HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. Hypertext because it's more powerful than text (it can be formatted to different sizes, styles and colours) and 'Markup Language' because it's based on using 'tags' which are enclosed in angle brackets.
If you want to know more about it (it's not difficult to learn), a good place to start is: http://www.webmonkey.com/kids/ Webmonkey for Kids.

It's the basic 'language' or system that almost every web page is written in and is plain text, so you can actually create a web page using just Notepad and Internet Explorer!
