^^Like the female below me said, you should include what income you make and stuff like that, that will better help us help you with finding the right place to live..because in new york a housing that costs 500-1000 may be expensive whilst it may not be in other states as the income there is a lot higher

Well, are included in your question a few unknown quantities. How do you define e.g. "not so expensive?" What in NYC "is not so expensive," is like in other parts of the world are "very expensive".
And how do you define "average income"? This can be very different in Germany than in NYC.
NY is a large city and like all big cities there are areas to avoid that should be and others are safe - that it was "really in New York so bad that one night, no longer alone can take to the streets" is just nonsense as if one would say the same of Cologne, Hamburg, London or Beijing.

In Manhattan there are some residential areas. However, these are very expensive. Most people live in Queens and Brooklyn and commute daily to Manhattan.
Both neighborhoods are relatively safe. But even here there are places I should avoid it. Through parks at night, of course, you should not run. You should also take a taxi at night instead of the subway.
In general, New York is no more dangerous than other cities. On the contrary. The politics of the last years of New York has even become very safe. And more and more bars, museums, galleries, etc. so slow to establish itself outside of Manhattan. So even more is "upscale life" in these neighborhoods, making them even safer.
A cost alternative to New York is still New Jersey. Directly across from Manhattan cheaper, but a lot.
Families with children often move to a suburb of New York and commute by train into the city. There it is for kids just fine, because there are whole houses instead of just a small apartment, gardens and playgrounds.
My (former) English teacher who lived 8 years ago, some years have been very satisfied and happy in Brooklyn. Then her husband for 8 years was here transferred to Indonesia. Here they got their two children. Now her husband has in turn had a good job offer from the U.S. and they have declined. Now they have taken the children but due to a house about one hour's drive from New York is close to the coast.
