To get a second job or not to?

I want to pay off my debt sooner rather than later. I currently work about 30 hours a week in retail. It pays my bills, puts money in my savings and gives me some left over but it's not a lot of money. I don't know if I should get a second job. My place of work doesn't give references, but I've been there 3 years, so I don't think any of my previous places of employment will give me any. I also have a bad back, so standing for long periods of time puts me in agony, let alone if I was working another job on top of my current one. If I don't get a second job are there any other ways I can earn decent money?

From your situation, i think the best solution is getting a part-time job, to earn you a second income. You can try getting an online job, if you have expertise in completing task of your choice. But the earning is very low if you don't have enough experience to handle online job. Better get an offline part-time job, where you can slot in your time to work a few hours a day. Hopefully by that way, you are able to pay off your debt and be a free person soon. Good luck to you...

Thanks for the well wishes! I think I will need them! I guess my back could handle getting a job that is only about 12 hours a week. That's three 4 hour shifts. That wouldn't be too bad. An online job would be lovely, but I have no idea where to apply.

Why not to begin your online job journey, you can try apply and bid for jobs at Freelancer or Odesk. As for other mini earning sites, you can visit my blog in my profile. Hope you will begin your earning journey soon. Try your best to earn from them...Hope to hear good news from you...

all depend on your need, if you feel you need a second job then go for it. let me tell you friend that your work place has the obligation to give references if you request it, if they don't want there is law for that, i know cause I'm a manager myself. bad back is not all, it depends on your resume, how it is, your experiences and how you write it. I hope you find a job soon.

According to where I work they will not give professional references. If you want a reference it will have to be from a coworker as a personal reference. I don't seem to excel at interviews or resume writing. I also panic my first month at a job because I don't know anything. It is super stressful for me

Is there any way you can get a job as a receptionist, or a call centre telephone person, that sort of thing? That way you don't have to be on your feet all day. I have been looking for ways to earn extra money, because I have to work from home now. I am doing a mixture of online things plus having students come to my house. I think I am going to try to sell crafts on etsy and maybe kids clothes on eBay.

my husband works full time, i work part time (due to health issues) plus we have 3 other jobs that we split between us. Hubby does accounting for a guy's business (i do the keying in); we take out garbage at a dentist's office plus we do parking monitering at a number of condos (to see who is there and if they are parked illegally). if you can fit another job into your schedule, why not?

Well, from what you have said, I don't think that it could really hurt to get a part-time job, which will help you with a second income. Sure, it might be a lot to manage at first, but if it's something that could help you, then it might not be such a bad idea.

I have an etsy store, I just finished a 2 year art program at college. But it's so hard to sell anything! I would love for that to be my second income, but alas, sales need to pick up soon or else I'll have to leave it and get another job.

I have a couple of jobs, 3 to be exact. People wonder how in the world I do it. But all of my jobs tie together time wise really nice. I am now going to be able to start saving for a down payment on a new - used car and/or a house, although the house prospect will not be for another 1 - 2 years. I like the flexibility of my part-time jobs and am still able to have a social life. I think it is easier for me since I am not married and do not have any children right now. I do like to have 'me' time as well to keep my sanity, but sometimes when I am at home doing a whole lot of nothing, I feel like I should be doing something or going somewhere. My Mom has 2 jobs and has for many years and before my Dad retired, he had 2 jobs. He is retired now, but still has a part-time job to keep him busy. Although it takes a little time to get used to having more than one job, it is definitely do-able.

I think a second job will do you a lot of good. I have worked two jobs really often. The key is to look for a second job that requires different things of you than the first one. If your main job has you work sitting a lot, get a second job that encourages you to walk around and be active. Do limit the second job, and if possible, since it is to pay off debt, keep running totals so that you know that it is helping you meet your goals. Retail sounds pretty active, so maybe you need to find a part time desk job of some kind that you can do sitting down. I admire you for being determined to pay off your debt.
