Why do sports fans sometimes riot if their team loses?

I know the majority of sports fans can thankfully take a loss with maybe just a raise in their vocal tone, however for some it is not enough. Not in not ago in Vancouver there was a riot after a soccer game. I have also heard of such instances in a the UK. It seems that for some, seeing their favorite team lose is to much. So they express their displeasure in the form of a violent riot. Sometimes people die in these riots. My question to you is, what do you think it is about a mere game that drives people this extreme? What is that some must get violent before they can calm down?

Yes i too agree with you, But according to me sports fans get more disappointed when their teams get lost against another team particularly when it is a rivalry match. The reason for this because the change caused in the psychic actions and also due to hormones. They will be also become anger because that their money lost in case they made a bet for the team of their favorite. So, i suggest that wins and looses are common in case of the nature. So, just try to be calm because their team can win in their next match.

Fans must also understand when they are doing riots that they are destroying their own properties which will be again laid on their heads as taxes.

I suppose all kinds of things can cause the fan a losing team to lose it to. :)

I have no idea. I put it down to the act that most of them are guys and guys are passionate about sports. I think it is because sports have taken the place of wars and battles. It is like going to battle against the other team. Not being a guy I cannot understand it myself. I do think that there is more then the game going on and that the rioters are against the area where the other team came from, and there are also rioters that are against the area of the home team. So that brings up a fright. For instance, a team comes from Jersey to Manchester. The people of Jersey hate the Manchesters. So it is not just the team they are against, it is where they came from. Sorry but I do not know much about English soccer. And I probably have the teams and names of the towns wrong, but you get the idea.

That is a great explanation. I think the best one I have read yet. I suppose there is more to the game than kicking the ball around. As you mentioned, it can reach out to a location based hate.

I figured out that was the best explanation. I wold also think because many of the spectators are hooligans and criminals on their day off, but that would be insulting the decent people who are watching the game so will not go there.

Hi Awinds! I think some fans get carried away when their favorite team loses any match. When they see that their team is losing, they express their anger and indulge in rioting and in the process their pent up emotions, which were bottled up due to other reasons, also come out. It is not a civilized or say saner behavior by the fans, it hurts to fans indulging in rioting and damaging the stadium property.

I agree there - however getting through the passion of the moment that comes at the time of a riot might be a bit difficult. (Once again it looks like the system has made things difficult - I just send a reply now explaining all.)

So in a way those fans are not helping their idol sport. To damage the stadium is kind of like biting one's own hand...

That one in Vancouver just plain disgusted me. But i've seen it in other teams too and I'll never understand it. It is only a small few that act this dispicable but unfortunately, their behavior is so extreme that it makes the headlines and as you said...someone usually gets hurt. I would have to chalk it up to some sort of mental illness. We all want "our team" to win but very few would get violent when they didn't. It's poor sportsmanship and it's ignorance. I'm pretty sure that even the members of the losing team would not support this sort of behavior from their fans.

Well since the behavior of hard core fans reflects on the team, I would doubt they would want the brutish, rash reputation that would come with a bunch of hot headed, violent fans.

Actually its similar with mom son love.... our moms love us but when we do some faults they even beat or slap us.... it means too much love. Thats all.

I don't know if it really love or just obsession from maybe an empty or stressful life.

Obsession is the main reason of this violent reaction. Some people are too obsessed with the team that they're supporting that they couldn't accept defeat. This causes too much emotion in them that they feel the need to release such anger through physical violence.

First , it isn't just a mere game. It is their life. They may have jobs and wives or husbands and even children but their team is the love of their life! I mean they live and breathe their team . And when they lose,it is like being kicked in the stomach.many just go to a bar and drink or just sit and mourn . But for many they get furious. It is like they feel they were cheated and they are enraged! One person like this can be controlled but 50? That's when bad things happen. I know to a non sports fan it doesn't make sense . But I have been there. Your favorite team works so hard to get to the big game and blows it! I never would riot . I just feel sick and i mourn for a few months until the next season starts.

I have to admit - I have never been to passionate about foot ball and related sports so I have no clue. I suppose the obsession really isn't a problem until people start getting hurt. I can understand that Joe is upset because the team of his life lost, but I'm not ok with Joe starting a riot.

Who is Joe? all I can suggest is let Joe mourn. Give him some time and then try to cheer him up.

