Hi Vi! I also heard about it I think from Kris, she mentions it once in her show if I am not mistaken. And also I've heard it from Kun...maybe he can give a better explanation on it since I guess this is a Chinese belief...all I know is that they said August is an unlucky month? I don't know but they advice to be more careful...hehe And I remember, I always hear my grandma says that August is a month of "taghirap" and I still hear it from some elders, I don't know how true it was...

Oh, August is a month of "taghirap"? Well, I think it's somehow in the middle month of the year. That's why it can be called that. I am not sure how true it is also. Let's see how kun knows about this. Advice more to be careful from what? We are not sure what will happen next so, how will we be careful then? Some says also that we should not have flights or leave the house or move anything or fix anything. What will happen if we do it then? Does it make a bad luck?

I don't know as well, maybe just reminding of taking precautions in everything we do? hehe I don't really have any idea about it since I don't really believe in anything like this, maybe its just one of those superstitious beliefs? Again I don't know. haha maybe the best that we can do is to pray and always ask for God's guidance and help in everything we do...

I never heard about it, so maybe it's a belief in your country? Just like in a Catholic belief here in Indonesia (I don't know if it is world wide belief) November is the month for he deaths. It merely means that it is the month to pray for all beloved family and friends who had already passed away...

haha, IT's a part of the chinese culture according to the chinese calendar. We believe July(chinese calendar), which is august now, is the opening of hell gates for ghost to come to mortal world to have fun.. haha =D Some may be out to visit family members, while some can be out for revenge and whatever. That's why there are alot of offerings, burnings for them, even performances known as 'getai' for them to enjoy.. haha

Oh, yeah ghosts do come visit the living world! I have heard of it. But what does it affect then if we do the opposite things from it? Like doing wedding ceremonies of have flights, even fix anything in the house? Some says it's not a good idea for chinese in this month. How true is it then?

This is actually the belief and practice of the Chinese people. In this month, they do not go through with construction. They do not start business. They think everything will not fall into place. They do not have wedding ceremonies. They just simply stop, and in commemoration of the ghosts. Incidentally, it is also wen the Ramadan happens. This is the most sacred month of the Islam belief were there is great celebration. They have celebrations and festivities, and is the month of joy. I now wonder what would happen if a Chinese marries an Islam. What would happen during the month of August.

I think this is a belief in the Chinese people. The belief is utterly uncomfortable to believe and it doesn't happens too. The think that all the hots will be out from the tomb during the august and this is the one of the reason why august is a ghost month but for us people we don't have such months.

Well, that's what Chinese people believe in... not all people believe in it but then, it can be it's like also some traditions and beliefs on other countries that there are people who doesn't follow traditions or so about their cultures but then it's still okay to live without believing in it.

GHOST month is a "celebration" that is known to the chineses. we believe that every 7th month of the chinese calendar (it fell on august this year) all ghosts are being sent out of the purgatory, or wherever they are.. its is the month of their "vacation" from where they are kept. hehe so they come here, to where the living people are. so during the ghost month, it is forbidden to move, transfer houses, and it is even not allowed of us to move furnitures, or to fix anything at home.

oh, really? we can't even move furnitures or fix anything for a month? during august? what if you happen to fix or move anything? what does it bring you then? so, it is really true that every august, ghosts do come where the living people are? are you a chinese?

I used to live in Taiwan and they have ghost month this month. They think it's when the ghosts some back and roam the earth so people are afraid to go places. Usually during ghost month you can travel easily because it's not a lot of people going places because they don't like to leave the house.

Hello dreamy, so you are saying it is really unsafe to move places during ghost month or is there really something to be scared of? I am really confused in here...

Hi annavi! I haven't heard that August is a "ghost month", but I do believe in ghosts as do some of my friends. And I have been having some occurances in my home that have been happening lately to lead me to believe that I might have a "spirit" who is annoying me again. I have had things happen before and have had people telling me that they have "felt" a "presence" in my home and not of the "good" kind. Years ago things would "go missing" and some would show up in places that I wouldn't ever put them. Now things are starting to disappear again right after I put them down and go back to get them! I am not kidding and do believe that there possibly might be a "presence" again. Like yesterday, I put down a lighter on my bookcase, went to do something else, went back and it was gone! It was nowhere to be seen! I also lost a flashlight last week that also disappeared into thing air! I don't care if others don't believe in spirits or ghosts, I do!!!

hello opal! this is spooky my friend! how long have you been living in that place? are you living alone? maybe the one living with you is just scaring you isn't it? well, i have experienced that thing as well before. when i was still young. i happen to undress my shorts then when i get back, i don't know where it came. then after two or three days i have seen it in the laundry. when no one has touched it. have you blessed your house since the last presence came? maybe you should give a house blessing.

Hi annavi, I think you are talking about the Chinese belief of the "Hungry Ghost Festival" which falls on the seventh month of the lunar calendar, which is about August or even September. We have a major festival here everywhere, activities include burning of joss-sticks and incense paper, stage performances, auction of auspicious items, offering to gods and ghosts etc. I do go to the temple during this period to do some chanting and pay respects to our ancestors. I think it is a good custom for it reminds us to be grateful for what our ancestors have done for us. I do believe that customs should be followed and perpetuated.

What do you mean by hungry ghost festival? Is it a good thing or a bad thing to happen and do you celebrate it then? I don't have idea about this one. What do you do in this times?

Hi there annavi! The term ghost month for August can be rooted to the Chinese tradition. There is a Chinese festival and tradition called Ghost festival which falls on the seventh month of the Chinese calendar which is August for us. They say that ghosts and spirits at this time roam in the earth to visit us. But really I don't believe in ghosts. I just dread the Ghost Month because they say it affects the stock market and I am an investor in the market. They say that putting out money during this period is not good that's why most investors, mostly of Chinese nationality, will pull out their investments and will not spend money in the stock market come August. This in turn will pull down the value of the stock market since no one is buying. Well that is just what I know from that. Maybe you can try to search the internet regarding the Chinese tradition of Ghost Festival.

Hello Agent! Gulaman is delicious by the way! Well, yes I am also aware of that. August month means kinda bad luck for businesses or even finding jobs, i wonder if relationships go on with it... really don't have idea about it. I just hope there's still good things occur on such times, not just the bad ones. It even says, it's better to avoid flights and don't leave their houses or even fix anything. I don't know what will happen if we ignore the rules of it.
