Well, there goes an hour of my life that I will never get back! I just completed the Australian government Census for another 5 years. This time I did it online for the first time which was OK, except the online form did not remember addresses, so I had to type the previous address in each time. What a pain! So Aussies. Did you remember to do it? Did you do it online or by filling in the paper form? What about everyone from other countries. Do you have to complete a Census form every 5 years like we do?

Bill, mate - I stuck with the old paper form this time around! Nailed it in ten minutes flat! If they want it, they can come & get it. Why should I be bothered? I'm not giving up my valuable online earning time just to fill in our government & businesses, etc on where I'm at these days! My only expenditure on their form is the ink in my pen (which isn't even mine!). I made a great raw salad that I ate while doing it & even shared some of it with the collector (yes, I spilled a bit!). I thought I'd buck the trend with this one for you to liven things up a bit here!

Ten minutes! You had half the work to do that I did. Having kids draws it out a bit longer. Had to keep leaving the room to ask others permission for things as well. I was going to do the paper form, but I thought that the online one would be quicker. Might have made a mistake there! Anyway, I had a great time listening to music on Youtube and in my music folders, so that was alright. Probably would have only taken 30 minutes maybe if I did not have to keep choosing songs!

Yes I know! There must be plenty of people who the system does not even know exist. Even here in Australia with only 21 million, there would be people who are not registered for anything and that the system has no record of. Out in the desert areas, there are probably people like that.

Only every ten years! That is a long time in between. I don't know how they could plan effectively for the future and keep track of everybody only doing it every ten years, but I guess it must work for them.

It is an arduous work for us to do it,because we are a country with a vast territory and have more than 1.3 billion population.

I did mine online Sunday night. I did find it a lot easier than doing it on paper. And I did not had the problem of it not remembering my address. All I had to do was to tick the box (same as page one).

Sunday! Got in early. I thought that we had to do it online tonight, but I guess if you know where everyone will be and are not expecting any surprise house guests, then that is OK. It remembered my new address, but not my old one. I had to type that in for each person.

The census is meant to be kept private. It would be a breach of privacy if it used your details from 5 years ago. They only use your name for the purpose of collecting the census, just like they do to make sure you did vote. But the census is about collecting information, so that they can produce statistics out of it. Your information is not associated with your name when it is processed.

Yes, I know that it is all kept very private. I did not mean that they would keep my details from the previous Census. Just that when I typed it it for myself, I thought it might remember all the details for the other family members as well. But it did not. Just strange that they set the system up to remember the current address for each person, but not the previous one.

I finished the census online earlier...I also completed it online which is a bonus because it means I won't have a collector knocking on my door wanting the completed form....I was lucky & the form only took me about 10 mins to complete as it remembered the address which was great. I hate doing the census! Last time we had one, I had just found out I was pregnant with my daughter.

Yeah, the collector that gave me my forms said that if I did it online, there was no need for him to come back as he would be notified of the receipt number. i too had to type in my previous address but it was only for 3 people not 4.

Cool. Well, I will hang onto the forms just in case, then they will end up in my shredder!

I had no problems with it remembering our new address, but had to put our old address in for each person. At least the last time we did it, we had not moved since the last one, so it was easier then. So the collectors don't come back at all? I took down the receipt number and it said that someone might drop in and check that later! Our collector actually gave us two forms with two separate numbers, so hopefully I did the right one.

Oh yes, loads of fun! It was not too bad and not as long as I thought it was going to take. I probably could have done it a lot quicker, but I was playing songs on Youtube at the same time to make a tedious job more interesting.

Funny story about the cencus or the completion of the cencus at my house. If you were still living with your parents wouldn't it be expected that they would fill the cencus form. WRONG!!! Well my parents didnt really want to fill it but with other types of paperwork I thought that they would do it eventually, so i waited to the last day. I had uni that day so before leaving the house, I asked them to, "remember to fill the cencus form", and I left for uni. Well the uni day was over and I left for home. When I arived home which was about 8-ish, the close to-first thing I asked was did you fill in the cencus form. My whole family said to me very blatently while watching t.v that, "you dont have to fill in the form, its not compulsory". I thought to myself oh well and started heading towards my room. And all of a sudden I hear a my parents panicking. I ran towards them wondering why they became so panicky all of a sudden. Then I saw something on the t.v saying that you will be fine a minimum of $150 if your form is not filled out. And I dont think anyone wants to be fined. Everyone was screaming at each other, "WHERES THE FORM WHERES THE FORM". I told them dont worry we can do it online and then everyone calmed down. I turned on the computer and realised that my data limit was reached and nothing was opening properly. Instinctively everybody started panicking again, tearing down the house looking for the form, myself included, still tired from a 10 hr day at uni (adrenaline?). It took us around 40 mins to find it and then even after all that they were still unwilling to fill out he form and made me do it. So that was my cencus night.

What a great story. Sounds like it was quite an eventful night at your house! I actually ended up with two forms at my house! I did not actually think that it was compulsory in that you would get a fine! I suppose it is like voting. If you are enrolled to vote and do not, then they will fine you. Maybe those who are not enrolled might get away with not completing the Census? Welcome to MyLot too by the way. I hope that you will enjoy it here.
