Some Nigerian men set up profiles on an Internet dating site that were fake. They used a photo of someone else and wrote up lies. One said that he was a Swiss man that was widowed. The other one said he was Dutch man. Ladies got very into thee two fake men and when they gave a sob story they sent them money as much as £60,000 overall. Another man doing fraud fell in love with the lady and then told her the truth. Amazingly she stayed interested. One man sent back to America $1000 and he seemed sorry for the fraud that he did.
What do think?
Why did these Nigerian men want to lie?
How did the ladies fall for their tricks and lose so much money?

It appeared in our local newspapers quite often here in Malaysia.
Quite a number of educated ladies in Malaysia being victims of
this kind of scams. They lost nearly RM1 million. Some even borrowed
money from family, relatives and loan sharks to help this 'so called'
British who plan to invest in Malaysia. Many has to face the loan sharks
that asked for debts repayment. It seems their stories is so convincing
and they plays on 'loneliness, friendships, love and emotions'.

I think these people are giving Nigeria a bad reputation. Not only are the well known bank-scams going around the internet coming from Nigeria, now these internet dating scam!
Although I saw a special last year where these scams were investigated, and found to be really coming from the UK.

It happens all over the world, doesnt matter which country at times but more so in the 3rd world countries. Give a good sop story and you can get anyone to give you money, then people will whinge about it when it's their own fault that they lost the money. for listening to someone.
There are a lot of fake profiles on sites, but after a time you can pick up which ones are fake and which ones are real. As a friend of mine puts it, on the site we met on. you have to shuffle thru the profiles, to find out who are real and those which are fake. He found i was real when i told him he's to old for what i was looking for. he's now a very close friend.

It's simple. It's either they really, really need the money, or that they could also have a wide operation scheme, collecting money from the unknowing victims. It's really sad that there are people who'd use the magic of love and romance just to get money.

Hi maximax8, I heard about this internet dating fraud from years ago and glad i never been victim myself because i believe traditional dating (dating a person we know in real life) is better than dating someone we only know by pictures. I dont mean to say that internet dating is bad, but we need to be careful, we need to investigate more before we decide to trust someone over the internet and never send money to someone you know from internet. Internet fraud is not only committed by Nigerian men but also from other country, its mean we need to be careful to everyone not just Nigerian men. Why did these men want to lie? Well, we know that some people wanting fast money no matter they got it from wrong way (scam, fraud, steal, etc). And how did the ladies fall for their trick: well I read in a forum (the forum is dedicated for internet dating fraud victim), most of them were lonely and wanted to find a love but they got the wrong person. I think they sent so much money because they blinded by love and they could not thinking clearly.

Forget about the money... Just imagine fake accounts lead to how many broken hearts a day...
people dont have the right to play with other peoples feelings... and especially cheating on them for money...

I have read about the scammers who create fake profiles on dating sites. The scammer contacts one of the other members of the dating site and pretends to be the person that he or she has always dreamed about. He sends his victim presents and lots of sweet words and after a while he makes up a sob story about an accident or some kind of emergency and asks the victim for financial help.
Why do people fall for those stories? I find it hard to understand why they choose to send lots of money to a person they have never met. The scammer pretends to be a sweet and charming person, he tells the victims the things they want to hear, but I still don't understand why they send money to a stranger they have met on the internet. Some women actually fall in love with the fake person that the scammer has created, and I read about one woman who was sure that she had found the man that she going to marry. When they discover that they have been scammed they lose both their money and their dreams about the perfect partner.
