One of the first things we do in making new accounts is think of the best avatar that would actually expresses who we really are.Whether it is our own picture or a cartoon image, it would still be a reflection of us in a way.
But this avatar could be used against you, if u get unlucky one day.
Like my lady friend who was victimized in myspace. She admits she wasn't very cautious of who to accept as friends there, until one day she found out that one sicko in her list cloned her page and used her avatar. She found it a little too late for this sick person was able to message her friends on her behalf and sending them offensive messages. Some of her friends wasn't aware that it is a different person, so they felt offended.Luckily , she found out about this and she was devastated and had to close her account.
Has it ever entered your mind that somebody might be using your picture online, and worst for devious reasons ? Scary isn't it.

Oh that's sad for your friend. At FB, i don't put my picture as my avatar. I customized it, so that only my friends could see my photos. I don't accept friend's request of those i don't know.
I think, we have to be careful in joining social networks.

I like changing my Avatar every now and then. Sometimes, they are my real pictures and sometimes they are just plain avatars like what i have now.

yes, it is scary. it seems like if there's anyone who has been using your friend's profile, it may be that person know your friend. or it can also be a hacker who you are not really familiar with and just used her avatar to make people believe that he/she is your friend. it's really dangerous to have profiles which are exposed too much on private.

Yes that is true.Yet sometimes we felt we have to post some kind of a real photo for the sake of gaining trust isn't it.I always privatize my profiles and is really choosy who I allow access to it.Still we have to be on lookout for the friends already in our page for some can be clever enough to add your friends first , then add you.

I'm very proud of my Avatar because it took 20 years to learn. No one that I know (of any age) can do that pose, not even my 6 yr old Granddaughter. I'm not worried that anyone would misuse my Avatar. I would not even dream of changing it. It means so much to me. (Not the least bit scary!)

I too am a bit worried that my real pictures might be misused on the net. That is why I prefer to use images like flowers, trees etc instead of my real life images.
