A team of Indian doctors claims that a single shot of progesterone hormone increases the chances of disease- free survival after surgery for breast cancer. A series of independent studies in the past have suggested that surgery to remove breast tumours itself appears to stimulate metastasis that is the spread of the cancer to distant sites in the body. The Indian researchers believe that progesterone interferes with this process; it puts the tumour to sleep and allows the surgeon to excise the cancerous growth without any apprehension. Although the study raises several questions which are yet to be answered by the researchers, it is no doubt a great achievement which will definitely open a new approach towards the management of breast tumours.
