If a person called a store's manager to say they appreciate how clean the store was, and how nice the employees were, and then named one employee in particular, do you think the manager would go tell that employee someone called to brag on how well they do their job? Have you worked in a drug store, supermarket, or other place and had the manager tell you someone called to say how great you did your job? Do you think it does any good?

Yes, I think it does good. It also helps if you put it in writing. Then they have something to share with the employee and with other employees to inspire them to do better. We once left a comment card about our experience at a restaurant and with our server. The next time we went in was a different time of day, but the host/greeter figured out who we were and said that we really deserved special treatment for taking the time to comment and complement. Good reports are really rare. We tend to report the negative about ten times more than we report the positive, and those positives really stand out.

I'd like to think they told her someone called to brag on her. It was last week, and I thought of her today and really hoped she knew about the call. She is such a nice lady and was having a really bad day when I came in.

Well, I hope they did too. I know that when I have been in the area there, that I have met some of the most pleasant store employees.

hi ambiepam we had a star worker program at the library where I worked and once every month there would b e a drawing from all thstaff and head manager too and the worker with the most votes was our star worker for that month and it was posted on a buletein board in the main hall where all could see it. I won that award 27 times in the twenty three years I wor ked there and after awhile it got really embarrassing so then we had three top workers, then they let the patrons vote and we had five people named each mothe so it was more fu n then. I was one of the five about ten times which pleased me tool.its a great incentive for all thw staff to do better at their jobs.we serve the public too in a library and let me tell ou its not alway a bed of roses either.

The hat rocks! I hope she don't spill the beans. Congrats Hat that is good record either way. The award seems to be so much more appreciated when given by the public than fellow workers. However, fellow worker support is appreciated also.

A good manager would go and tell the employee. That is what they should do because that person deserves to be told.

You should have heard that manager, steph. He clearly expected to hear a complaint. He was like shocked that someone had called to say something good.

I agree with everyone else, a manager is a good manager if he or she praises the employee. I also think the idea of getting it writing is a great idea, because if it was me, I'd scrap book it and would know where this letter is in case I decide to change jobs..This is similar to me keeping my letters from my college saying I am on the Dean's List, because I can use that info on my resume.. Another thought is about my daughter's recent appraisal. Though my daughter's boss wasn't exactly praising her when she told her about the customer wanting only my daughter to groom her dog, but then her boss asked her how she felt. I think that was her bosses way of wanting to hear my daughter's input on this good news..

I worked in a bank for many years and it did depend which branch or department I was at. The last branch I worked in had a fantastic manager who always let the staff know how well they were doing and any praise from customers was always acknowledged. Having said that I’ve also had bosses who only pointed out mistakes and never positives. I do send emails complimenting good service whenever I can and I always try to find out good staff members’ names. I think it is a good thing to do in the hope that the person’s supervisor acknowledges the efforts.

A good supervisor will always find something good to say about the employee if they look hard enough. And they will always let all know of customer good comments.

While i was working i was praised for working well and criticised when i wasn't up to the mark.If some customer singles out an employee and praises him and if that in turn is conveyed to the employee by the manager,i think it will enthuse and improve the morale of the worker. No,I haven't worked in the places you are mentioning and hence am not aware of the situation there.I have worked in an office and saw employees being praised or criticised for their output.I think it is good for an employee if he is praised for working well.Only he shouldn't allow it to go to his head.

The only problem is that the manager might think that the person ask someone to call on their behalf to make them look good.

I thought of that, but the employee I bragged on has worked there for nine years. I imagine after working there that long they know she wouldn't do that.

All I can say is if it's a "good manager" then he will tell the employee and possibly the rest of the employees that the comment was made. Just like anything else, some managers are not good managers at all and some are. I think it basically depends on what type of job it is. If he's happy with his job, this will be done, but in todays world, it seems most of them don't care in the least. I usually tell the person themselves what a great job they did and thank them numerous times, and how appreciated their help was. Then I see if the manager is available, and talk with him about it. But I do make a big effort to tell that employee she was super! It does boost their ego. I think it was awesome of you to do and it sounds as if that manager will make a remark to her, and hopefully praise her for her efforts. Lets hope so.

The day I came in she was really down. I've seen her in that store for like five years. I told her, give me a name. She's like, what? I said whoever upset you give me their name and I'll take care of it. She laughed. There was a lady eight years ago in a different store who was the sweetest lady ever. I called her store to brag on her. She reminded me of my grandmother.

