Not a diet, a way of eating

I know you have heard this over and over again, no diet works forever. Well I am trying a way of eating based on The Glycemic Load Diet, The Atkins diet is similar but not as healthy. Since I have a small blood sugar problem, this seems to come with old age, I needed to strictly control my carbs. So instead of worry about calories I have been very careful with my carbs. I am in my third month and am not missing all those carbs, have lost 7 pounds and only have 12 to go. I feel good and am sleeping well. you might want to try this plan. You still need to exercise, I walk and do Yoga.

hi savypat are you by any chance pre diabetic? I have been a diabetic for many years and our diabetes nurse educator taught us about the glycemic index and it does work. I had been using it when I was still cooking for myself. Also it is not hard to follow as most of the foods I like are the ones that are lower in the index. I had all those booklets when we were evicted and forced in homelessness., our stuff still in storage so now i am overweight again and really need some literature again. so perhaps a visit to the library via the access bus.I know that as little as fifteen percent weight loss will help control blood sugar better.its much harder here In gold crest as they made it vehemently clear they do not follow a diabetic diet. well I am trying the best I can to cut the carbs here but getting exercise is hard, I am physically handicapped and walking is a big problem since I an now using a walker. So I need some type of exercising that will get my hear rate up and my metabolism up too.

Hatley, can you get some little hand weights? Or even cans of vegetables works. Check out some of the things you can do for upper body with light hand weights. Bottles of water are one and one quarter pound, so they would work well too. If you can find "sittercise" on television it might be something you would like to do, as it is done in a chair.

My father has the same issues to. He controls his diebetes type II by food and what is called Bitter Melon. You get the Bitter melon from the vitamin shop and just take one before your meal and it kinds acts like actos. It opens up your cells and allows you to use the sugar and get rid of it properly. He too has to watch what he eats and he is great with that. I am soo proud of him.

I agree that diets are not as effective as healthy eating plans, and I try to monitor my carbs and use mostly whole foods. Need to be stricter. I know I feel better when I do. I have heard that if we live long enough we will all become diabetic. I do not quite believe that. Several people in my family have been diagnosed as diabetic within recent years. My dad was put on insulin about six weeks ago. I do not have money or medical insurance right now, so I had best be good about food and exercise and proper hydration. I am all for making healthy choices, most of the time.

Of the people in my family, I have always been the one with the healthier eating habits, and I pretty well am convinced that if I keep up with exercise I will not become diabetic. I read that about bitter melon. I actually have my Native American tribal membership if I can lay my hands on the cards. That entitles me to free treatment right now for whatever I need, but especially for diabetes. My niece and sister get their supplies in that way. Although I enjoy bread, I prefer whole grain. I do not really care for fries, chips, or pop, but really relish a microwaved potato with lean toppings. I will make sure I get treatment if I do have health issues.

I have to watch my sugar as well. I seem to put weight on my tummy and the trouble is because I have wide hips it is not as noticeable. I do a lot of walking and weight training. I did find a book on a similar diet but it was also for those with gluten problems. I find it a bit hard looking for products that do not contain sugar or at least the bad kind with the corn syrup stuff in it. And they cost a bit more.

I just pretty much gave up sugar all together. Sure I missed the sweets at first but now, two months later I find I don't even want them and if by chance I get any sugar, it taste terrible. I also don't eat rice, corn or white flour. My biggest problem was getting enough fiberso I add it to my morning oatmeal.

I love oatmeal and I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. I also heard there are other things, like chia seeds, and wheat germ, etc. but they have to add them to something. I think you could try dark chocolate as long as it is 70 percent cocoa or better. They are not as sweet. But I find it depends on the bar. I know that some have rather large squares and some are very small It is better in the middle. I eat brown rice, and sometimes eat corn. I think I have gone through the extreme cleaning stage and am now at the stage when I can add a little extra and not worry about going on a binge. Sort of moderation.

Thanks for the best response. I find the hardest thing is that I am large built and do not believe it when someone says I lost weight plus when I get depressed, I want to eat.

I have almost given up dieting as I've tried many forms of dieting but all are met with failures. The problem is I have no strong will to continue the strict regimes required by these dieting formulas. I needed to see fast result but it just doesn't happen to the years of gluttony eating which had evidently abused the hourglass figure that was once my pride.

Where there is a will there is a way. Get a jump rope, dance to music while you brush your teeth, carry a small weight in the office or get the ones you put on your leg or arm and wear them for a couple of hours, start at 15 mins. and work up to it. anytime you are standing you can do leg strethes. Or just ben over and touch your toes when ever you can. There are many exercises you can do while sitting at the computer or on the phone, look it up on the Internet. I know you can do it, just make up your mind.

Well a lot of the time people really do need to remember that weight is more than just excercise, and excercise is more than that a way to loose weight. If you excercise while eating anything you want, you often will defeat the purpose of excercising. Most people fail to learn this, and this is what shows like Biggest Loser help instill.
But even with things like Diabetes cutting carbs is good as long as they are the Bad ones, and also what works for one is not always going to work for the other. But if you are still continuing to loose weight by doing this, this is a Good thing for sure.

I think diet and exercise is probably not the final solution. We may have to reduce our food intake as well. And it seems some people are generally heavy built and it is their natural way their body is. But putting it altogether should help us stay healthy.

I agree that in order to lose weight and feel good it is a matter of changing the way we eat for good and not just go on a diet because they rarely work anyway. It sounds like you are doing very well and cutting back on the carbs sounds certainly easier than counting calories that’s for sure. You look after yourself so well with your diet and exercise, good on you, you will more than likely be around for a very long time!

That does sound like a much healthier way of eating than using the Atkin's diet and you are also right in the statement of saying that no diet works forever. I personally have found that works the best for me is to eat those things that I want to eat but to eat in moderation. Since I started doing that, I've lost a fair amount of weight and I definitely find that I have a lot more energy than I used to have before thinking about what I eat.

it seems that you are on your way to becoming healthier..i do agree that there is no diet that lasts forever..in order for people to stay healthy is to eat all in moderation..as for your health, that's a good way to stay healthy..we should all be conscious in what were eating because too much is dangerous for all of us..we should also tie it up with exercise..

Well that's really nice. Go and loose that remaining 12 pounds :) There are certain diets wherein you need to reduce your carbs and increase your protein intake. Proper eating should be a way of life. Because of so many restaurants and burger stands around it so difficult to resist it most of the time. But once your stomach and your mind setting is already trained to eat only the health ones it would not be difficult anymore. Happy loosing weight :) Go girl!
