Do you think kids nowadays are too young for cellphones? What age is good?

It seems like nowadays EVERYONE, well rather, EVERY kid has a cell phone. Not ONLY do they have cell phones, but they have texting, picture messaging, and unlimited everything. In elementary school! I used to go to dance classes, with a lot of younger kids, and they were discussing how every kid in class has texting, and sends pictures of tests and cheats in class, and gossips. and they're SO uninnocent! D: it honestly disgusts me. I got my cell phone when I was in 7th grade. And even then, I had an ugly flip phone that only called. And I only got text messaging after YEARS of pleading last year. So, I think this is ridiculous. I think they should get a cell phone until like middle school. And with unlimited features, or else it spoils them and promotes bad habits.
but, dont mind just my opinion, what do you think?

I think having a cellphone in elementary school is too young.I'm sure the parents are just worried that something might happen to their kids but still too young to have a cellphone.I think the right age to have a cellphone is when they start going to middle school because they are more responsible and that's when they start to have friends and start hanging out outside of school. But their cellphones should only have limited features. They don't need those unlimited stuff.

mhm. :) exactly how I feel. I feel like getting that extra stuff is like a priviledge. They should be happy enough to get a phone in the first place. But, I think in general kids nowadays are spoiled. I already fear for the future, no one's gonna be playing outside anymore. They already don't :(

I agree. My little brother (through a series of events) was given one of those Verizon pay as you go phones from Wal-Mart and he's 5. He knows how to make calls, but nothing else. My little cousin has one of those play phones that feel fake and plastic in your hands, and hes 11. Kid's these days shouldn't have cellphones this young. And if they are given phones as a means to communicate with their parent when they're way, it should be a phone with limits on it. No unlimited texting, no unlimited calls, no picture messaging because that's how kids get in trouble. Messaging pictures of their bodies to one another and pictures of tests and quizzes and such. Not to make a point of you having an ugly flip phone, but that's the phone kids should have. An egg shaped phone that flips and calls who it needs to call. Or maybe one of those old Nokia phones you got from Dollar General stores, hahaha!

Honestly, I had an old samsung thick flip phone :P And although my keyboard phone I have now is great and I love it, the flip phone definitely had its advantages. Out of all the phones I've had, I could drop it so many times and nothing would happen. Can't do that with phones nowadays. I think that is the best kind for kids, like you said :)

I think it depends on the kids and the family situation. Over all though I think kids should be at least 13. That is when they start to get a little more independent and it is important to have a phone, mainly so that their parents can get a hold of them. I feel better now that my 15 year old daughter has a phone. I know I can always reach her if she is not at home. I want to get my 14 year old son a phone because he is very sociable, but unfortunately we can't afford it right now because my husband is not working right now. I think kids 12 and under are usually picked up after activities and stuff, and don't go out as much without being driven, unless their parents are not that concern. If a kid is out and about I think they should have a cell phone.

Actually... Here in Finland (Nokia, anyone?), almost EVERYONE has a cellphone; from young to old, from poor to rich. Even I got a cellphone at the age of 5 (it didn't have a "sim-card" in it, though, so I couldn't actually call with it), which made me feel so important (I can't stop laughing remembering/imagining how I must have been. I was 5 after all).
Now that you brought it up, I got my first "3g-telephone" just yesterday, with UNLIMITED internet (means that I can use the internet with it with no additional fees). party time
Anyway... Cellphones don't really have any threat/risks even for younger kids (except if some stranger calls it. ...but where would he/she get the number?), so I don't really see why they should not get cellphones even at their young ages. Here in Finland where kids, as soon as at the age of 7, are so independent that they can go straight after school to some friends and play, and if they do that, they can call their parents about it.
Hmmm... Giving them unlimited features and spoiling them aren't really the same thing, you know (except you CAN spoil a kid with anything actually), so once again, I see no reason not to do it if it's financially wise.

Technology is very vast these days. When I walked near the schools I always saw a lot of elementary kids especially in private schools carrying a high end kind of cellphone without them knowing that there's a danger awaits them. I suggest to some parents that don't let your kids to have cellphone because there's an appropriate age for them to have a cellphone.

Well, nowadays there are cellphones that are really cheap and they have an option on very cheap plans, so I think it is ok as long as they will not hinder their studies. I have a 6 yo son who has his own cellphone since last year! I got the phone free from my subscription plan, and I don't really need it so I just gave it to him. He just uses it to call us and other relatives.

Time is really flying that fast. Who could have thought that once precious cellphones can now be used by even elementary kids? Though the technology is constantly evolving, it is the parents' duty to train their children. They should teach them with proper approach. I disagree with too young kids to have cellphones. hey might just learn how to abuse it on an early age. I got mine when I was in high school and that was a big one with a hassle antenna. Late high school is a good time for them to experience using cellphones (and I mean those basic cellphones).

Having cellphone at early age especially kids are still too young. .It can cause bad influence on them especially if their cellphone is having good features. .I think n the best age to have cellphone is in their junior high school because you can monitor them. .

Hello there! well for me, as long as the kid knows how to use a cellphone and he is responsible enough to use the gadget then why not let that kid to have one. cellphone is very important that each of us should have even kids because it is one way of communicating with their parents.
As ling as parents explain to their kids the responsibilities of having cell phones then it it okay for them to have that so that whatever happened to them whenever they are outside their house they can immediately connect with their parents.
