Our rabbit Sam eats banana peelings...

Sam sort of changes his diet every now and then. I guess that's because of food availability and what we feed him. We usually feed him camote tops and he really loves it! From stem to leaves, he eats them all. I'm happy that rabbits love vegetables. But I'm surprised he doesn't like carrots much.
And it surprised me, too when I learned that he eats banana peelings! My cousin just told me about it when he saw me threw away the skin of a banana I ate. So I picked up the banana peeling and gave it to Sam and he immediately munched it until the tiniest bit!
Now, if we don't camote tops, I'll just eat a banana and give the peelings to Sam.

I used to raise rabbits for pets. Be very careful what you are feeding your pet because their digestive tract is really kind of tricky.
I gave my rabbits a very small piece of banana (not peels) 2 times a week as a treat.
While most rabbits do enjoy banana (or peels), they are very high in sugar/carbs and really are not good choices for them to eat. Further, because they tend to be sticky, this can also cause tooth decay problems in rabbits.
If your rabbit is very active and gets a lot of exercises, perhaps a small piece a few times a week would be okay. Definitely not very much of it.
I could go into everything I had to learn to care for bunnies but one of the sites I used to make sure I was doing the best for my pet was
http://www.petfinder.com/pet-care/care-domestic-rabbits.html
Love your pet and make sure food, water, and treats are given right.

Hi marie! Thank you so much for the tips! This is my first time to take care of a rabbit and I really don't have any idea. Sam isn't really mine but I'm taking care of him because my 6-year old nephew is useless with that . Well, I think Sam has gotten tired of eating banana peels by now. He's ignoring the peel I was giving him last night. He's back with camote tops.

I don't know if the pellets sold in pet shops are hay pellets. But aren't vegetables enough to make a rabbit healthy?

In the wild bunnies would get enough of the right stuff to eat because they would be looking for it.
Through cartoons etc, seeing pictures of bunnies posed with a head of cabbage, we assume these are the things bunnies eat.
But they have a very delicate digestive system. they have to have some type of hay to chew on as it aids in their digestion.
Your rabbit's diet is very crucial to the longevity of their health. It is absolutely necessary to feed your rabbit with fresh water and Timothy Hay, not alfalfa. Alfalfa is okay to give to young baby rabbits, but only for a very short time because it contains such a high concentrate of calcium. Too much calcium thickens a rabbit's urine and causes bladder infections, kidney stones, and other urinary tract infections. So, Timothy Hay is the way to go and should be available at any pet store,The next thing to put on your bunny grocery list are pellets. I can give you a few suggestions, but it is also up to you to read the packaging and make sure you're not buying "candy" pellet food.
So pellets and hay are the basics. Now, anytime you introduce your rabbit with other foods like carrots, apples, lettuce, and bananas, please keep in mind that a rabbit's stomach is very delicate. Having sporadic new foods is not a healthy meal unless you introduce it to your rabbit slowly, regularly, and with very small portions for starters.
Make sure not to over or under feed your bunny, however it is fine to replenish the hay tray regularly. I cannot stress enough that hay is a necessity in a rabbit's life. Rabbits are constantly grooming themselves and since they do not cough up their fur like cats do, it is imperative that they have hay to help push the hair through the digestive tract.
Hope this helps with the diet for a bunny.

Hi drannhh!!! Yeah! Rabbits are so adorable! But as much as I want to cuddle Sam, he is so aloof. He doesn't want to be carried. How do you use banana peels on your skin?

haha, really? HE's such a weird rabbit that doesn't eat carrots, secret!! Will he be able to see clearly at night when carrots are supposed to be good for eye sight? hehe PLus, banana peelings can be eaten? Nobody eats that, even though monkeys loves bananas as well I guess it's just a nice taste for Sam, and he will change his diet soon again, when he gets stomach upset with too much fiber.. hehe

hi,
We do have a pair of rabbits Chinku & Minku. you know we give them almost all cooked food too, what we normally eat!! My friend was telling they develop their habit of eating as we feed them. I often bring some fresh grass cutting from here and there wash them with plain water and feed them. you should look at the way they eat them!! I love to watch them jumping around when they see the fresh grass!!!!!!!

