Hi Skysuccess.Let me first tell you why we should have more fish in our diet.Fish besides being a rich source of proteins are also rich in omega 3.This particular fatty acid is a wonder molecule. It takes care of the body like no other nutrient does - lowers bad cholesterol(good cholesterol is needed by the body) and maintains a healthy heart , keeps eyesight good, maintains healthy skin and acts as antioxidant.too much of frying or cooking the fish destroys this wonder molecule so cook the fish lightly. But this molecule is also found in flax seed and nuts. other healthy tip is to include all colored fruits and vegetables in your diet.Red and orange color gives Beta carotene ( precursor of vitamin A), purple and red color food is rich in anthocyanin which has disease fighting properties (especially cancer) and are rich in selenium. One can include fiber rich food which helps in absorbing all the nutrients from the food one consumes.

pickwick, Just want to add that while I am agreeable with the nutritional values mentioned by you, I believe we need to be aware that only certain species have higher nutrients like Omega3 fatty acids which could only be found in Salmons, Trouts and Herrings. Generally, fish meat is protein rich compared to poultry and red meats. However, has lower cholesterol, zinc and iron than meats and poultry. Yet, vitamin B12 is same and if not higher than meats and poultry. In view of certain shortcomings, I believe we need to ingest other meats and poultry to make up the difference, which is why the relevant body is recommending moderation and balance here. Have a nice day.

Hiya sky, In about that order like you put we are eating mainly that in some proportion or another. Meat is being limited as it is very expensive now and fish is very expensive too so we opt for the Vegetables and Legumes as you call them. Beans and Lentils are used a lot here so really there is not much need for meat with them. Rice is something we a bit of but not too much now either and less of pasta than before but more salad. We are by no means perfect the way we eat but we do everything we can to stay away from packet food already made if we can. Good guidelines however for everyone wherever they are from.xxx

lovinangelsinstead21, I can understand that the prices for fish are never cheap and that is why my family would buy them from either the local wet market or seafood wholesale center than the supermarkets. For one, the fish we get from these places are usually cheaper and much fresh than what we can get from the supermarkets. I am glad that you are able to find a balance alternative. Though I must add that there are limitations for beans as people with gout will have a problem consuming them.

Hiya sky, Beans is a big main Dish in Spain too but the trouble is they mix it with Pork and its different kind of Meats like Salami, Pigs Pudding and Chorizo this makes for a very heavy Meal with the Beans together with it as well. Although its okay to eat it once every so often and not too much of it either. I never eat this now but it can smell really delicious and very appetizing when you are going past somewhere where they are cooking it. I have an aversion to most parts of Pork anyway so I eat very little if nothing of it at all. Even though Rabbit is another Dish they make a lot of I don´t relish the thought of even eating that not a meat I like at all. Favourite Fish is Sardines and Tuna Fish and Salmon if it is not pricey and that I would have to eat on my own as no one else likes it in this House (grin). Best of all I like Fish Pie as it goes down much better with me and there are no bones to find in it if I make it. xxx

Me again, What most of us are eating at the moment is something easy like a little meat but with lots of Salad and Watermelon and Sandia. We eat a lot of that here to get through the Day as its very hot and sticky most times and you need something that gives you good energy not something heavy that will weigh you down and make you feel sleepy. Spanish Omelette most of it is bought out of the Shops already made and I don´t blame them as it is too hot to be in the Kitchen. Who wants to slave away on Days like these?xxx

Thanks, sky, for this info. It appears that your gov't is kinda like ours when it comes to recommending nutrition. We say 9 servings of fruits and/or veggies daily, two serving whole grain and one of meat/protein. There is a very good book by a Cardiologist titled "The Forever Young diet" That puts this in common sense talk I think everyone should read. This book was written by a husband and wife team. He is a Cardiologist and she is a clinical dietitian.

Hi. That's a very good article. Thanks for sharing. I do love eating fish, chicken and vegetable. I noticed if I eat red meat my feet and even my knuckles hurt. The foods that you mention will certainly go on my diet.

I am more of a carnivore. I like to eat meat but only those lean parts. I take off the fat of a pork and i usually eat the lean beef meat. I am also fond of fish, but i would like to alternate my eating with fish and meat each day. That way, i don't get tired of each type and for variation. But i always make it a point that for every meal, i would have vegetables to go with the meat or fish. That way, i have fibers for my metabolism.

Thanks skysuccess for posting this article . Really very informative and helpful for health conscious people like us . It's good to take the egg white as often as it is rich in albumin(protein).Egg yolk(yellow) is high in cholesterol so I avoid it . Spinach is also good source of antioxidents , vitamins, minerals and also has lot of folic acid (source of iron).I take it very often .

It is hard to avoid those meat and foods as they are rich and main ingredients in Malaysian foods. Anyway I do like more fish than meat. It tastes better and I don't like fried foods. Just by looking at the fresh fried fries will make me surrender~(^^)
