i recently got into a lively discussion about colors of a website.
my buddy says we should get light colored websites
while i stand by the dark colored website
this difference of opinion led us to making a bet.
so... what do you think is the best color for a website? dark colors or light colors? it's gonna be music oriented...

Apparently, if you use dark colours for a website you end up saving a whole lot of energy because it takes less energy to light up a dark website than a light or white one. So if you want to be environmentally friendly - go with the dark colours!

If done right, either one can look good.
I started out with a dark website and then changed it to a light one and I think they both looked good.
I couldn't make up my mind on my new site so I just went with transparent.
lasvegasobserver.com .........actually it's dark (the background)........with A LOT of transparency.

Yes but what kind of music...and even if you are thrash metal, go darker, but don't go too dark, for me anyway I find dark websites hard to read and navigate, and I just don't like they way they feel.
Sincerely and With Appreciation.

just use two or three colors. I disagree about using lively colors, you mean those neon orange? neon green? neon pink? ahahaha!
hhhmmnnn.., using dark colors that jives with the mood of its color is good. Have you tried to visit the website of www.ultimate-guitar.com?
Use one color as a main color and other colors as accessory color of your website. =)

If i were you, i will use black color as background and any combination of RGB colors for the content of the website, it would be nice :)

I'm with your buddy on this one. I've seen lots of dark colored websites where the text was a light color on a dark background. I find it is NOT easy on the eyes, and unless there's something really captivating otherwise to keep me there, I usually don't linger at that site for too long. Same with too much animation on a page, it's hard on the eyes. Now, if the main colors were dark all over, but the text was regular black text on a light background, I find it doesn't bother me as much and I'll probably linger on a site longer just to check out other stuff there.

Well, what does music may you feel? What kind of music is it? I would think that my kind of music would make me think of golden yellow and different shades of green. Even some orange although I don't care for it. That is the celtic music. I think Rock would bring to mind darker colors with red and black even though I hate those colors. BLues and blue grass and rythm and blues would be self explanatory.

In my own opinion, I like it when it looks hot...red for example. It can be orange too with a little black for it's accent. :-)

You should go with a combination of both. The site must be eye-catching, but compatable with a veritiy of screens. Make it to light, then there's a possibility of eyestrain. Make it too dark and your content won't show on some older screens. Remember you don't know who's going to view your website, nor do you know what device they will be using. So you have to account for that as well. Avoid a lot of flash, it slows down a lot of devices, and some web-enabled smart phones don't quite yet support it so the page won't load for them.

There can be differences in selecting a color for a music website, If it caters all kind of music ( Light, Classical, Pop etc) I would suggest white as a color. Other wise you can select the color based on the type of the music your site will have. Red - if dance numbers, Blue if light music etc
why dont you start with white and change the color based on the type of music selected by user.
