Movie Direction Plays an Important Role

I'm a big fan of new and different styles of direction in movies. Some movies that have a bad story or poor acting can even be directed very well, but right now I cant think of any...oh, a couple of the Raiders of the lost ark, and a couple of the star wars saga were like that...(in my opinion). Now I recently watched these 2 movies that are totally unrelated, but both have great Style and Cinematography... The first is Sucker Punch. The direction of the fantasy scenes was excellent, even without the special effects the Idea behind the movie and the plot points were great. Although I felt the acting left a little to be desired... Second, Scott Pilgrim VS the World. This one was directd like it was a video game with comicbook elements, which is not new but this was done extremely well. the fight scenes were well choreographed and the story, although a little juvenile, was interesting enough. and there is actually an all star cast of young up-and-comers who did a fine job in their roles. Have you seen either of these 2 movies? I recommend them to anyone that's a fan of direction.

i haven't seen any of these films.. but when i read this discussion, the first films i thought of were pulp fiction, and kill bill.. obviously both by the same director, yet both directed very differently.. i think these two films are a perfect example of how excellent direction can make even the crappest storyline ever [kill bill].. seem like a really great movie!

You are right about kill bill....that storyline was cr@p. and the direction and fight choreography made that film. good for you for noticing and reminding me of that one.

I've not seen either but I know what you mean about the importance of the Direction. Take "500 Days of Summer", at it's hear it's just another roantic comedy but the delivery of it, the choppy styling and the parallel lines of the love story as a romantic date is matched up to a moment of bitter break up actually makes it feel new and different. "Memento" is another good example as at it's heart it's just another thriller but by Christopher Nolan playing the storyline in reverse makes it feel so different.

havent seen Summer but you are right about Memento the direction was great, I felt that the story was a little difficult to follow though.

I like Quentin Tarantino films. I know that his films are violent but his point of view is really interesting. I remember when I watch Pulp Fiction first time. Convention is great as the film it divided for 4 parts and this 4 parts are separates stories. You really have to watch them all to know the idea of this film. I also enjoyed Kill Bill both parts and those film got many kinds of elements like comics, Japanese films even some of westerns. I found it very interesting.

Quentin Tarantino is a great director. Yes even if his movie was lacking in something, it was made up or by great directing.
