Some famous athletes and entertainers earn millions of dollars every year. Do you think these people deserve such high salaries? Some athletes and entertainers earn millions of dollars annually. On the contrary, an elementary school teacher, on average, probably makes less than $35000 a year. I think the fact that this difference is commonplaces is a sign of our society's misplaced values. It shows that we put more importance on entertaining our children than on educating them. It seems that the careers that are the least values in our society often are those that are the most important. Why is this? What could be the reason?

You are so right and its a shame that society places such values on the entertainment business. If teachers were paid better there would be so many more teachers and good ones at that. When a person who plays dress up for movies, stage, etc.... and makes millions doing so, something is wrong with our thinking. A teacher should be making millions and a actor should be making what a teacher makes. I bet more people would be teachers then actors. I believe the reason for the difference is what society thinks is more important and that is what I call a travesty of our world as it is today. People put to much on being famous and rich fast instead of studying to become a famous doctor, chemistist, or engineer.

Yes you are right but we again need to think. I once thought the same like you. But the price of anything we buy depends on both the supply and the demand. So in this regard we need to think once more. What about the number of entertainer? Can everybody become a singer? I don't think so. So I am thinking that one of the reason of high payment for them is due to the scarcity of such people. There are many teachers now and of course almost every one can become teachers but not every one can become singer, actor or footballer.

I am sorry mylot community for the double post. This is due to the slow speed of my net. I am in the college and I am using LAN. By this time all the students uses net and the net is very slow. I once pressed "post comment" but before being posted the page saying " the page cannot be displayed" appears and so I thought that my comment was not posted. I then go back and pressed "post comment" once more. But to my surprise I am seeing to same comment and now I am sure that it is due to net problem. I will try to avoid doing it from next time. I am writing this to make clear that it is not my intention to earn more by making double post.

Gifted people are earning good as their skills are more appreciated than those who took years to attend professionalism in their line of careers. But it is not the same in many countries where entertainers or athletes don't earn as much as people in the professional careers. Most of the entertainers in our country are poor and when they retire from acting or singing they can't even make ends meet.

Yes, most of them has very short careers. Athletes may be too old in their early 30s. Many of them gamble early in their lives on making it big in the sports or entertainment world and deny themselves a good education. They have little chance of a stable careers, so they need to earn enough money to support them for a long time. On the other hand, most of us are not going to earn $10 million in a lifetime of work. So it is hard to sympathize with people who do.

Agree. Those entertainers and sports people have short career lifespan. They have to strike while the iron is hot.

They do earn an awful lot but whether or not it's too much, I really don't know.Their employers are willing to pay the price for them and society idolizes them which makes them more valuable to their employers. Teachers are also very valuable but we, the taxpayers, are the ones paying their salary and so teachers don't get nearly what they really deserve.

I really do think that the incomes of entertainers are far too high because if it really came down to it, the world would be able to go on without people in these professions. On the other hand, I also think that the income of people that perform vital roles in society, like teachers, public servants, etc are far too low. I don't know what the reason that celebrities are so high paid is, but I really don't think that it is right and I think that it is something that really needs to change.

I thought about the issue several years ago .And my conclusion was that it is normal in modern society in which money prevails over anything . The reason why athletes and entertainers can make lots of money lie in their market value . Sponsers pay them for bigger profit . With celebrity's influnce ,manufacturers can sell more products . It can't be ignored that only top athletes and hot entertainers can earn a lot with their fame . Most of atheltes and entertainers are just common people ,some even are lower than the average . There is no denying that teachers are more important to the society than athletes and entertainers . It doesn't mean that they must earn more, though . Because it is sponsers and manufacturers that pay the most .

Thanks for your response and they are good. I understood your points very well. It is good that sponsors are paying a handsome some to those famous people and that makes them the high earner. Then why do you think that there are no sponsors for teachers? We know and you have clearly stated that teachers are more important than entertainer.

You are correct. Teacher is given less importance by low salary even he or she makes fruitful citizens to the country. It is pity to say.

The market determines who gets paid how much. Teachers are paid less. Sports teams make hundreds of millions of dollars every year. These teams earn fabulous profits from radio and television rights, as well as everything sold at the concessions stands. The same is true for movies. They are produced by studios that make huge profits annually. These enterprises can afford to pay their entertainer and sports figures huge salaries, because those athletes and film stars draw people to the entertainment. Why are we willing to pay so much to see a ball game or a movie, but not for a good teacher? Maybe it is because we want distraction; we want to be entertained. May be it is because we think of education as a right, which entertainment seems like a luxury. We expect to pay for our luxuries.

People born with a silver spoon can never experience poverty. They will be classified as influential and the mass accepts them because of their status in life. No matter how you get educational but does not have any influential people around you, you are just going to start by scratch. Do you think that the richest person in this world started only by having a good education? no, they live a life which is beyond what they can imagine and brave to start what they believe like Bill Gates and Zach Zuckerberg of Facebook. A person can be something if he or she believes in it whether they are supported by their family or not. Do hard work labor made people rich? certainly not, think about the cleaners or street vendors, they are hard working too, but it needs not only education to improve ones status but one has to be smart to live life and of course as I have said "connections". A teacher whether he or she is dedicated in work does not mean they will be millionaires unless they have a business that booms that made them reach their status. You see, its not in just education that can make a person achieve something, sometimes it is also called "luck" and opportunity.

Talent is always appreciated. I would even say, some people are just priceless. No matter, how much they earn or have earned, they deserve more. It is true that many such people were hardly able to afford two meals a day. Some are just luckier than the others. Education is important and is given quite a high value in society. But it is something everybody who puts in some time and effort can do to a certain level and succeed. But world class sportsmen or entertainers like movie directors, actors, comedians, magicians are rare and deserve the special credit and hence the money. Of course, you can say that the profession you choose also plays an important part in determining how much you earn. 2 persons having the same talents and knowledge may earn very differently. One may have chosen to be a professor while the other one has become a researcher. More often than not, the researcher will earn more.

Hi. Yeah, that is so true. And also entertainers & athletes have sponsors for their clothes, accessories, car and even food. I think it's unfair specially for the teachers and social workers as well.

There is no doubt that the ratio of femous people to ordinaries is very low, and the gap between the rich and the poor can't and will not disappear. It's the thing that has destined. So famous people deserve high income.

Bernard shaw had correctly said -Twelve fools are playing and twelve thousand fools are seeing. It is a fool's paradise. I was a central Government officer who worked hard and worked very sincerely, but I was paid less. As long as fools are there, this type of situation will continue. i think that athletes donot deserve. sports is an unproductive exercise but education is more important and productive. But nobody will listen to our opinions.
