I love to learn how to make cakes with fondant icing. At least for my children's birthday. I found fondant icing cake was really expensive and it can cause my wallet if I want to buy them. I love to learn how to make them. Does anyone know how to begin? What should I get?

Don't let the word fondant scare you. It is really easier than most people think. And cheap! I made my first ever fondant cake a month ago for my daughter's 5th birthday. It turned out amazing. You may have heard of marshmallow fondant. It's super easy to make and surprisingly cheap. Try to search online for some videos on how to make one. Good luck!

Fondant cakes are very appealing to the eyes but they are not as flavorful compared to different icings. I haven't really tried making fondant but I make gum paste for the flowers and other decorations for my cakes. There are many recipes on the net but for a beginner, I suggest you tube so you can see how their recipe turn out.
You can check my gum paste recipe here and my other cakes here:

I have attended last 8 years ago on how to make a fondant icing but after that I haven't tried making it at home. I also would like to make fondant icing because it is so nice to look at the finish products. But i already forgot the ingredients and the procedure on how to make the fondant icing. I've tasted cakes with fondant icing its not as good as boiled icing cakes. But if there's a seminar again on how to make fondant icing I guess I will attend and will try to make it home this time.

Fondant is like a bad romance. It seems beautiful to the eye, but the taste I'll pass on it. Give me Royal icing. What I use is Pastillage it dries faster than fondant and tastes better and contains ingredients that you can easily obtain.
Here is the recipe it is close to fondant
1pk unflavored gelatin.
1/2 cup water or liquid glucose
1tsp cream of tar-tar
5 cups powdered sugar
1 cup cornstarch
lemon juice or citric acid.
Sift sugar & cornstarch.
combine water& crea.m of tar-tar.
Sprinkle gelatin and dissolve into a little boiling water.
Add dry ingredient and mix well.
Form into shape quickly it dries fast
Tip
For me when I'm in a hurry I use less liquid.
