Apples are good source of many vital minerals some vitamins .Pectin contained in apples is a natural therapeutic ingredient helping in detoxifying and also in preventing decomposition of protein in the elementary canal . Malic acid helps in providing the necessary nutrition to the bowels, liver, brain, keeping them healthy and fit .Apples help in the prevention of diseases like Anaemia, Constipation, dental problems, dry cough, eye treatment and headache . So friends do you eat an apple everyday or you think the saying :"an apple a day keeps the doctor away" is just a cliched adage ?

I don't think apples could prevent constipation as it help to stop diarrhea...so if one is constipated and eat apples, the more he will get constipated. I heard (but have not researched on it yet), that apple is rich in anti-oxidant....anti oxidants prevent cells from damaging as it eliminates free radicals in the body that damages the cells....these damage cells if not prevented will multiply and will attach to a good cell....once they grew in number it will be a tumor that would lead to cancer if not stopped. so apples do not just keep the doctor away but also help to prevent cancer.

I am aware of this saying, but i have yet to verify, here in my place, apples don't grow in this climate, the apples we get is 4-7 days old, they come from far north side of india, coated with wax , probably to look fresh, the farmers use heavy dose of pesticides, fungicides, i am told, they push some kind of injections too, am alarmed.. Thanks for sharing Best of luck. Professor

Thanks for your inputs Sir .You are right the use of artificial instecticides and preservatives is shocking at present . The premise might have meant eating of fruits and healthy stuff to keep oneself fit . Apples like most fruits have some unique ingredients which have lots of health benefits . May be the abundance and popularity of apples prompted its designation in the axiom . Wish you good luck too . Have a nice day :)

While it's true that apples do contain a lot of nutritious vitamins and minerals, I would also like to think that this adage is also a message saying that eating healthy food everyday would keep us healthy, which is a basic knowledge but always neglected, especially with today's lifestyle of fastfood and junkfood in the daily diet.

i used to eat more apples than i do now, but then in the uk the best apples usually start to appear in the autumn. but i think the apples i can buy in the shop nowadays just aren't as nice to eat as the ones i used to buy. but i do still eat them. i think the saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" comes from a time when there was less international trade, and so the choice of fruit was more limited. but i also think that they are very good for us.

Thanks francesca5 for your response . Nice to know the season for apples in the U.S . You may be right the inadequacy of trade and limitation of variety in those time may have boosted the popularity of apples . Good luck to you !

I used to eat apples a lot, but now I don't eat them as much anymore. Not sure why, I guess I eat other fruit more now. I'm not really sure if an apple a day means you don't get sick. This isn't the case for me at least. Or perhaps I don't get sick that often just because I do eat other fruit.

Even though apples are indeed very healthy fruits to eat (and it's a good idea to eat one everyday), there are other factors that could cause people to get sick, such as other lifestyle problems (not working out, eating tons of junk food, etc.) So, in the end, an apple a day is only a part of keeping the doctor away...

I don't like apples so much as I like other fruits. I know about all benefits by eating apples but I can not force myself to eat them every day. I can't stand apple juice. Most often I use apples when I bake cake. Sometimes I put some apples inside chicken and then back it in the oven so the chicken is not so dry.
