When Davao City approved the Comprehensive anti-smoking ordinance i'm one of the citizens who was very delighted, because i can ride a jeepney without covering my nose because most men (including the drivers)are puffing their different cigarettes brand along the travel.. The ordinance did not totally ban smoking instead prohibits smoking in public places. however, just this weekend, when i'm on my way to our store in the the northern part of Davao, OMG, even jeepneys carry a big sign of "NO SMOKING" hard headed people refused to understand what was written. They keep on puffing their cigarettes one after the other. are they ignorant of the law? what was the worst thing is that, even the driver smokes!!!!!!! i encountered a lot of these everyday. City government should post hotlines in the form of stickers wherein abusive drivers, passengers, etc..... will be punished accordingly..... implementation of this ordinance must be reviewed....

Hi mmespino, I am a smoker, but I am a supporter of this ordinance. And when I heard the first time they launched this one, I am glad, as I too don't like the idea of smoking in a public vehicle like jeepney's and buses etc. I would want to smoke in a place designated as a smoking area as non-smokers would not dare go in that place and At least, I and the other smokers are causing damage only to ourselves and not to other people . I just hope the authorities will really exert efforts and be strict about this ordinance. Look at Singapore, there are also smokers in their country, but through discipline, their country is clean and better.

yes, discipline is the issue here that's why laws should be strongly implemented, no matter how petty that law/rule be. abusive people are disregarding petty rules which only describe of their undisciplined character. We should always keep in doing the right thing even if nobody is watching..

hey my_january! i salute you for being such a considerate smoker... most smokers don't give a crap about other people... they just smoke whenever and wherever they want to... so kudos to you!!!

Smoking is really bad. It is not just bad for the smokers but it affects the other people around the smoker. It has an effect on the children too. I really get affected by people smoking because it gives me a headache. It is a good idea to ban smoking altogether and hopefully people will respond and obey the law. If they don't they should expect some punishment.

The law against smoking in public places has been for years in Metro Manila also but now they have revived this and seems to have given it a stricter implementation. I hope this would be through and through. It is just so sad to see that there is a law and yet it is not implemented and nobody is even apprehending the law breakers. I so hate jeepney and even bus drivers who smoke while driving. They are giving their passengers all the second hand smoke. Imagine they are doing their vice at the expense of others!

it's really true. i hate those people who are sharing their mess to others. and sad to say, second hand smoke is more dangerous.

Mmespino, I'm sorry to hear this. You might want to contact the local police or some other government official. Smoking in NO SMOKING areas can be a serious offense, especially here in the US. Maybe if the police are notified, some of these issues can be resolved. Smoking in public areas can be a huge hazard to health, especially to younger people. I hope that you're able to get some sort of response! That is insane. Good luck! Annie

exactly... it takes forever to pass laws in congress... it takes a lot of effort and government funds to implement it... and then after a few weeks or so, a month if we're lucky, the law/ordinance is buried into oblivion... what a waste!

hi:) smoking on public area is very hazardous to health, it's more dangerous on the people who can inhale that second hand smoke, so this law need to be implemented seriously, and the citizens should also do their part to report them into the authority, so they will not ignore the law anymore next time.

the problem is, even if you report it to the authorities, they'll say okay we'll take care of this... and then what? they'll just ignore your report... this is what happens 99% of the time...

There are some places in the United States where smoking is prohibited in private businesses where people may gather... Restaurants, bars, employee break-rooms, etc. There are even laws specifying how far away from the door of these places that you must be to smoke outdoors.. If outdoor smoking is even allowed at all. While laws like these are made, most governments and law enforcement agencies aren't going to waste their time and resources with something so petty as there are real and far worse crimes to deal with. Id think that if a driver or a passenger in a public transportation vehicle are not complying with the law, that youd be able to call the governing agency for the transport to report the passenger as well as the driver.

Hello mmespino, some people had been addicted to this since they're teens so it's really hard for them to stop smoking, ignorance of the law is common among us filipinos as to why we never prosper.i believe it also requires enforcers to remind them that they have a law to follow maybe the bail isn't that heavy as to why they kept ignoring the law. have a nice day

i think there are really people who are not able to follow the rule not until they are punished. if they are caught then that will be the only time they can respect other people and stop smoking. i wish someone reprimands and fines them asap.
