I went to a gas station a few days ago to refuel. I've notice this sign posted saying "turn off cellphone." What's the reason for this? Are cellphones capable of starting fire or whatever hazardous to a place where flammable substances are stored? Is this just nonsense or have a scientific basis?

Yes. Cell phones are capable of starting fires, by the means of static charges. Scientifically, static charges are nothing but charges, possessing characteristics of low electrical current flow. The other name for static charges is electrostatic discharge ( ESD ). When you make a call, or receive a call, you will encounter a slight increase in the temperature of the mobile phone you're using, which is caused by increase of electrostatic discharges. When you are filling up the gas tank, try to observe that there are fumes coming out from the filler, and not the pumping equipment. When such fumes interact with static charges produced by the phone, a fire could start. Well, the same concept goes on with why you have to turn off your car when filling, because vehicles produced much more static charges due to mechanical frictions.

Does this take a few seconds or minute? Actually, there are times that I use my phone while filling the tank.

Someone came up with the idea that a cellphone in use could create a spark and cause a gas station fire. TV's "Mythbusters" Show took the idea on as a challenge, and couldn't make it happen...Me,I'd be more concerned with somebody having a smoke nearby...

They said the radiation is capable of causing fire with all the gas and all. It's pretty shabby but I won't take any chances.
