Do you leave your seat for an old woman in a crowded bus?

I see many times an old woman or a school child is facing trouble standing in a crowded bus or train. They look helpless. Since I travel daily in those crowded buses, I am used to it. So, I stand everyday. but, there are some persons who just turn their back around them. They don't leave their seat. I think there should be a notice on the bus or train:
LEAVE THE SEAT FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST.
Do you think we are loosing our manners in this world?

Few years ago I had accident and I use walking stick. Many times I had to stood in the bus because no one wanted to stand up. The same with trains. I have no idea why people are so insensitive. When I was young I always left my place for older person. For me it was matter of good behaviour.

That is the case. When I was a kid, I have seen some people offering their seats. But now its very rare. Even I have seen people sitting in seats reserved for physically challenged people. Those peoples are so indecent that they don't offer their seat to senior citizens and say that you are not physically challenged. I feel very awkward and nobody protests. I feel like I am alone.

Yes i leave my seat for the person who need it most. I think you are right we are loosing our manners. I leave my seat because i felt that need and pain. Once i was travelling by bus and i was 8 months pergnant. I was very difficult for me to stand in the moving bus and journey was about 2 hours long. Nobody wanted to vacate a seat for me. Than an middle aged lady stood and vacate a seat for me because she felt the pain of me. ?I really thankful that lady even today who was so generous.

No you don't often see it go around twice unless it is by the friend of the first offerer for example her boyfriend or something. I think it feels good to help people and when you can give something like a seat that is free to you and there is someone more needy of it then it should just be common courtesy.

I always try to do that and have done it in the past but now a days I do not travel by bus very frequently. I do not remember when did I traveled by bus so there is no question of doing a favor to old women or men but I would be happy to do so.
Thanks for sharing.

I commend you for doing those there are not many men who are helpful and a real gentleman enough as you are. The breed of dying chivalry is sadly lost here in the metropolis than any place especially when you are taking the light rail transit or bus. Even If I am a woman I do offer my seat to an old lady, or pregnant woman. That's a good suggestion to post that notice on buses. Hopefully people will get the hint.

sometimes i leave my seats for the old ones but not for students as i am also a student and my college is 70 km away from my home and i dont think its a small distance for everyday, also bus takes near about 1 and half hour to reach college.and in evening after attending college for 8 hours i just sleep in the buses so at that time i dont know who is standing or not?

yes that is a point i am really finding in this discussion. Whatever you is justified. And people should not get angry with it,because you have to make a long distance journey, and no one can stand in bus for that long time.
I also used to travel almost 2 hours in train for my office. But i used to leave my seat after one hour and 20 min.and let the others sit.But i was shocked that only i was the one who used to do this.no body ever felt leaving their seat to others as they have already sat there for so long times.
and i also had to stand for 2hours in the crowded train if i failed have a seat reservation.

one more thing, saying is different thing and doing is different, many people here are saying they will thier seats but i dont agree with them,it totally depends on situation, for example assume you are travelling for a long distance in a train at night ,and dont have any reserved seat then i can bet no one is going to leave his/her seat for you,the real world is totally different from the world we thought.

Yes i do and i have seen people in this position before and offered my seat if someone else hasn't done it before me or i wasn't already standing. I think it is common courtesy and more people should posses this trait that are able. I don't think a child or old lady should even have to ask or anyone with a disability.

Yes that's true whoever is the most needful of it should be entitled to it young or old. I would probably give the little tacker my seat too. I don't mind standing while I'm able.

Not only old people, sometimes I saw a young lad or girl is struggling with a heavy bag. He can't carry it. If somebody takes his bag on his lap, then he can travel comfortably. Its not always the case of offering seat. Sometimes it is helping your co-passengers.

Unfortunately I think that good manners are lost. I am still in my little, if I can, I leave my seat for an elderly person.

Nice to hear that our values as human beings are still intact despite the increasing materialism of the world. Despite of being busy and complex the world is getting, we still maintain our values that defines who we are as a person, being humane, being kind to others.
Agree, in our own small way we will do our share in offering even a bit of signal that our positive traits are still alive.
Thanks for the short but appropriate post bro alberello.

debs90 i also leave my seat for the old person or the one who need the seat most. even some time i help some people to take their luggage inside the bus. But some time i get shocked at that, when i am carrying a heavy luggage and trying to take it inside the bus no ones helps me,and moreover they ADVICE me not to get in that bus and go away from their so that they can get in.
I am really annoyed with this behaviors.so now a days i don't leave the seats to them who don't know how to payback the manners. Like i always catch the bus at 6.30. One old man also catches it. Sometimes i used to leave the seat to him. But one day he behaved very strange and said so many things. From the next day i don't leave my seat to him.

I agree with you. People are losing their mannners. For some reason they only seem to be concerned with themselves and that is really sad. It would be nice for transportation as these to post signs like that. I wish more people felt the way you do. The world would be a lot nicer if others were more considerate and tried to help others. I'm happy you do this for others I would definitely do the same. It is very difficult for older ones to stand for a long period of time and I would gladly give up my seat for them. Even a small child I would do the same. It's sad that grown people who should be more mature don't give up their seat.

if it's in my own country i will leave my seat for senior citizen, but when i'm on other country, it would depend on the condition. There are country where senior citizen think that my race (asian) are lower than their race. This happen to my friend when he visited some country where he try to be nice to senior citizen in a public transport but what he get in return was a harsh racist comment and he explain to me that it's not a one time incident, he got treated that way many times by senior citizen, but young people in that country are better than the senior citizen when treating Foreigners.

If the senior citizen just don't wanna take our kindness that's OK with me, but if the senior citizen told me that because i'm not their race i should never use the public transport and i should walk instead i would be very offended.

Maybe we should assess first the person we are looking for, before we let our site be taken. But for me, if I have seen and old woman standing in the bus I will gladly offer my seat for him/her. That is way of saying a respect to old people. Lots of children now are very harsh to their grandparents, they can do whatever they want without knowing the needs of the older people.

hi:)
I'm a woman but I have no problem with that and I try to give up my seat as often as I can but sometimes, I don’t know why, I just get embarrassed to do so even though I know I shouldn't. perhaps because I'm waiting for the man to do it,or I suppose sometimes I fear that I may offend them so I feel awkward and get stuck for what to say when offering up my seat.because mostly I'm shy when I'm outside especially when I'm alone. but next time I will get over my fear and do the right thing.

It is quite common for me to give my seat to anybody who is in need of it in the bus. I have sit in the office all day long. So I don't mind standing in the bus. I can regard it as a kind of exercise. Besides, I feel unfortable if I keep a seat but the people who are in need of it are nearby.

In the busses in my country there are a couple of seats for elderly people or disabled people. There is a sign saying: "This seat is reserved for seniors or disabled people" If there are no seniors and no disabled people in the bus, other people are allowed to use the seats, but they have to leave the seats if a senior or a disabled person enters the bus. Sometimes young people don't leave the seats like they are supposed to and some of them are rude when a senior citizen or a disabled person asks them to leave seat. Personally I give up my seat if I see someone who needs it more than me. I am able to stand so there is no reason why I should should keep my seat if someone needs it more than me.

Yes,I can always offer my seat for an elderly.
I know some people and young ones just ignore the elderly and doesn't offer their seats, thu there are still good kids, few ones out there that are willing to offer their seats.
I can't bear watching an elderly standing in a bus.
have a good day

I'm a woman, and yes...I do give my seat whenever I see kids and senior citizens. It doesn't matter to me if they are male or female. It's just common courtesy...and the right thing to do.
