how do resize video to a smaller size of mb's

do any off u know how to re-size a video to a smaller size of megabyte?
i have recorder video's of min. 1 gb and i want to make them smaller like 350 mb or so
do anybody know witch programm and what settings to get thise result

the dvdx or avi file, or whatever that is i think has been used especially for movies is a lot higher in terms of its bytes. you could convert that file into another file to make it smaller. but i'm not that quiet sure how much it'll make smaller.
try converting it into an mp4 file. i guess it'll make the file shorter as more than half of its original size.
btw, i'm using xilisoft as my converter.
