I Hope This Bread Tastes As Good As It Looks!

As promised I've finally got round to baking my own bread, using a recipe I found on the internet (if you want it please let me know and I shall PM it to you) and I'm amazed how easy it was from start to finish.
As you can see from the photograph it's risen majestically and smells divine. Bog-standard butter and jam won't do this loaf justice, I'm sure. I'd love to use some ace ham and salad to make a butty but I haven't got any!
Anyway, I'm sure I'll think of something but for now just imagine the smell wafting through the house. Does wonders for your hunger pangs!
I doubt very much we shall ever have any Warburtons loaves in here ever again..provided mine is edible of course!
Do you make your own bread? I didn't need a breadmaking machine for the recipe I used as I don't possess one. Do you use one or do you prefer to knead the dough yourself? Mine only needed 5 minutes kneading time!

I have a bread machine, but darn if those darned cats won't let me use it! For all the counter space I have, I don't have much I can actually use, and anything on the counters is fair game to the cats and their spraying!
Right now I won't heat up the house by using the oven, it's too darned HOT!

Lovely!

Only 5 minutes kneading? That's impressive! I would love to see your recipe if you don't mind PMing it please.
I don't make bread at the moment, although I ought. I used to do it regularly when I had a bread machine, but now i haven't got enough electricity to use it and I have got lazy.
There is nothing on earth like the smell of fresh bread, and i'm astonished that you have managed to sit at the computer and type this whilst there is still some in the house needing eating

UPDATE: Tonight I made loaf of bread no.2 and it's better than the first one! Reason? I didn't place it in a bag, just the airing-cupboard uncovered. I reckon that was the reason it rose too much last time.

Now that looks like a fantastic effort. Well done. I used to make a lot of bread but I don't really eat it these days as it bloats me, but that doesn't mean that I don't swoon at the sight, smell and merest thought of a good home made loaf. You'll be on the "Great British Bake Off" soon !!

Well, it certainly makes a change from what I used to cook, that's for sure.
Thinking about the expense of all this cooking now, though.

That does look like a professional and delicious loaf of bread! Well Done!
How about the smell throughout the house of bread that is baking. Isn't it great!
I do make my own bread and without a bread making machine but it is nothing like that. It does not rise and is not all light and fluffy like yours is, but I do not mind that. The reason being is that mine has no ingredients other than organic wheat. Soaked and sprouted for a couple of days, then cooked on a low temperature just like traditional breads used to be. The only difference is that I put the wheat through the juicer instead of mashing it in a mortar and pestle like they did way back when!
Sprouting the grain also converts the gluten in the wheat into carbohydrates I think from memory. It is the only bread I eat usually and is awesome with a thick layer of avocado and tomato on it!

The recipe is easy!
Step 1 - Buy organic wheat! Demeter Farms have good wheat.
Step 2 - Take 3 to 4 cups of wheat and soak it in water for the best part of a day.
Step 3 - Put the wheat into a sprouting bag in a colander, rinse and store in a dark cupboard for another day or two until wheat sprouts. Sprouting time will vary depending on conditions. (Don't let the sprouts get much longer than the grain or it will start to taste like wheat grass)
Step 4 - Run the wheat through a juicer with a blank screen so that the dough comes out the end where the pulp normally does. (If you do not have a juicer, then the traditional method with a mortar and pestle will do.)
Step 5 - Put it in a loaf shaped cake tin (Greased or with baking paper for non stick) and bang it in the oven on 120c to 150c for about 5 hours. To keep it technically raw, it can go in a dehydrator for around 24 hours too at 41c.
Step 6 - Eat and enjoy!

Is that it? Well bugger it, I'm going to give it a go! I'll go the mortar & pestle plus dehydrator route & make myself feel like a real raw foodie! I just bought some proper organic sprouting wheat too! I'll need to get a sprouting bag too - or maybe a pair of organic socks from Target will do? Got any more good recipes like this?

I was born and bred in China, therefore I don't get used to western-style food to be honest. However sometimes their color really arouses my appetite.

Awww! Well, Chinese food is alien to me but I might try to make some in future, as it all goes into one pan..something that appeals to me, trying to save money on fuel bills.

I like to use a bread machine, as it turns out lighter and more consistent for me, and I do not get all the flour all over the place then. It is nice to be busy doing something and find that you can also end up with a loaf to pop in the oven. I do not like to bake in the machine. Enjoy your bread, it will make everything served with it taste heavenly.

