When I went to college, my parents wanted me to study medicine. I knew they wanted me to have a good career, and I did give very serious thought to it, but I just didn't have the interest in medicine. My interest was in the business studies, and so I majored in that. My career now is in the business sector, and I am quite happy working internationally. How about you ? Did you major in what your parents asked you to when you went to college ? Or , did you take another subject ?

My parents' advises are very important to me. However, they don't often ask me about my decisions. They want me making them by myself. When I was a pupil, I feel happy about this. But now, I wish my parents let me some advice about universities and subjects. Listening advises is very important with us, my friend. But not easy to get advices.

My parents never told me they had a preference for my major. They just wanted me to study whatever I thought would make me happy and what would interest me.

Hi, hope you are doing fine. I did not. My mom wanted me to be a teacher but i did not have the heart for it. I wanted to be an executive secretary then, but i married at 18 so i did not become one. But I am happy with my job now as one of the secretarial staff in our city council's secretary' office. I do the schedules for their meetings and the communications. I attend the meetings, take the minutes, transcribe them into journals and some related things that my boss asks me too. I did end up as an executive secretary but i love and enjoy ,my job and i do not have regrets that i did not follow what my mom wanted be to be. Have a good day!

No, because they pretty much left the decision in my hands. Of course one parent only got their Associates Degree and the other didn't even go to college. Granted, they were happy to give me their advice and support, but the final decision was left in my hands. Which is really the best thing, is that there are times where parents live through their children and it is rather showing a lot of the time. I think that I made the right choice in the end. At least mostly the right choice. Only time will tell in the long run. Of course before I started, the economy had not been thrown right into the sewer. Therefore there are just a lot of times where you just got to follow your instincts, what you want, and hope for the best to say the very least.

I'm still on college and I study Medicine. My parents always wanted that I go for a Medicine college, so, since I was a kid, I never thought about another profession.

Personally I am not sure what if anything my parents were expecting me to do with my life, and major in when I went to college. But since I only went to College one semester and was not able to handle things there I never went back. So overall working in Fast Food for yrs. probably was not what my Mom would have wanted me to do but it gave me good Customer Service skills. But I guess overall personally it does not really matter what they wanted. It all depends on if I am Happy with my life the way it is now.

I'm studying in polytechnic and in my final year already. Well, my parents didn't really expect me to go into a certain course, everything was up to my decision and the course that I'm in now is called Network Systems and Security. Initially, it sounds cool and interesting but the happiness was short-lived. I didn't perform well in this module. Everything was about computer networks and routers and to add salt into my wound, I suddenly lost interest in these stuffs. Changing to another course would seem too late already and from there, I knew I'm in for trouble. In my second year, a new passion has came to me---aircrafts and I began to read up everything about aircrafts and luckily for me, the school has a policy for students to take up interdisciplinary modules. I then took up aerospace during my current year and it ended recently. It was really fun and interesting and almost everything the lecturer talked, I knew a lot! However, it's just a small module and it holds little importance. Now I'm quite lost as to whether I should change fields next time or not. I realize that I'm good in designing and sketching and also know a lot about aircrafts and aviation. It's hard for me to make a choice now.

I haven't majored in any course yet and I chose my course, my parents didn't chose it. I think it's important for someone to realize what he wanted to do before he even reaches highschool because it's, then, he will be forming a rough plan for his life. To put it simply, it's best if we become responsible at a young age in order for us to have a better path in life.

I am a graduate of BS Accountancy, it is not our choice but it is what within our capacity to pay. My parents wanted a course which could easily give me a job right after college and that they would be sure of that I could finish it. Today, when someone was asking my advice and I know that what they want is to have an immediate work, not high paying course and with little requirements to finish the course, I immediately told them to take a Commerce degree preferably Accountancy major.

my parents actually never pushed me into anything my entire life, i made all my own choices about everything.. they did try to guide me and help me, but the decision was always fine :)

In my case, my parents just let me choose what career I wanted to pursue. They also want somebody in the family to be a doctor or lawyer but my siblings and I weren't inclined to those paths. But still my parents didn't pushed us to take those career and gave us the freewill to choose our courses. Good thing they let us choose as I am really happy now with what I chose to do.

I decided personally on what major I would take. Most of the time I am the one making decisions for myself especially when it comes to personal matters. In this case where a course of study is involved, I personally choose what I want and what really is my interest, so I end up taking electrical engineering because it is what i am interested or fascinated with. It doesn't makes sense to me that my parents (or anyone) would force or impose on me what should I take academically because in the end i will the one bearing the difficult effects of it.

Interests are not formed that forcing by others. Our parents have many wishes but we have our own interest in certain fields. We have to make convince our parents to do work interested fields. At the same time, we have to make confidence in that matter also.

If my dad his way, I would've majored in engineering in college; if my mom had her way, I would've majored in music. Those are both of their areas of study and what they work in now. However, neither of those were my passion. I have always loved technology and computers and people. So...the best major/minor combo that the school I went to offered was a Business major with Office Administration concentration and a Business Technology minor. The business major was my blanket while the office admin let me work with people, and my minor gave me my computer "fix" lol. It made for a great combination because first and foremost, I was happy with my areas of study. Secondly, I only had to take four extra classes to fulfill my minor, which was great. I really think each person needs to choose for themselves because that's how they'll truly be happy. My parents paid my full way through college, and they, of course, still let me pick my major although the definitely had their preferences. I'm glad I was able to do what I wanted, and the most important thing is that I'm working in my area of study now, so I definitely used my degree!

Nope. I studied exactly what I wanted to study. My parents were pretty supportive, despite the fact that I'm pretty sure they would have preferred that I study something very different. But, if I am right, they haven't said as much. Just the fact that they let me decide for myself is nice, and I really can't complain about. So, that's probably why I don't say anything. I studied what I wanted, and I'm happy about it. That's what matters the most, in my opinion. I made myself happy.

Hi greenline~ I wanted to study medicine myself. I wanted to be a Medical Assistant or Nurse. I started College by taking some courses in the Medical Field, but left school when my father got sick and had to go to work to help my family. I did end up working as a Medical Assistant, but not the way I had wanted and then also a Legal Assistant. Both jobs were stressful, but I loved working in Medicine and had various jobs with different types of Doctors. But, sadly I spent more time as a Legal Secretary/Assistant which I didn't really like as much, but the salary was higher and I needed the money. Unfortunately, working for Lawyers was extremely stressful and unpleasant and I was never really happy.

My parents were just happy I went, as for my kids, I won't choose a field for them, I will encourage them to do what they want to do.

Nope. I was lucky enough to have a parents that let have things my way. Although I feel eventually it could have been better if I majored in another field, I am still grateful that nobody actually forced me to do something that I did not want to do.
