Gatorade for diarrhea?

Hi myLotters! My nephew is suffering from diarrhea right now his mom is worried sick. The first things she bought is Gatorade so that my nephew won't get dehydrated. I told her not to let him drink it because I saw an interview on TV before and the doctor said that Gatorade should not be administered to patients with diarrhea because it contains too much sugar and it is as good as giving him a bottle of soda. However when I did a research on Google opinions on whether or not to have the patient drink Gatorade as a substitute are contradicting. Some say you should and others say you shouldn't. I want to know, what's your take on this? Thanks.

of course mostly important you should do what ever the doctor says. I have always given my kids Gatorade when they were sick and had diarrhea. Diarrhea dehydrates a person. Gatorade has stuff in it, special nutrients that helps restore hydration. So for me I guess that part temporarily outweighs the sugar aspect. I even used it once for my dog when he got parvo and he survived.

The thing about sugary drinks is if the diarrhea is caused by bacteria, they will feed on it and multiply. I still give it, but more diluted. Another good remedy, some use flat seven up, but really, ginger ale is good, as ginger soothes the stomach.

Devideddi, I guess you presented a good point and you have facts to back it up too. I have read several posts online and most moms presented the same argument, that rehydration should be your first concern and worry about the sugar later. GardenGerty, I think we'll opt for flat 7up next time if my sister-in-law doesn't want to spend much. I'm from the Philippines and we don't have ginger ale here. =D

I had an amoebiasis about 3 years ago where the symptoms are like severe diarrhea with fever. I was given medicines and was advised to drink Gatorade by my doctor. I don't think Gatorade is a cure but just for me not to be dehydrated and replenish all the water loss that I had.

Hi chiwasaki! I had also have experienced amoebiasis before and there were times that it's coming back especially when I'm stressed. The doctor haven't told me anything about Gatorade. What she prescribed to me are medicines to kill the bacteria and hydration solutions. It was only that one time I drank Gatorade because I want to recover fast. I hope this amoebiasis won't come back again.

If a person is dehydrated, give them water. Yes, sugary drinks are never helpful and I can't believe that people still believe that gatorade is like some power drink or something. I know a girl who is trying to lose weight and is always drinking it. She tells me that it is good for you. lol. No, it's not.

It is effective for someone who is working in the heat, or who has been exercising rigorously for a couple of hours. Usually people will recover from diarrhea unless there is some resistant micro organism. It is also good to give them chicken soup. I think the rehydrating home remedy just says to add a dash of salt and a pinch of sugar to an 8 oz. glass of water and sip it.

"It's what Michael Jordan drinks to regain his strength during games so I know it's effective." That's what my sister-in-law said. I failed to supress my giggles.

Thanks for all your suggestions GardenGerty. I'll surely take note of these. I have a 5 year old son and these information could come handy.

My mom always gave me Gatorade when I had vomiting or diarrhea as a child. I read some of the comments and am not sure why people think mineral water with sugar and salt added would be any better. Plus, if you want the child to stay hydrated you are going to have to give them something that tastes good to them so they want to drink it. No it won't cure anything. In most cases there is no "cure" for diarrhea other than supporting the body and letting it purge the bacteria or virus that caused the diarrhea in the first place. As people mentioned Pedialyte is a good option, but I am going to bet that Gatorade is less expensive and more widely available. I wouldn't worry too much about the sugar in the Gatorade either. It isn't like she is giving it to him all the time, it is only for this specific illness. Plus, the sugar will give his body some additional fuel to run on until it is safe to eat more substantial foods again. On a final note. I pretty much only got Gatorade when I was sick as a kid and I loved drinking it when I didn't feel well. If I am not sick I can not stand the stuff. Don't know if it is because it really doesn't taste that good or I just associate it with illness.

I didn't know much about gatorade. But 100 plus, yes it was recommended by our child specialist. When our son get diarrhea, like usual we go to our child specialist. He gave a lot of rehydrate salt and diarrhea pills. Then we ask him how if this is not suffiecient? Then he said we can give him 100 plus, an isotonic drink, but leave it open to remove all teh gas or CO2 inside the drink. Then we can give him and in fact it is very good for stomach upset according to him. I don't think Gatorade is different. But if we are not sure, maybe we shouldn't give it to our kids.

voracious, I feel that Gatorade have less carbonate or CO2 compares to others which make it better than others. I prefer Gatorade because I feel more rejuvenate if I had Gatorade. enigma, Me and my wife are very surprise when we heard it from our pedetrician. We have been told by our relatives before but we just didn't believe them until it was told by our pedetrician. I don't know if 100 plus availaible in other country, but if they do available they should be easily available at the grocery stores.

