Hi lotters !
Here's what happened, while I was having a formal conversation my friends.
A lot is going on the radar, as our college is soon going to be visited by multinational firms for campus recruitment. Don't know when, the conversation turned into a discussion;
topic: "our conversation skills and English".
I mean a lot of my colleagues are really concerned about their conversations skills and specially, their English. Its really a time for some self assessment, some self introspection, on where we stand being judged on our verbal skills.
It really got me thinking, what have I learned and achieved during all my years in those missionary schools. I remembered the time I participated in those debates, group discussions and all sorts of competitions I used to take part in when I was a kid.
First thing which came to my mind was my writing skills. But this was not a concern, as it was a campus recruitment. Nobody s gonna ask me to write an essay..:p
Ok... So as far as writing was concerned, I felt.. aahh okkk..yeah, I can write some sensible stuff.
Then came my verbal skills. "Am I confident enough to speak in front of a packed hall ?" Well, I did secure 2nd position at a district level debate competition though. But that was five years back. And I have to brush my verbal skills all over again, since I haven't had a chance to utter even a single complete paragraph in English, except for a few technical seminars. This was something that needed attention. I remembered the time when I started imitating the foreign accent so as to make some extra impression and that, by default, became my style.
But wait a sec. Thats shouldn't be my concern now. The bigger problem wasn't "how" I will speak but "what" will I speak...:p
I remembered now that there was hell of a preparation needed regarding technical stuff than my English. I had to go through all basics concepts of C and C++ again. I had to revise all of my previous semester subjects that I hated so much and never bothered touching it again at any point in my life. It suddenly struck me that I haven't decided my major project yet.
My minor one was a total disaster and it ended up with me getting the lowest grades, cuz it was an FM transmitter which never transmitted a thing. It did transmitted my grades far away from me though...
Besides How much I try; even if I go upto the extent of completely filling my answer sheet, I never get good grades "Aaaaahhh.. this college... no this university.. no this "engineering: s**ks man!!!
... ... ... ...uummm.... Have I completed my industrial training report...??
Crap..!! The whole world turned upside down. It was like some meteor came falling from the sky and hit me right on my head.
Yes Mr. "I dont care"... now you do have a "lot" of things to take care of.
*clap..*
It was one of my friends snapping his fingers in front of my face, and then literally shaking me to wake me up. Then he said-
"Dude.. welcome back... so guyz... our beloved friend himzey's gonna give us a short seminar on how to face your first interveiw.."
"Interview ... what ??"
It was then I realized that the topic has already changed from English, to facing interviews..."
All my friends went lolz...
My friend went on further... "And before you start off, just a humble request "Sir".. English please.. as you know, we are trying to brush up our own skills.. By the way,..hows your English..??...."
Me- "... huh.. my English..?? aaah... I think .. its just ok.."
Some of you might have had some experiences of the same stuff. Go on share them.. We are all ears..

Hi himzey
My English too, I believe, is just ok! ;)
Something very similar happened with me. When the classes started after the long (and wasted) summer break, the first thing that seventy percent of my friends asked were "So did you join any placement training?"
And before I could go further than humming and hawing:
"You probably don't need it with your kind of English. But how will you practise Personal Interviews?"
It brought a faint sardonic smile, it did, because, even though we do need to frame beforehand, the answers to some classic-typical questions, I personally believe that no matter what, nobody should be spoon-feeding you answers to questions that are Personal!!
Aptitude coaching and group discussion conduct is acceptable, but guys, let your Personal Interviews have a personal touch to them!! How can a batch of thirty people have the same set of strengths and the same standard hobbies?
Putting myself in the recruiter's shoes, I wonder if I would select a candidate who seems to have memorised standard answers to questions... Just a thought!
PS: I remember a moment in the interview, I answered back to a statement. I thought it had been snappy but it came out with a perfect tone and that's what totally set me apart in their eyes. You should have seen both their faces at that instant. AWED!! :D
Will tell you sometime ;)

Livemocha is a great place to brush up or practice nay language. There are thousand of native English speakers eager to assess your English.
I think the biggest problem with foreigner who speak English is the intonation. I'm an ESL teacher and I think that is where the problem with foreigners.
Try to find some friends who are native speakers and practice speaking with them at least one hour.

I did had a few interactive conversations with some friends from Canada and SA but that was a long time ago. When I asked if they are getting what I am saying, they said my English was good.