Hi Awinds I am in the US but hockey here in Orange County has had some near riots over one side losing and it to me is so foolish. People got hurt and one child got knocked do wn and the rioters walked over his leg and broke it. theres no damned excuse for such behavior either. I have never seen any rioting happen at t he ballgames I went to and they were major league. ONly once we had a streaker who ran the length of the baseball field with the stadium guards right behind him, most of us were really laughing too as the man really needed to lose about twenty pounds and you could really see his belly sort of flopping along with other body parts too. lol rofl for sure,. And one fan trying to catch a fly fell ou t of the stands and was hauled off in an ambulance. I really do not understand what motivates a riot like that at a game.

I think the Vancouver riot was after the Stanley cup hockey finals. The Boston Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks. That was really dumb! Fans probaly did it because they were angry The Bruins beat the Canucks! That is not right! No rioting after you team loses or win (in some cases),is called for! People get upset and frustrated! That ia a poor excuse for people to riot! Things get destroyed and people even get killed! Just shows how much people think before they do something!

They are human beings like us although sportsmen are expected to have the sportive spirit specially when they lose. It all happens mostly when they think injustice is done to them as they may feel that there has been some under hand dealings as well. I remember my bro-in-law never accepted defeat whenever we were playing chess he always blamed his noisy kids for not being able to concentrate!

I suppose "righteous indignation" can get a bit violent if the fans truly feel that wronged :)

Sports are serious business for some people. It is rather insane to say the very least. Soccer fans seem to be the most common but they are far from the only sport that have a lot of fans that tend to get a rather rowdy. It is rather serious business for a lot of people. There are people who are rather fans of their team. Then there are a lot of people who are rather obsessed by their teams. Almost to a terrifying point. Of course there can be a lot of mob mentality to a sporting event. All it takes is a small group to really get something rolling. Then again a lot of sporting events, people have a few drinks, things get rolling, and sometimes a lot of things can really get rolling right into the most horrific situation possible. Its just a game, its all in good fun but a lot of people take it rather seriously.

Maybe beacuse they are too extreme, and they cannot stand the failure of their teams.

They care too much of the result. I think, and they expect too much. When theyir teams fail, they just cannot accept that.

Too much passion maybe that is why riot after a team losses. Some get disappointed with how the game was officiated and some are just plainly at loss because the team did not perform up to their expectations. Nevertheless, I do not condone with those who start riots because a lot could get hurt in the process. Lets just keep it simple and put it in our heads that it's just a game, we'll get them next time. I heard an instance also that riots also happen out of celebration for the winning team, I think this happened with LA Lakers winning the NBA championships, though not sure what year it was.

oh yes indeed i do remember that as we came on the bus and we had to get out of there before we got hurt .it was just unbelievable and people were hurt, and police were there I mean come on we should all have just been happy the Lakers won but we could not even enjoy it as we had to get out before we got hurt.we were both older people whose bones were more brittle too. I was so disappointed at the way people acted. they were upsetting cars, it was just unbelievable to me that celebrating was being crazy., We left and got home, turned on the tv to watch that craziness in safety at least. our son wanted to know why we came back so early and we just pointed to t he TV.

People just invest to much into it then. I can understand celebrating but adults should have enough control to not join the wild crowd and star smashing the windows of cars and shops.

This really happens especially when we are talking about physical games such as soccer, basketball, baseball, etc. It is unavoidable for the fans to be so affected by the game. This happens when players go against the players of the opposing team when there is a dispute about a judgement of the umpire or referee, or when there is an accidental or intentional foul attacks.

Their sense of being wronged grows so much they express that through a riot?

Hello Awinds, This is always bad to see people involve themselves so much in the sports that they don't take it easy when their favourite team looses.I think the reason may be match fixing.Money !! they bet heavy sum of money which they loose and become violent.Sometimes it happens due to rivalry in the sports like INDIA PAKISTAN have in CRICKET.People do fight when any team looses as cricket is popular in both nations.

That is a good point - it does seem that larger, more general hostilities can get transferred into something like a sporting game between nations.

Maybe because those people had a wager with another individual and the sum of money in the pot is quite handsome. It is like losing a lot of money and the frustration will really build you up to start a riot on that impulse. Also, being very passionate about their team can really stem out frustration once the team loses. Such passion can really heat up the tempers which makes them unable to check their emotions and pick on fights. That's the reasons that I can only think of at the moment.

Loss leads to anger and anger to violent expression. Your wager point makes perfect sense. :)
