Earlier, we had an exam. Our teacher decided to close the door. There were a lot of my classmates who came late and they weren't already allowed to go inside. One of them is my friend. She stays near to our school, but she still came late. As much as I wanted to sympathize my friends, part of the much bigger fault are theirs. I think that our teacher just wanted to teach them a lesson. I'm hoping that they realized that having a Filipino time as an excused is terrible. I think that we can do something about it; only of were to determined to.

I very much agree with what the teacher did. That way, the students will know the importance of going to an exam earlier than the usual or even just on time. If you are so bent in taking the exams , you will do your best not to be late to it. Good if it is just an ordinary everyday class.

You're so right SIMPLYD. To come to school early is something that most of my classmates should do.

One of the things how we can show our interest in studying, is going to class early. It shows your enthusiasm to learn new things for the day!

We Filipinos are very patient and I think we can say we love the word "WAIT" as well. We sometimes even expect the others to be late during appointments and we have adjusted to those scenarios. However, that's a practice that we need to curb especially if you're going to work for an American company or even in any companies for that matter. If your classmates don't care about the value of punctuality, sooner or later they'll learn it when they're employed by a company with a strict attendance rule.

yallit and visavis: I agree with you guys. I think that they will have a hard time creating great impressions to their bosses, especially when it comes to matters like punctuality.

I hope in the near future such behaviour of WAIT become ON TIME or sometimes ADVANCE. As I said being such behaviour of waiting and late is reflecting in one character.

I hope so too since I'm mostly on time for my schedules. I hate waiting for others especially if they were the ones who set the appointments in the first place.

I completely understand why your teacher did that. However she should at least make an exception. She needs to understand that probably these students were late because they studied hard late at night. Also, traffic here in our country in unpredictable.

I agree with vocarious. Most of the students who were late live near the school. So traffic is not the best excuse. They can always study a week or days before the exam.

Studied at night could be a valid reason to be late in school but not the traffic because it's always traffic during morning since it's a rush hour. Best solution to avoid being late is to wake up early.

Wow... There are this Filipino time too? Initially I taught there are only this Malaysian time. How surprise am I to know that there is another country that being adapt to this sort of lateness. I hate late, and most of the time I try to make myself on time. I hate to wait and even if my household are not yet ready. Rather than discipline, I rather call it an excuse. They want to use it as excuse. And what always good about this sort of time, coming late go back early when it come to working hours. And most of it happens in the goverment sector. Sometimes I wonder why it is very difficult to be on time. Everybody have 24hrs a day and yet they can make it on time. really we need to teach our kids to be on time because it is the only way we can stop this problem. By teaching our kids, we need to set a good example ourselves and always be on time.

I didn't know that there's what you call "Malaysian time." It's funny. I never knew that Filipinos and Malaysians tend to relate when it comes to time. There are other Asian countries who are very strict when it comes to coming early. How I wish the Filipinos can adapt this kind of lifestyle.

Yeah, you're right. It is a common excuse nowadays. When ask why you're late? The answer "Well, you know. Malaysian time." Other common excuse, traffic jam. This two excuse have been able to withstand the test of time. It has been use since I was vry little kid and now I even had my own little kid and this excuse still widely use. It is time to change our mindset and try to respect the time more.

Yes the Filipino time still exist in our culture call it "maniana habbit" is always problem of every Filipino. They admit or not that the main reason behind why Filipino is very slow in progress. In my view and experienced I've learn a lot when I working abroad because being functual and on time in the office or appointment is very important. Sometimes how you treat the time is reflecting your character.

yes visavis, you got that right, the man`ana habit we got from the Spanish colonizers, actually the word means tomorrow or in other usage means later, besides being associated with being late, it is also related to procrastination or doing later what we can do today. Being late has Spanish era roots because when you arrive too early or exactly on time in a in a party, the host might not yet be ready and kinda awkward, another thing is important guests are perceived or expected to arrive last so most Filipinos and Spanish Insulares outdo each other by being late

Wow! Ive learned a lot from you guys. I never realized that Filipinos inherited that kind of mannerism from the Spaniards. I think it's more likely a domino effect. We always think that most Filipino people are incapable of coming early so, we decided to come late.

i was once like your classmates before though with a slight difference but still suffer punctuality issues.. i was always late during lecture and my teacher do the same as your teacher does, so basically i could not attend class, though i am really ahead of time during exam, but the downside to it was i always get the lowest score.. i continued to do my habit until the time i received my evaluation card which was really depressing over my part of having a grade of 78 on math since that was my first subject.. upon seeing it, i come to my senses and have change my habit, since then i have improved, my grades went up, first grading i got 78, in the second i got 85, then my teacher applauded me with my 85 grade on the second grading so i was inspired by it and then my grades eventually went up..

