Corruption is the Biggest threat to freedom?

Hi Friends,
A survey conducted exclusively for TOI sought to find out and its results shed light on four clear trends: young urban Indians greatly cherish the various freedoms our country offers; look forward to the many economic opportunities available; vehemently despise corruption; and, predictably, are patently cricket-mad.
When asked what the most important right/freedom is, most respondents chose 'the right to live and work anywhere in India', with this pipping free speech, the 'right to vote' and 'freedom of religion'.
Over 60% of respondents listed 'corruption' as the biggest threat facing India today, and 80% supported the Anna Hazare-led campaign to fight graft.
I also agree to what has been said about corruption and freedom, corruption is becoming bigger threat than terror.
What do you say?

your country is a very peaceful one, but there's a corrupted one or two in there like in my country. We have a "somewhat" free society where people fight every single day non-violently at the whitehouse and other public places for religion and much more. Anna Hazare that I noticed on wikipedia.org was of one that led non-violent protests. I don't know much about him, but he seems more honest than many i have seen.

People like Anna Hazare are very rare these days. A man with no bank balances and one who prefers to sleep on a mat in a temple, for years cant be an evil soul.We just hope that he succeeds in his movement to root out corruption in our administration. We may not get a second chance because there are no more Anna Harare's left in India. its now or never

no money for political non violent protests seems like a way to offer a lamb to a lion whose unwilling to be eaten alive. There has to be a way to fight corruption with insiders instead of peaceful protestors. Hope that sounds more legit.

He stays in a temple and has no home at all, he served Indian Army and now service Indian society. I have not seen Gandhi but this man seems Gandhi for me.
I just pray that he live long and we will see more Anna in future.

I disagree. Ignorance is the biggest threat to freedom. There will always be people who are willing to do unethical things for power, but will people always be so willing to ignore it? If we educate ourselves and refuse to just believe everything we are told, then we will be free. Freedom is taken from a people when they are not looking. Fear goes along with this, we are more willing to just accept anything if we are afraid. Our logic tells us that it's better to have a false positive than a false negative.

Everyone has been exposed to corruption. That is the nature of politics. I still disagree. I am taking it further and saying that ignorance is that which allows corruption. I do think that the reason why we allow so much and choose to trust our governments is because people are truly peaceful by nature. The people have the power. We just have to remember that it is ours.

May be that you have not seen corruption and not exposed to that but I feel that corruption is causing inflation and poverty in my country for sure.

I would disagree. Religion is the biggest threat today although corruption comes very close. Most of the problems that we face today are related to either caste or religion or race. The recent riots in London is a case in point. But to be fair to you i should admit that poverty plays a big role in many social problems and corruption is one reason why we are not able to alleviate poverty at the desired speed

That may be because on inequality but not because of religion. London has witnessed bad days but that does not mean it would not be back on track. As you said corruption is one of the reason for inequality in our society, our tax money is eaten up by these politicians. They are saving their money outside and our expenses are increasing every day because of price rise.

Corruption is rampant everywhere in the world. It does not exist in governments alone but also in small communities and the least in each one of us. But I disagree with corruption as the threat to freedom, the lack of education is the biggest threat to freedom because when people do not have education they prone to be receptive of abuses without having the knowledge to defend themselves. The uneducated tend not to answer back to those in power because sometimes they do not know what to do, where to run and who to get help. Education sets us free. We must be informed of what is ours and be prepared to defend our rights.

I think you are Indian. As a Indians we are shameful to encourage this evil because it is started from us only. With the awareness by Anna this evil will be removed to certain extent. We hope that that day will come.
