I saw this story on the internet of a Lithuanian mayor who rode on a military vehicle into the street to crush a mercedes benz car for parking illegally. Link to the story here http://news.sky.com/home/strange-news/article/16042706
I think that is much punishment for parking a car illegally and it is possible he could get sued by the owner. But it seems the whole thing is one big publicity stunt and the whole thing is staged.
Would the mayor of your city get away with driving a military vehicle on the streets and crushing a car?

Well, you are right, the whole thing was staged, said so in the article. I don't see the point why he had to run over a car just to point out that he's against illegal parking. The motive I see here why he did it is he wanted to prove that he can afford to wreck a car in public, and ride an armored vehicle. If he wanted to draw attention then he could have just used the media to do so. For Christ's sake, it's just illegal parking. Politicians shouldn't really look at themselves as celebrities, somehow it disgusts me.

Here in Davao City, the implementation of traffic rules is very firm but fair because they apply to all, INCLUDING local officials. So the people tend to follow the rules automatically because s/he knows that these will be applied to him, whether s/he is exalted in society or just an ordinary truck driver.
But there are some areas that are hard to police, and time when law enforcers cannot be around, like at night. So there are cameras installed in these places. The police don't run after the violators every time there is a breaking of the rules, unless safety and life are involved. But wait when one renews his/her vehicle franchise or driver's license. It will not be renewed unless one pays the fines for traffic violations recorded on television. Funds are raised by the city even as the citizens become more law abiding.

His Honor might have been acting as an extra (stuntman) in a movie, or kicking off his campaign for re-election, with that stunt as the centerpiece. Perhaps he also wanted to show to the world that the Lithuanians still have it. I may be wrong but I have read somewhere that there was always a unit of Lithuanian sharpshooters in the former Tsarist and successor Soviet Union armies. Maybe he was trying to show that that martial spirit still exists, very much alive and kicking... hahaha...
His Honor may have also discovered the magic combination of politics and showbiz and is just testing the waters, so to speak.

LOL although it's a publicity stunt, which I didn't know at first, I still think it's a good alternative to deter illegal parking. Perhaps some may think that it's a bit too hardcore but only by doing this, those drivers would not dare to disobey the law again and create unnecessary inconvenience for other motorists. In my country, there's a 'double yellow line' rule and when motorists park their vehicles in the yellow line, they would expect their wheels to get clamped. These lines are found in every nook and corner where there are roads, to deter illegal parking.

hello 2wicelot,
i was interested by the last part of your question, as to whether the mayor of my city could get away with this.
we don't really have a city mayor, but imagining i did, its interesting, as much of the way a story in our press is presented depends on the tabloid press. and it would depend on who was seen as the scapegoat. there are a lot of people who feel that traffic wards are too harsh on car drivers, now, whereas none of us are very fond of politicians. so i am not sure whether he could get away with it. i think it might be reported as "crazy mayor wrecks car in publicity stunt".
i might see if any of our papers have reported it, and how!

Mayor crushes the car for illegal parking i hear this from television dst the crush the mercedez car for illegal parking.this is divided in two sides that this punishmnt is fine or its bad that that much punishmnt is not ment for illegal parking by this they warning all these kinds of peiples that beware it would harmful to them
Who dont care the rules of law .its maybe good that they crush the expensive car because if they dont care of law then why do law care for these kinds of law .in favour of mayor i wanna say that they are giving them
The taste of thier own medicines..so they followand obey the rules strickly .maybe its stunt but by this people are aware that maybe it can happen wid us in future so park our car only in legal place else illegeal parking ..its good i like this i am in favour of mayor ..

If it was staged and no one's personal property was damaged without consent, he probably wouldn't have had any negative backlash. If he had actually crushed someone's car without their consent, he would have had quite a few legal issues to handle and probably would not have been reelected. Seems like a stupid way to make a point to me.

He must be a joker before he became a mayor, or a foot soldier, that is overkill using a military vehicle to run over an illegally parked car. it can be towed away in a few minutes. It has to be a publicity stunt to make a hero out of himself on his 'crime fighting' campaign.

I was glad it was just for publicity stunt. What a mayor really!
When my husband and i saw it on TV, we laughed. But have you seen that he swept the remnants of the place where a car he crushed was completely towed ? Nice.
In totality, it is still best that we give the owners of those cars an ultimatum and penalize them heavily in terms of money when they still would not follow.
