When I was in the university studing laguages, I used to make a lot of things in order to achive the idioms, but what helped me more as having conversations with people who only speak that language,by the time I realized that the university is good but they don't teach you how a lot about to talk have a real conversation with a person of that language, they teach you a lot of grammar but the other you have to go and get it by interacting.
I am going to give you some tips to take advantages of your learning procces:
You may on a trip where there are only tuorist visiting your country, so you may talk to them and practice your vocavulary, in this way you won't be tempted to speak your mother tongue.
Another thing that is good but a little expensive and they used to do it in my university, is to send the student to the country that speak that language, to a family that only speak their mother tongue, in that way you will hear the language all the time.
And there a lot of more tips that I used to do when I was studing, of course the one that ask you to travel out of country I never could do it because I didn't have the money.
Well this can help you, if you need more help, I am here, don't hesitate in asking me for help.Blesses.

As f january this year I have been living in the spanish country that I am studying in- I'm only home on vacation now, but I tend to listen and understand more than i speak because I feel I'll sound like a fool if I use a wronng word of pronounce it incorrectly etc. But you are correct because I am still much better than I was 7 months ago.I really do want to feel more natural when speaking though and to build up my speed in talking and my confidence.

First of all, you must have an interest in learning new languages. Otherwise, it can be quite a chore. Enjoy the process of learning. You have to use it often, otherwise you might forget what you have learnt. What foreign language(s) are you studying in uni?

Wow...just curious...why don't you study medicine in a language that you are comfortable with? Anyway, all the best! Enjoy your uni days and happy studying.:)
