A friend in my FB account just shared that all of our contact numbers supplied in our FB account are all published! See it for yourself, click on Account, Edit Friends, at the upper left side of the page, click on Contacts and you'll see that all of your friends' numbers are displayed under their names! .

OMG! Yeah it's true....it's all there!!! I don't think it was posted on their personal info...I think FB extracted it from the PM's we are sending to our friends. Just last week of July, college best friend sent me a PM, notifying me her new celphone number, and it is there now....so we have no privacy with FB even messages sent privately. This is very good info and topic you posted, now we are all aware, better to communicate through email if we are sharing our contact numbers. Thanks!

I'm not sure about extracting cellphone numbers from private messages, but it can be a possibility. If that's true then that's downright invasion of privacy!

It is noted on there that you can take off your number. It says:
Facebook Phonebook displays contacts you have imported from your phone, as well as your Facebook friends.
If you would like to remove your mobile contacts from Facebook, you need to disable the feature on your mobile phone and visit this page.
So it doesn't have to be on FB for all to see.

I'm not sure of that because I don't use Facebook Mobile.

I wouldn't think it would have access to something you didn't put on there. I don't have a cell phone. I would not like that at all. Might be time to think of other sites besides Facebook if they found mine.

Oh great. Now this is making me really mad! Why can't they just monitor their system? I'm now wondering if those spam messages sent to me in the past were because of this reason? From this, I have every reason to believe that my number was leaked for some idiot to send spam message to me! But I guess those numbers are only shown because they chose to show it to everyone that's why it appeared.

Hi dfollin, actually to start off with, I filtered off my number to just myself, so my number won't be visible

If you have given information about your contact number in your FB profile then they will reflect your contact number with your profile. So it is not an important issue. Because there are many person who wants to show their contact number in their profile. But sometimes it is bad when your contact number takes someone and then tries to use it as illegal.

Unless their settings is that they are only the ones who can view their numbers and not other people.

That will attract a lot of those online predators to target on those girls. That is the fact our privacy will be invaded in those social network sites. So, watch out. I knew a lot of people love facebook and myspace. But, be careful about your information will be leaking to people who has malicious intention.

When I signed up for Facebook, I didn't put in an address or a phone number, so, I guess I'm totally safe.

This is why I have never included any personal information about me. I don't even use my real name on there. I like to stay as private as I can online. I never post a picture. I don't post my dob, where I live or even the schools I went to. The less that's online about me the better.

But you do have a Facebook account? How do your friends know it's you?

This ran around while back. And I looked and yeah... mine wasn't there as I never posted it in my profile, but others (friends) were there. I just don't get why people do that. If someone wants to talk to you, they can post and ask for your number. Why give it to everyone...in the world!!!! I just am amazed that so many people put so much personal stuff on facebook. Have they not watched the news, read a newpapers or just chatted with friends about recent topics in the news? What part of "identity fraud" don't they get!?!?!??!

i checked at my page, some numbers showed but just a few. luckily my wife's contact numbers are not there. just like you said it all depends on the setting. i myself and of course my wife dont put any exact info. schools and thing we like are okay but some too personal like address and phone numbers are too personal already to share it to the world. so i agree on what you said... check your page and change settings. thanks for putting this post... it helps a lot.

Hi, secretbear
I have seen that too in facebook.
I am very protective of my contact numbers and address. That is why I do not post them. If there is a site where a correct contact number and address is necessary, I just give my office address and office number.

Hi secretbear! I also noticed that in there is a list of phone numbers there. I'm not sure if Facebook send a notification to all users if they want to post their numbers or not. I don't have my phone number in my account since I they can just send a message on my facebook account instead.

FB sure didn't tell its users about it. I didn't receive any notification nor email. It was fortunate that the number I put there was an old number which I don't use anymore.

Or simply you can put fake contact number there to prevent trolls in getting your contact.

Sorry, I tried it but didn't see the "edit friend' option. I think it is not the fault of FB administrator to publish their contact details. They should have not posted their number in the first place if they don't want to be shown in public. I guess, the one that is being shown is those FB that was set for public viewing. As you said, they have the option to make it private.

I went to that list and I knew that it could not be everyone because the list was of a less amount then my friends list.I randomly checked some people on the list that had phone numbers on there and they also had their phone number on their profile page in the information area.
Then there are two people that I know do not have their phone numbers on their profiles and I double checked, just to be sure they hadn't changed their minds and added them and I didn't know it.But,they hadn't still no phone number on their profiles.
I then tried to find them on that list and they were not there.I think you better double check the people that you think you know don't have their number on.

Thanks for publishing this info here. At least you had let others know and save them from unwanted things happening to them. I just checked out and discovered a few of my friends had also put their contact numbers in facebook. Now, i had informed them to delete off their contact numbers for their own safety. It is better to be careful when using facebook and always remember to check your settings.

A lot of my friends still have their contact numbers displayed. I wonder how this is. I have a friend whose number does not show in his profile but when I do the steps above, I can see his number in the list.

Oh, I think I made a mistake. I've checked a few of my friends whose numbers were displayed in the Contact list and all of them had shared their numbers in their profiles. So I guess, FB only displayed those who shared this info in their profiles.

Yes, I can see that..huhu...my friends contacts are there..I think most of them know that their phone numbers can be viewed by others since they are all IT literacy..I can't imagine if they did not noticed it- they should get back to school and seat for an exams once again.(^^) I don't think we should give the real phone numbers unless if we are running business using facebook. Then it is necessary to put a contact numbers for the customer convenience.(^^)

I think it's okay to share contact numbers as long as your privacy settings are tight. Which means, you select which people can see it.

What i think personally is it's not a big deal for guys. But ya gals should be aware now and delete their numbers from Facebook right now to be in a safer side. If we talk about guys then they themselves are always ready to give their numbers then what's the problem if Facebook published it. (Exceptions are there)