I think it would be great if more consumers appreciated employees' efforts when they do a good job and verbalized it. I think that in and of itself is so rare that if a manager received good news like this of an employee, I would think that they would pass that along to the employee. Even if no specific details were given, at least the manager really should pass along the positive feedback to the employee. Employees really do need to know they're doing a good job! I always work better when I'm critiqued on what I need to change and congratulated when I do a good job, but even if I don't receive either/or, I always try to do my best! I've never worked somewhere that a customer passed along a message to me through my manager, but I also work in an office where I don't always work directly with customers. I think all good managers should be open and communicate with their employees as to what is expected of them as well as when they do a good job. Most employees work a lot better that way.

I remember one grocery store I worked at that had an award for employees who got good reviews from customers. I don't know anyone who actually got the reward, but I think it did encourage people to treat the customers well. I tended to become friendly with customers and some would come into my lane even if there were other lanes with shorter lines. Although I often had customers complement me, management seldom did.

As you know I work in a fast food type restaurant. We hardly ever hear anything good about the employees. I receive a lot of customer complaints about my co-workers. A lot of people will come in and say "Oh, you do that so much better than that other girl.. she was so rude and didn't make the sandwich right" or something like that. Then I try to figure out who they're talking about so I can let the manager know that the customer thought they were rude or whatever. I personally have never heard of a customer complaining about me, but I've also never really recieved any compliments aside from once or twice a customer will just tell me straight to my face that I'm better than a previous bad experience they had. I think if you do get a compliment, the manager should tell you. It makes you feel a little better about yourself, gives you some pride, and helps motivate you to keep delivering excellent customer service.

And I would hope that maybe when a promotion comes around, the manager would remember that the person was praised by a customer and get that promotion. That's why I wanted to tell the manager, not just her. I think it's important for the bosses of places to know who does well.

I have done that before, but in speaking with the employee at a later time, I've found that most kudos are not passed on. I doubt that this is intentional, it's just that in the normal (and busy) course of business it's simply forgotten. What I do now is sent emails to corporate offices, complimenting stores, managers and/or employees. Those are received and passed on. Plus, because it becomes part of that employees records, I hope it is taken into consideration at raise and bonus times. Ninty percent of the time I've gotten nice responses to these emails, and sometimes even coupons showing appreciation for taking the time.

Oh yes Ambie, I think it does a lot of good. This boosts the employees moral and confidence to continue striving for good customer service. I have worked in an office where patients have sent emails about certain great employees. I would print the email and hang it in the employee lunch room so that all could see how valued the spoken about employees were.

I once had someone call my boss to complain about me. I couldn't fathom why. My boss couldn't either. And it bothered me. I went over and over in my mind what could I have possible said that would upset her? I wondered if she had mixed my name up with the person she was mad at. I still don't know what I did to upset her, but it definitely upset me.

Hi AmbiePam.. In my experience, If anyone has ever complimented the way I have carried out my Job and has informed this to the Manager.. I have been praised for my good work and encouraged to continue doing so.. It definitely makes you feel appreciated and that your hard work is not going un noticed.. I have worked in a restaurant and a shoe shop (*in relation to your post*) and both places have complimented at some point or the other that I put in 100%..or I am doing a great job! You only get as much as you put in.. I say LoL.. (",)

I think working in a restaurant has to be one of the hardest jobs. You work like a dog, and you can easily be around a lot of complaining customers - customers who may not even tip.

I have done that too....I was in a fast food place where the gentleman who waited on us was super duper! I email the company....I haven't ever work in a supermarket etc.....I do know that once in a while the message is passed on. Someone recently told me about a granddaughter that got a compliment like that and they did let her know!

At my work we actually had a contest with 8 other stores to see who could get the mos customers to call in and say their name in a positive comment. The top 5 people won $100 Visa gift cards. I think that most good managers would make a point to let an employee know that they had a customer give them a compliment. I have had a customer tell my boss directly what a nice person I am and what a good job I am doing.

When I was a supervisor in a restaurant, if we received a compliment, I would let the staff know. I think that people are too busy trying to find something wrong and complaining, but they do not like to compliment when something is right. I want to believe that managers tell their employees when they do something that a customer appreciates. We also had secret shopper's and if whoever was secret shopped got 100%, we would receive a cash reward. I think it is a good idea to call or write to the manager every once in awhile when you receive good customer service because it is not too often that they receive verbal compliments. Plus, it will make you feel good and it will most likely make the employees day.
