Two of my very good friends recently started working at a marketing firm... Now normally working hours are 10am to 6pm that is 8 hours... My friends work there upto 9:30pm... Thats almost 12 hours a day... They are very fustrated as this happens alteast four times a week... They have been working there for the past 2 months and cant even ask for a raise in their pay... The manager under whom they are working makes them slog and conducts meetings as soon as its leaving time...that is 6pm...
They dont know what to do... I have advised them to search for better jobs...
please aadvice.. :-)

Manager is not the decision maker. I believe there is a higher ranking person that your friend can inform about this issue. Is there a Human Resource Dept? How many of them are complaining about the same? Sometimes the boss doesnt know about it and the manager might jeorpadise the company of his doings. Staffs might leave the company for the wrong reason and the manager is i believed agaisnt the labour law. There are also some managers think they are the boss and also like to take credits for the stuffs that he doesnt do. Take the matter to the higher level before leaving the job cause the same issue can happen anywhere too.

I had a word with my friends.... It seems that the HR Dept. is also involved with the manager and are very stubborn... if they come late in the morning and ask for the time to be adjusted in the evening (as they work overtime...)the manager asks them to get a NO OBJECTION LETTER from the HR dept. The HRD refuses to do the same...

I am going to guess they get paid a salary and not by the hour. Salaried employees often get abused in this way. If they were paid hourly this situation would be less likely to occur because most companies do not want to pay overtime unless they really have to. I am very adamant that employees be treated like people should be treated. If they can find other jobs I would suggest that. I wish them luck.

You check your labor laws. In the Philippines, workers work a minimum of 8 hours a day. Employers are required to pay overtime pay if you exceed the minimum 8 hours. Maybe your friends can ask if they are allowed to file for overtime. If not, they have to try to learn what they can from that company to gain experience and start to send applications to other companies and if an opportunity comes then they can easily go without the smallest amount of guilt.

Ohhh no working overtime without benefits is good but for more hour is not good. 9.30 is much more if 6 pm is leave timing then till 7 O'clock is no problem but 3 hours more is not good. Your friend should find new job. I was also doing overtime in my company but company give me not money for overtime but tea, biscuit, snaks is provided and only in a month 3 to 4 days overtime when urgent tender submission is there. But only 1 to 2 hours more not much more.

That kind of company is out of budget, and manager's know about it, that's why he always conduct meeting before leaving time, to maximize the working time. and you cant do anything if a meeting started....
therefore better to find a new job or company that wont took you for granted.

Basically there 2 type marketing firm (base on salary):
1. Firm who pays their workers with fixed salary income with bonus if worker achieve sales target. This kind of firm always push their worker hard for two simple reason: first, they afraid workers not work hard to achieve their sales target because workers already had fixed income (work or not); secondly, this kind of firm usually had contract with particular manufacture which they work for. If this firm doesn't meet sales target on their contract, they gonna lost job too.
2) Firm who pays their workers with commission of sales. They doesn't have to push their worker because the job itself is already make pressure.
After I read your friend problem, I believe they work on firm type I. It only two way to make extra money from this job is make over sales target which mean bonus will come. Secondly, try to get higher position on firm structure (you can do 2 way on this: seduce the owner or make over sales target for several month and then warn the firm if they doesn't raise your salary you will be gone ...... work for me every time.

Humm in such cases i suggest them to change the Job. No matter what it takes, because if they are not enjoying the work enviroment there. Then its not worth slogging and wroking hard for a job. Coming late nights and working over time is really a big issue. As a teenage employee there should not be more than 9 hours of working. I would suggest to tell your friends find a good flexible job which provides convineant timings, because if they continue in such envorioment, their life will be like hell.
