Free travel? Do they still have tramp steamers? And where to find real deals?

I used to hear alot about programs that provided free trips for volunteer work, teaching and exchange programs, etc. Now that there is an internet to instantly look up such things I'm learning it is just a bunch of smoke I guess. Heck, you used to be able to jump a "tramp steamer" and hitchhike around the world in 80 odd days apparently, but now noone is going anywhere for free or even letting you work for a nice trip. Even service organizations like Red Cross want a pound of flesh and money to grease the wheels. Is there anything like a free working trip anymore? Is there anyway to get a teen some world travel without spending thousands? -The Travelling Rat

I bought a one way flight from London to Helsinki. I took an open dated Inter Rail Pass with me for my homeward journey. I worked as a children's nanny in Finland. The family had a town house, a country home and a lakeside cottage. I got a working holiday visa for Australia. It was part of my trip around the world. I worked as a children's nanny, a charity collector and a factory packer. Cabin crew fly for their career. A pilot is an excellent job to have. There do not seem to be any free working trips anymore but I do suggest a book called "Work Your Way Around the World" by Katie Wood.
