Did you hear about the man who was attacked by a shark on his honeymoon?

This British man and his wife were on their honeymoon. He was savagely attacked by a shark and died from his injuries. When I heard about this I literally felt aweful. I felt so bad for the man himself, his wife and his family. I couldn't even imagine how horrible it would be to experience being on my honeymoon and losing my husband in that way. It was such a tragedy. The poor man and all that he went through, absolutely horrible. I know shark talks don't have often but for me personally it happens enough to keep me out of the ocean. My husband said that of course they are trying to find this shark but we were wondering does anybody know how they will be able to do this? Besides just killing sharks and opening them up? Is there some type of technology that allows them to be able to identify the shark?

I did not hear about it until now, but it is very sad. I read the article that MysD linked to, and it sounds like it could have been prevented if the area had publicized the shark attack two weeks prior to this one as people would have been more aware and vigilant. The fact that they still insisted that there were no sharks in the water after that attack not to mention another sighting of a Tiger shark by someone else makes it more than tragic ... it means that they were intentionally giving people the wrong information, which could possibly be criminal, although I do not know the laws of that area.

You have clearly stated the difference here - taking an informed risk versus unknowingly putting yourself in danger. If the man had known that there were sharks in the waters and chosen to go for a swim anyway, which you are right in that some people choose to do this sort of thing even knowing the risks, then it would be sad but not as tragic, in my opinion. The fact that he did not know what he was doing was dangerous, in fact he was assured that it was perfectly safe, is what makes it so tragic and absolutely avoidable.

I do think if it were publicized it might have helped. It was a very tragic thing. I think though that even when things like this are publicized there are still those individuals who go out into the water anyway. Unfortunately though this man didn't get the opportunity to make the decision to not go out into the water because he wasn't aware that there had been an attack in the area.

Yeah i can't even begin to imagine his wife's pain and heartache. To go their with your husband as his wife and then to have to leave as a widow. It would be so painful and shocking.

This is such a sad ending to what was supposed to be a happy life together. I heard about this story this morning on the Today show. They also said that there was a shark attack on a French man two weeks ago in the same area about 40 yards away (I think that was the length, but don't quote me on it). Needless to say, it was within the same vecinity. The Seyelles(spelling?) government kept that first attack hush, hush. I could not imagine having to listen to my husband screaming, but being helpless and unable to rescue him. My heart goes out to this family, especially the wife.

It would be aweful to watch and see this happen. It would be sad to see it happen to a complete stranger it would be heartrenching to see it happen to our family member. Knowing that there isn't much we can do that would be fast enough to help.

i have not heard this on the news. thank you for sharing this information with us. that is really really sad for the wife. she wasnot able to spend a long time with her new husband. i hope that accidents like thiswill not happen again if only we put nets to separate those sharks from seas that we can swim in.

It was a tragic thing that happened. I think that they should make a net to put out in places like this that the sharks won't get caught in. This could perhaps prevent a lot of shark attacks.

hi:)
yes I do and I think it's horrible and I feel sad for the family especially for the wife, because it's supposed to be their honeymoon but that tragic accident happened, I just can't imagine how she felt, this is really shocking, and about the shark I think that's impossible to locate anymore, and even if they do, what for right?

It really was such a horrible thing to happen to this couple or anyone for that matter. I do think that it would be hard for them to locate this shark. I'm not sure at all how they will be able to do this. And like you said what for. I think that they will try to kill it if they are able to find it, and search through it to see if it was the one who attacked two people. It's a sad thing all around because after all it is us as humans who decide to swim in their territory.

I too wonder how they will find the shark. I hope that they are able to find him. It is sad that they will probably kill it because after all sharks are in their environment it is people who decide to swim there. It's just a horrible situation all around.

Thats just terrible! I am afraid to swim in the ocean for that very reason. I went to Virginia Beach on my honey moon and was walking in the water that wasb splashing up onto the shore and a tiny fish hit my foot, I freaked!! It was dark and I only saw a small glimpse of it. But I screamed and got right out of the water!! I felt silly but hey it was new to me walking in the ocean. I am afraid of jelly fish too. Its all a shame tho since I am a huge water lover. I am a water sign and just cant get enough swimming in (safe waters).
The other thing about finding this shark. I have no idea unless it had some distinguished marks.Or if there is another shark going around attacking people. They might catch it then. Maybe the comment was implied for sympathy to the people in his family to give them some hope of closure.

I too am afraid to swim in the ocean. I have never swimmed in the ocean and don't plan to for this particular reason: shark attacks. I know it doesn't happen to often but happens enough for me to stay out of the water. The article mentioned that there was a shark attack a few weeks earlier in the same area so i they think it is the same one and hopefully they were able to find it. I think though it's sad to have to kill it because it's just in it's home, doing what it does-looking for food. That's why I respect them and don't swim in the ocean.

Yes it is a very tragic thing. Life is so precious and dear that when we hear such things it reminds how we shouldn't take our life for granted. Things can happen and our life can be gone in the blink of an eye.

It seems that not everyone is aware of this horrible news so here is a link:

I fear that the particular shark will strike again unless it is tracked down and killed. I hope that the people in the area where it happened will be careful and take all the necessary precautions when swimming in the sea where it happened

I too hope that they were able to catch this shark. It was a very tragic thing. And if he has attacked the two people that were in that area within that time frame he needs to be caught. I feel for the family in this tragic loss.

Yeah it's very scary. It's sad that these things happen. But for me personally I've always thought that it's a risk I'm not willing to take. I have a great deal of respect for sharks and when we swim in the ocean we are in their territory. And not that they seek humans out but it's often been said that they think humans are seals.

It really is a tragic thing. I can't even begin to imagine the pain she is going through. Words wouldn't even come close to describing it. Yeah the last shark attack was a long time ago. It is so sad that this happened to him.