It's true! For some reason, I disliked baking with my bread machine in the beginning as well. It just gave it this funny consistency that made me skeptical.
Baking and cooking your own foods always makes it taste 10 times better than store bought ones! It's the delicious flavor + the amount of time and hard work you spent on it, so it's delicious + pride! I hope you enjoy your bread.

Oh, I love homemade bread, it is the best..I used to make it by hand, but I don't have the time or energy anymore, so I have this bread machine I got from a garage sale and when I went to make some bread last night, I couldn't find the machine..I had placed it on my sewing table and items were in front of it, by the time it was located it was too late..So next Friday I will make some..:D

Good for you. When you finally get to use your bread machine again please let me know how you got on, as I'm intrigued by certain gadgets, bread machines being one of them.

That turned out great!
I baked my bread for the first time two days ago and the crust turned out to be hard as stone. I found out that it was due to the temperature being too high. So I set it again, make sure it was lower and voila! My bread was perfect!
I don't have a loaf pan, so I just shaped it round My daughter loves chocolate, so I filled the buns with it and she loves it
Oh, please kindly drop the the recipe on my private message box!
Cheers!

I am a big fan of breads, and anything baked, and I'm so disappointed that my computer does not come with 'smell-a-vision'! I would have loved to smell this bread.
Anyway, I don't bake breads. I prefer to express my appreciation for them by smelling them before I devour them (warm breads of course!).

Believe me, it smells very good, even the last dregs in the bread-bin. At least there hasn't been any waste with it. Eight slices max with this loaf and that's all we need really. I might make another one later if I'm in the mood.

Never ever tried other breads but willing to try them out some day. % minutes kneading?? That is great!!(^^) It don't require much ingredients huh?? Could you please send me the recipe?? I will add you in my friend list and please accept my friend's request!

I haven't bake a bread ever since, only cakes and pastries. But I would love to try to bake my own bread someday, if we get a chance to buy our own oven here at our new place. As of now I can't bake any yet since we don't have a oven here at home. I admire you for baking you own bread and it looks like very delicious.

To be honest, I won't be able to bake bread all the time due to the expense (especially fuel prices i.e. gas and electric) but it will be nice to bake one for a change from time-to-time.

I have 2 bread makers and use them when I'm in a hurry to make bread. They can knead some bread better and faster, then me, so I use them to speed up bread making. I prefer to bake bread in my oven, as it makes a loaf that is a better shape.

Hi Janey, Because I have a problem metabolising sugar, we make our own sugar-yeast free bread. It is made with bicarbonate of soda and sometimes we add yoghurt which gives it a slighly different texture. At first the bread tasted a bit bland, but I perservered with it, and now much prefer it to other bread. I guess you can adapt to a taste that way. _Derek

Oh, yes, I can smell it in my mind's eye! Incredible. I haven't made yeast bread or rolls in a while due to time constraints. I never have used a bread machine, preferring the "joys" and "exercise" of kneading instead.
I do make many other breads in the "quick or batter bread" category. That's because they ARE quick and easy to throw together. But, there is nothing so fine as that wafting yeast bread smell!

Wow it does look very yummy. No I have never made my own bread and do not have a bread maker. It is on my wishlist someday. lol

Thank you and it does taste very good, fortunately! It was the texture that I was impressed with, not like the rubbery stuff from the shops.
I do need a bigger loaf tin though!

It looks great, I'll bet it smelled great when it was baking & if it tastes great, then that's a bonus & would top it all off nicely! What you've also got to bear in mind is that it's much, much better for you than the store-bought stuff. So even if it doesn't go down that well, in the unlikely event of a worst case scenario, at least it won't be doing you as much harm as the usual stuff!
I can remember back when I was a kid & mum spent all day making bread. By golly it smelled good all day! I'd help grind the flour from bio-dynamic, organic whole grain that morning - best if done by hand. Then she had some sort of secret recipe that's still a secret & she has actually taken it to the grave with her! Anyway, we'd watch it rise & rise for hours & you couldn't just nick a bit for a taste test because everyone would know & it would ruin the lot! It would go in our big old wood oven & be turned around every now & again for even heating, because there was a hole in the back of it (I told you it was old!). It came out nice & naturally, evenly brown in colour & there's nothing like eating warm bread straight from the oven! We always ate the crusts... will you be eating yours?
I reckon you should put it in the Royal Show!
I'm allergic to gluten now & have been since childhood, but I hear you can actually soak the flour for seven hours at room temperature, maybe with a few tablespoons of lemon juice added & the resulting bread will go down just fine!

Oh my, your childhood sounds like an episode of "The Waltons!" That's being nice by the way.
Actually, we DID eat the crusts. Absolutely awesome, no waste at all!