I'll take note of 100 plus marcmm. Specially because your pediatrician recommended it. voracious, is 100 plus available at any local grocery? I am not a fan of sports drinks so I am not familiar with this brand.

Hi everyone! I've had diarrhea several times already but I only have taken Gatorade once and I think it worked for me. I usually just take prescriptions given by the doctor it was only that one time that I have to try if drinking Gatorade will work. I was dehydrated that time and felt so weak but I have to come for an assessment to a job that I applied. I can’t think of other remedy to re-hydrate myself faster but to drink Gatorade. Fortunately, it worked. I felt regenerated and was able to come for the assessment. I hope I won't have to do it again as I have read responses here that it might not be good for us.

Yeah I have read a lot of remedies here from myLotters. I guess I didn't have much choice that time because I badly needed to rehydrate fast and that's the only thing I know. We're really learning a lot in here.

Lucky you! ;D Maybe in emergency cases like yours, I will drink Gatorade. But I won't rely too much on it. Other myLotters posted alot of remedies which we can opt for next time. =D

I think it helps, like an aid actually because gatorade does contain some thing in it that help rehydrate the body. But I would say that gatorade is not a cure. It merely helps your body recover faster, you still need to take medicines that is especially created for diarrhea.

Most of the sites I have read have contradicting opinions regarding the use of Gatorade. As you mentioned, they consider it as an "aid" to help fight dehydration. I'm still doubtful though.

I believe that a reason why people use Gatorade when they have diarrehea is because of the electrolytes that are in it. I see that you are from the Phillipines, I don't know if they have this in your country but its a drink for little kids called Peidalyte. If they have it over there, buy that because its safe and effective, its made just for rehydrating little kids, and babies. If they don't have that there, go to a pharmacy and ask if there is anything similar. I really hope your nephew feels better soon

Yes I am from the Philippines. Most of the pages I've read online gave the same reason why Gatorade can be used as an aid against dehydration. Pedialyte is available here. It is more expensive though that's why they opted for Gatorade instead. I find that a bit irritating. Why settle for something cheaper if what's at stake is your child's safety? He's feeling a little better now although he obviously lost weight. Thanks for spicysweetie21. Appreciate your help.

i've got a really sensitive stomach and i am prone to getting diarrhea a lot. my doctor says it's okay to take gatorade when i do get diarrhea, but i'm pretty sure it's not to cure the diarrhea, it's just to help the whole dehydration thing. gatorade does not cure it, it jsut helps form not getting dehydrated. i usually take some sort of medicine for the whole diarrhea thing.

Gatorade has electrolytes which can really help when someone is unable to keep food in for what ever reason. However you are correct there is a lot of sugar, but if his body is not absorbing nutrients then the electrolytes can help. I would however give him Pedia Light instead of Gatorade though since there is less sugar. Also if he has not been keeping anything in for a few days a liquid drink like Ensure will help as well, as it has vitamins and minerals that can help sustain someone with such an illness, my daughter was really sick a few years back and I thank God for those shakes because that and taking her to the hospital every night for IV fluids is what kept her alive.

I've never heard of Gatorade curing diarrhea. You should just stick to the doctor's advice. He's the expert here so we should follow his advice.

Use mineral water mixed with sugar and salt will work. This combination not gonna stop diarrhea but can avoid your nephew from dehydrated. But sorry, I forgot how much you must put sugar and salt on water.

I already see entire discussion and I believe is about how we can avoid dehydrated caused by diarrhea. Correct me if I'm wrong, why people asked to buy supplement (Gatorade for example) when you can solve it with resources you had at home and cost you less. Why I suggest sugar and salt (see discussion No. 2)? 1. As long as I concern, all food we ate will change to sugar by our body and sugar create energy for us. 2. Salt reduced/blocked multiplying bacteria (but not kill them all). Salt can be accept by our body (on the right portion of course) but bacteria can't.

for me, i always drink gatorade whenever im sick like fever, diarrhea, body malaise to avoid dehydration. it is helpful though, but the best thing your mother has to do is to bring your nephew to the hospital. so that diarrhea will be treated asap 'coz maybe gatorade won't be that helpful. get well soon to your nephew.

Yes I use gatorade for my niece if she suffers diarhhea because it contains a lot of electrolytes than a regular bottle of soda.
