Dravid's inclusion in the ODI squad, a step backwards?

Today, Rahul Dravid, the former India skipper and architect of several Indian Test Match victories has been named again in the squad for the ODI's by the national selectors. Interestingly he is the same person who had been dropped by the selector's saying that they are building a team for the future. To Dravid's credit he has been the only batsman who seemed to be coping with the seeming English conditions. So if form is considered, he is an automatic inclusion. However, have the selectors taken a step backward considering that he may not have many years of cricket left in him, especially one-dayers?

I am a big fan of dravid.i also like the way of his batting.just settle down and score and in english condition,he is one of the best for indian team.our youngsters are capable but they are not experienced and selectors don't want to take a chance for odi series.i like the selection this time.rohit sahrma, virat kohli and parthiv patel included in team.this is good balance team.irfan pathan should be given chance ahead of vinay kumar based on condition in england.he can swing a bowl as wasim akram said many times during first 2 tests and i agree with him.i have seen him personally in baroda where i have played for u-15,17 and 19 baroda cricket team.he is awesome bowler and with help of akram,he can regain his speed and get momentum and be in team on regular base.

yes you are right.but for this,we can try 1 or 2 youngsters at a time not whole team and include them in 15 member squad so that they can learn from seniors.they can't be selected on the basis of ipl or shorter version of game to play in test cricket.we have pretty good and young team for odi.we just have to try young players in test matches and also outside india.that is big issue.

I also believe that Dravid is one of the best players in the world. I also understand that our young players are not that experienced. But when will they gain experience if we keep on playing our old players? Our team will eventually become like the Australian team of the past, when many players retire and suddenly there are too many shoes to fill.

Selectors have gon crazy they seems to be little bit confuse on whom to select and whom not.
I love selection of dravid as he is my fav star cricket and usualy write blog on him as well. But to reality now dravid is no in parallel to the presen day ODI. Probably it is the 2 century what dravid had made cause his inclusion in the odi team and i think he may be drooped for rest of the game to be played in up comimg years.
It also a little suprise to me that dravid is in ODI team. I wish him a very best of luck.

I think Dravid was given the chance many be because this series can be his farewell series after which he may take retirement from ODIs.I can think of any other reason for selecting Dravid. It cant be that India is not prepared for short balls and hence they kept Dravid in the team,he alone cant play 50 overs can he? so its likely to be a farewell series ,i don't think its because of English conditions, if that was the case why didn't Dravid play in ODIs at SA just before world cup.

I don't think so. It is actually a right decision by selectors after many years. As you agree he is the only person in the present squad who can face the English attack confidently. how do you expect selectors ignore him in such a circumstances? It would have been a blunder on their part had they not acted that way. Secondly this is not the right time for building the team for future. This is the face saving time for India. the way Indians are batting a the moment, we can not expect much in O.D.I. series either. So let us all welcome Rahul's inclusion as step forward and not backwards.

Hi amit
I am not agree with you. Drived proved best batsman on this England tour. Where all batsman are struggling for making runs along with master blaster schin tendulkar on other hand drived make 2 ton.2nd thing Youvraj sing injury make a place for him.

The selectors seem to think that no other batsman will be able to face the hostile bowling of England like Dravid. Since there is no way we can win test series as we have already lost two tests, it becomes imperative we should try and do better in the one day matches. Step backwards or forwards is not the question. Selectors have to pick a squad that can do some justice against the England bowling and the environment. We have seen almost all the batsmen, veterans as well as newbies, unable to show good form as Dravid did. Therefore it is an obvious choice that Dravid is back in ODI squad.

Dravid is no doubt a great player. Again based on today's form he is probably the best choice. But his inclusion means that if one player (in this case Yuvraj Singh) is unfit, India does not have the reserve strength to field the youth. Then what was the use of the Windies tour in which India fielded the reserve team? Did they not find a single player good enough. Again Dravid is one of the best. However this move seems to be more like what Pakistan did in the world cuo they won when they recalled an Imran Khan out of retirement. When a country has to depend on a single player .....
