Something really strange happened last night

Me and my boyfriend went to bed at around 1:30 AM last night. As always, he falls asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. I had a hard time trying to fall asleep but I did somehow end up sleeping. Then I was woken up by a very loud helicopter-like noise. I live in New York City and my boyfriend's apartment is in Brooklyn where houses are everywhere so it was very strange to have helicopters near that area.. especially at 3:30 AM in the morning and so close to the houses. I was wide awake and very frightened. It was pretty loud and I felt it hovering above moving from left to right. I was so scared and I wanted to wake my boyfriend up but I didn't. I was somehow unable to move. The noise lasted for about 3-4 minutes then it slowly faded, probably flew away. After it was gone, I woke my boyfriend up and told him I heard helicopters.. he didn't seem to hear it at all.
This morning, I checked the news but there were nothing special in Brooklyn.
That's very strange to me, as something like this never happened to me before. Was it really just a helicopter? What do you think this could have been? Am I just paranoid?

I hope for your sake that it was just a helicopter! ;-)
Sometimes when you think you wake up you can still be slightly asleep, etc... there's many strange phenomena based around sleep, for example sleep paralysis: when you wake up but can't move your body for a short period first. Maybe you woke up from a dream inside a dream, or you had a strange feeling in your dream that you woke up with, and kept for a few minutes - amplified the 'strangeness' of the helicopter sound...
Maybe also just an auditory hallucination. =)
If it happens again, then it would definitely be strange!! =P

I've been is this situation before, you were stuck in your sleep, were you sure you were awake. this happened to me before but instead of a helicopter noise it sounded like bashing noises. everytime i tell someone they say i was stuck in my sleep, so i guess i was , but i really don't believe it

Oh you live in London.. I hope everything is fine for you! I've seen the news and it's terrible. Wish you the best.
I've heard about being stuck in your sleep before but I've never experienced it until last night and I am sure it wasn't a dream because right after the noise was gone I was able to move and I woke my boyfriend up.

Hi, Doritoes. Welcome to myLot, this was very strange! Very strange! I would have been very frightened to hear a helicopter just this close to my window. I mean, this would have made me feel very uncomfortable and fearful too. I think that you should make sure that you have very dark windows so that no one can see within your boyfriend's apartment.

I think you may just be paranoid...Helicopters can just pass anywhere, and I am sure there is a reason for that noise... Just don't mind it as long as it doesn't happen again, or you could just wake your boyfriend so you can both check out where it's coming from..