Hi elsmarie! So were your classmates still allowed to take a make-up exam or something? One thing I learned about meetings, appointments or something, those who live nearer will come late unlike those who live farther who usually come early. I've proven that with my co-workers and actually, that's true for me sometimes. I think people just take advantage of the short distance that's why they still tend to get late for their appointments. Cheers.

They weren't allowed. The faculty had a meeting and all of them made a pact that those students who came late aren't excused. My friend stays so near to our school and I don't know why she still comes to school late.

Yes. We all should give importance to time. Being late just shows how lax we are and how much importance we are giving to the person and to the activity that we would be attending. I do hope that we all could eradicate that "Filipino Time" culture.

One of the things that I don't particularly like is when Pinoy's would use "Filipino Time" which means they would do things only when the time is almost up. I tend do be like that too specially if I have to meet up friends :) if our meeting time is 5:00 pm I would be there at 5:30pm and I am still the first one to be at the meeting place, all would be around at past 6pm. But yours is different. we should be on time at school. I never been late because I don't want to be late and walk inside the classroom when the prof is teaching already and most of my professors have pre-test so Everyone in our class are never late. I think the cure for your classmates to be on time is -- if you have professors like mine who gives pre-test every day.
@eLsMarie (4345)

Our teacher also conducts pre-test. She usually ask us about current events. Most of our classmates still comes to school late. Our teacher's good because she still gives extensions e.g. five minutes.

This is very common, and we call it Filipino time. Better than the other famous ....n time right? We can improve ourselves,if we wanted to. But some still keep the old attitude and used to it. They will only learn their lesson once they lost an important thing or person in their life due to this behaviour. have a good day jaiho®

Unless our people can conquer this bad habit, we are doomed to lose good deals and opportunities, most people from progressive countries will not tolerate tardiness not unless they really badly need what we have to offer, otherwise they will get it somewhere else

There is not excuse to be late to an exam especially if you are near by. Ok maybe if your in the hospial or something of that nature. This happened to my class mates too when I was in college and they thought they could get away with coming in very late and maybe take the test at a later date. They just stayed up late the previous night and got drunk. Sooo those who snooze loose

Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys. Actually, if they only practice to come to school early, they'll realized that they won't be missing much. I wonder hoe they managed to come to school late and complain about lots of stuffs.

Being late is so common nowadays. Aside from having so many reasons, most of us are lack of discipline. I'm a Filipino and was once worked in a foreign country and I salute them for being obedient at all times even if no one is watching. They observe traffic rules, they don't spit and smoke in public and most of all when they dine outside like in the mall(macdo, kfc...anywhere outside) they do segregate their rubbish. They make sure that the table where they dine is clean before they leave the place. Most of us are also looking forward for a corrupt-free country, we demand our high officials to do necessary action just to have that but we never think that in day to day life we are not contributing anything even in little ones. We are also responsible for this country. Let's help each other even in our own little way.

True Jenith. Sometimes, I kinda think that I was a foreigner in my past life. Being always on time is something that I inherit from them.

Indeed diogz22. I don't see the point to why they should complain and get mad at our teacher. I think our teacher's just doing her job. Oh! well, I hope it's just an initial reaction.

I ma one of the people who don't practice Filipino time. I usually don't want to be late becuase I don't want to inconvenience others and I wanted to avoid any downsides of being late (which is many, depending on the situation). You are right in thinking that your teacher wants the whole class to learn a lesson - which is always be prepared and try to step up if there are shortcomings. For an exam date, you're not only preparing yourself for the exam by studying but you should also prepare in taking the exam. Also, your teacher might think that is is unfair for the your classmates (including you) who made effort to go to the examining area to take the exam at the right time. I hope your teacher will give a chance for the latecomers to take the exam for another time

i think that your teacher just taught them a greater lesson in life that was easy to pass but very hard to achieve for all of us. They will already learn to be very early in class especially if they have exams. I applaud your teacher in doing that to them

Ya there are a lot really who are like that. Sometimes we don't follow our own regulations. But once Filipino work and live outside Philippines they tried to obey what other countrys regulations. Hope we must start here in our country before we obey with others. That is why we don't reach to the goals we alwasy wanted and always blame it to the government. Just wish and hope we must follow our regulations and ordinance.

True igatiful_badass. That's an occurring problem that most people consider it petty. For the people who habitually arrive late, they don't realize the effect that they can contribute to the person who are always coming early. They tend to arrive late even if they knew that a lot of people are so busy and they don't want to waste time.
