. I don't really mind being surrounded by books, in fact I think I would say that I love it. I've cleared out my movie shelves and CD shelves for books because I love books so much more than any other form of entertainment. Someday I hope to have a big library in my house. But that'll have to wait until I actually have a house.

I've got heaps of books, but my flat is running out of space since I got a flatmate and I thought books are one of the easiest things to sell. I have many detective/ thriller type books and my friends aren't really into these, so I have thought of trying to sell them. I dont really need to keep a lot of the paperback novels as I have already read them.
I will keep my recipe books, gardening, yoga and other reference books though.

Some of them I resale, others I borrow to other people, others I endow them. The last ones I left them at our public library, so other users may read them.

I keep them & scan them onto computer, later throwing them into the recycle bin to make moving house much easier! I have sold a few privately. Some are so old that I've used them for compost! I didn't think there was much dust up in the tropics where you are? My wife who grew up in Brissy was surprised to see so much recurring dust inside the house when she moved down here with me.
Hope it works out for you! Maybe try simpletrade too? It's free!

I segregate the books that I want to keep and keep them away from the "public eye." The ones I want to give away, I put them in a place where they can be seen. I "lend" the latter to friends, but I don't expect them to be returned, which I also want. This is how I manage my personal "library" and keep the number of volumes down.

That's a good idea. I have lent a couple to my brother in the past, but now he's got an ereader, so he doesn't read printed books any more. The problem with friends with ereaders is that you can't borrow their novels either, unless you also have a reader.

I suggest you sell the ones
you don't need but keep the ones
you'll need in your life.
I like to keep my books with me.
They're just in my personal library
I don't want to sell my books
as I know I'm going to need them all.

i tried out using an ebook reader on my computer, which isn't as good as a proper one. but unfortunately instead of buying all my books as an ebook i carried on buying print copies and instead downloaded lots of free books that i would never have got otherwise.
but it might work for you!

Thanks Francesca
Yes, it is hard to imagine never having any printed books anymore. I think novels are great to read on e-readers, but reference books like manuals and cook books still seem better printed.
One thing about 2 or 3 printed books compared to 2 or 3 books on a reader - different people can easily read the different printed books at the same time, but with the ebooks only people with ereaders can read them.

I keep my books. When friends ask to borrow them, I let them borrow but I take note of which book was taken out and which book was returned. Over the years, I lost track of my lent books. I also run out of a place to store my books. I have three bookshelves and I have nowhere to place my other books anymore so they are scattered under my bed, on top of my dresser, on my bed... I might plan to set up an online bookshop :)

I keep the books that I really like and the ones that I know I am going to read again. The rest of the books I sell or give away to charity. I have sold some of my books online. There is a Danish site where students sell the books that they no longer need, I sold some of the my books about nursing on that site. I have also sold some of my books to a second hand book shop on my island. When we moved my husband and I had a garage sale and we sold many of our old books to people from the neighbourhood. The rest of the books we donated to charity.
