i have always been intrigued about the reduced foods in tesco and sainsbury. i am sure everyone who have been in UK knows about this.
well, they reduced foods that are going to expire during that day. sometimes they reduced the ones that will expire the day after or two days after.
i always wonder if it is safe to eat these foods if the day extended one more because usually they reduce late at night.
let's say. i buy cheese at 9pm today. the expiration date is today. i want to use it tomorrow. is it safe to use it?

I hunt for reduced food and often eat it well beyond the expiry date with no bad effect

I had it explained to me once by someone who works at a head office of a large supermarket chain. They said that the expiry dates on most foods are usually a day or two before the food will go off - but it depends on the quality of the supermarket... for example...
(I am talking about how they mark up their own brands here)
If you get something from Somerfield you usually have 1 day over the use by date to consume the food.
If you get something from Tesco/Asda etc you usually can allow 2 days
M&S however are by far the best and I have been told you can reasonably be able to eat the foods up to 3 days after the use by date. M&S don't have bargain counters though - but it is still handy to know...
A lot of the time you can just use your judgement - because something like cheese can be ok for a week after sell by dates as long as it has not been opened.

No probs.
To be honest I think sell by dates and use by dates are so misleading - think about the amount of times you've wandered down the meat aisle and see stuff that surely should be thrown out but stil has a couple of days on it. I have seen curly bacon and brown steaks before! Yuck - no one is going to buy that are they!?! even if it says it's ok - you just know it's not!

You may have heard of the movement called "Freeganism" where people go dumpster diving outside supermarkets to salvage viable foodstuffs that are still perfectly edible,it's just the label says their shelf life is up..Only fresh foods and dairy produce would be very time critical..anything with preservatives added should still be safe on expiry day! Cheese would be one of our ways of preserving milk produce..as long as there was no mould evident (assuming it's not blue cheese!)It'd still be good next day, especially if your plan was to use it on that day..
