I don't consider myself a very good artist, but I love to sketch and paint. A while ago I sketched this picture and I would love to know what you think? Should I go on trying to improve my skills or not?

I'll give you my honest opinion as a college level art student. I think the proportions of the figure are fairly accurate, considering you don't think of yourself as a good artist. So good job with that. But I would consider it mediocre. You should try to focus on getting more value ranges instead of outlining everything. Is there any sort of meaning behind the piece? Did you work from a photo reference or did you make this up completely? I definitely think you should go on improving your skills. Don't ever get discouraged!

The picture don't really have any specific meaning, but I drew it from another picture and changed it to my liking. Thank you for the comment though and so you know I didn't get discouraged since I posted this conversation I did do some more work since I started focusing on painting rather than just drawing so I think I did in fact improve somewhat.

You did a pretty good job on this picture. I took art throughout highschool and AP Art History and AP Studio Art Drawing. You have pretty good proportions and what not. Your shading is okay but you need to add more to it. I know you will feel like you are shading way tooo dark but usually you arent you just think you are. right now you only have a good value of grey no black blacks and no really white whites. Also you should never out line things. That is one of the first things that my art teacher taught me. It makes them look alot more childish then they are. use your range of shadings to make it look like there are differnt things there not lines. And your proportions are pretty good the only way to get better at them is to figure out what a persons proportions really are and work on it. Hopefully that helps but just dont give up.