Hi veensm!!! I like the names of your rabbits! Chinku and Minku sound really cute!!! If I was the real owner of Sam, I would have named him differently. He's really my nephew's rabbit and his mother gave the name Sam. No creativity, right?
I have not tried giving Sam grass but I will do! I like to see him eat, too. Looks really funny and cute.

I think that having a rabbit is a great way to reduce organic waste! I have two black lop bunnies called Brooklyn and Cruz (I didn't name them, I adopted them and they were already named as Victoria Beckham's kids), and like yours they don't like carrots much, I think that is just a myth, I mean, they will eat it, because it's a vegetable, but they prefer other meals like for example fruits, because they have more sugar and taste better. Mine also love bananas, and they eat them with peelings and all, and of course when I eat one, I give them the peelings, so I help reducing waste and that's good for the environment.

Lop bunnies! Those are bunnies with long ears, right? I think they're cute! And I think the names are cute, too.
Yeah, I guess you can say that. They can really help reduce organic waste. Today, I found some old Chinese cabbage in our fridge which my mother had forgotten and instead of throwing it away, I gave it to Sam and he eagerly ate them.

Hi secretbear, rabbits belong to the family of plant eating animals and their staple of course are vegetables especially the typical one, carrot. We have learned this since our childhood from people close to us or from children books and cartoons. And therefore I have the wrong concept that rabbits eat carrot only
I did keep rabbits as pet before and they loved all kind of veggies including carrots. but I never tried to feed them camote tops and banana peels. Nice to know that your lovely Sam eats banana skins so bananas will be fully used
Happy posting and have a nice day!

Hi Ikbooi! I only learned that rabbits love carrots because of Bugs Bunny. I guess that could be true with some species of rabbit only.

my wife wants to get a rabbit too. she said there are plenty of leaves he can eat at her very small yard and some grass too. i also heard that rabbits does not enjoy eating carrots specially when they are young. i guess carrots are a little bit hard for their tiny teeth. i guess rabbits are like goats, that eats almost anything they can lay their teeth with but i wanted to have dog rather than rabbit. but as of now we are not deciding yet. but happy to hear that you can share food with your pet

Oh no, rabbits do not eat anything that they can lay their teeth on. But they do eat different kinds of vegetables. I have given Sam lettuce, cabbage, parsley aside from camote tops. But there are times when he gets tired of eating the same thing over and over again. I'm not sure if he will eat grass or leaves but I tried giving him papaya leaves and he couldn't eat a whole leaf.

hello secret,
I guess it's just a myth that rabbit loves carrots.
Same thing with mouse that loves cheese -it's not also true.
Rabbits loves vegetables that's what I really know because we have a neighbor and they have rabbits and feed those cute animals with vegetables of different kinds.
have a good day

My boyfriend's rabbit eats my cats food! Even when she's got lettuce & carrots of her own! its funny! My cat is very passive aggressive, he pats his tail against the ground like a person tapping their foot impatiently! its so cute! hehehe
I have no idea how to deter the rabbit from my cat's food, so I just watch & smile.

Cat food?? Well, that's strange! Oh, I once tried to give turtle pellets to Sam, because we have a little turtle, too. And Sam ate it!

Oh Sam is must be a really healthy rabbit. Banana peeling is very nutritious I heard. Some would pound it and make this some sort of little cake and fry them. Just keep it up. It's good that nothing is wasted out of your eating the banana.

Hi thetis! Sam has a healthy diet indeed. But he lacks exercise. He's always in his cage. He can only leave his cage when I let him and that's only during the weekend. During weekdays, there's no one patient enough to watch him while he play outside his cage.

Dear secretbear,
That is really interesting! I normally saw people feed rabbit with
vegetables. I normally feed them with vegetables that we bought
from the counter at the 'petting zoo' to feed the rabbits. My son
love to see rabbit, fish and many more other animals :)

Children should be like rabbits who loves vegetables. And even those adults who don't like vegetables.
