We all have different coping mechanisms when we are depressed.
When I'm depressed, I usually eat sweet foods. I usually eat ice cream and shakes. I also eat more quantities of other foods. They can calm me down and I'll be better after that indulgence.
Mylotters, what do you do when you're depressed?

I remember the time when I was depressed. Most of the things that depressed me was my experienced in life and my mistakes. And when I feel depressed I just lay down and think for a while what should be the better things to do. I also ask my friends to meet with me to chill out.

Angel, I think that's one of the best things you can do. If I were depressed, I would try to think about other things. I try to tell myself that things could be worse, and I could be in a horrible situation than what I'm in now. Things could always be worse, so we must be thankful for what we have.

That surely will do good. I also eat a lot because I don't want to think about what happened. But at the end of the day before I go to sleep, I have all the time to think about it. Well, at least you're facing the situation. You are a fighter while I am more of the escaper.

I usually listen to my fave music when I am in a depressed mode. Music can calm me down. But speaking of ice cream I usually grab one if I am very hungry, tired and when the climate is so hot. Yes, I fell relieve after have one cup or cone of ice cream especially on a hot summer day.

Oh, music. I like to listen to music all the time and not necessarily when I'm depressed. Sometimes, songs can affect our mood right? So, do you prefer listening to the lively ones? Because in my case, I think I will only be magnifying my depression by listening to "emo" songs.

Hi JJ4Ever! I do eat chocolates before taking exams. I feel like I become calmer, because I really get shaky and nervous sometimes when I take examinations. I think its a psychological effect on my part. And I like the effect.

I like eating, too. I just eat "abnormally" large portions of food when I am depressed. And if I eat a lot on normal days, I'm afraid that I'll grow bigger, or should I say, fatter.

Depression reacts differently for some people. Where there are those that can find comfort in food and or sweets, while with others they loose their appetites. I am one of the ones that quickly looses interest in food and or any treat when undergoing feelings of depression.
I usually like to listen to music and or sleep for a bit to get my mind off my ever so thinking brain.

HWG, I have the same reactions when I'm depressed. I don't eat and don't want to eat when I'm in a deep depression. I don't have much weight that I can afford to lose, so when I feel this way, it's dangerous...I lose weight, like ten pounds in a week, and it's really bad. So I just try not to get depressed.

Ten pounds? My, that's like, a huge amount? You shouldn't be depressed ever or you would be thin as a stick.

Oh, good for you. I wish to lose my appetite too when I'm depressed, so I won't have to worry about gaining weight, because surely, that would be the cause of my next depression. .

Eating a lot then sleeping might not be the best combination, but if that works to keep you happy, then that's a good thing. I had a friend from college who became very lazy because when she got stressed, she would go to sleep. She would skip class because she wanted to sleep so bad. It got to where she pretty much withdrew herself from the world and didn't want to eat or be around people. She wasn't really sick or anything, she was just a little messed up in that she thought sleeping would solve all her problems. It was probably some disorder, but she really needed to get help. In her case, sleeping was the worse thing she could do. She ended up failing her sophomore year of college and dropped out because she slept too much. Because she slept so much, that actually caused her to become depressed. Don't let that happen to you!

Hello there vdollie! I usually go to sleep after eating. When I'm full, I tend to fall asleep.
Maybe I'll try to sleep some other time, rather than eating. That way, I won't get fat and I won't be guilty that I've eaten lot.

when i'm depressed, all I wanted to do is to cry..It makes me feel comfortable when all my emotions burst into tears..and when I got tired of crying, I go for shopping. that makes me feel revitalized again :)

I do cry when I'm angry too, but I rarely do when I'm depressed. I can't control the sudden burst of my emotions when I'm really angry. I can't direct it to the person so I'm the one who suffers. I find it hard to breathe and I shake all over.

Your emotional dear. But if that makes you feel better then you should do that if you are depressed. I sometimes hold back my tears when I'm really down, though I know that in some way, it will make me feel better.

I sure hope you're feeling better soon, my friend. I'm not depressed often because I have so much to do in a day, that I don't have time to be bored, depressed, or feel sorry for myself, so I think that is a blessed in disguise! Of course, if you're overworked and way too stressed, depression absolutely can set in. When I'm depressed, I really try to think of others. There are some shows I enjoy when I'm depressed because they lift my spirits, one of which is Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I love watching the dream team go in and transform someone's life by redoing their home. I like seeing the people smile when they see their new place. Another show I really enjoy while it was on the air is Secret Millionaire. These millionaires and billionaires would go to these poor and bad parts of town and join a few charities for a week. They would put in a lot of hours just helping people. At the end of the week, the millionaires and billionaires would announce that they were actually really successful business people and then donate thousands of dollars to the charities. Everyone was always floored by the money and thoughtfulness of these rich people who spent their time helping others. I think that's the best cure for depression; focusing on others instead of whatever you are going through that's getting you down. Aside from watching these two shows I mentioned, but best thing would be for me to help others, and when those opportunities, I'm blessed to be a part of them. I hope that gives you some great ideas, my friend. Take care!

Yes, I tend to watch a few hours of TV at night. My husband and I both work full time, so that's our way of relaxing at the end of the day, and we don't have kids yet, so we just sit around at night most of the time. If I didn't relax like that, I'd probably be stressed and depressed to! There's always something to do it seems like, however. If I'm really mad or stressed out, though, I've found that's the best time to clean the house lol! I know it sounds so weird, but that's a time when I can take all my frustration and tension out on the germs and dirt in the house. It ends up looking spotless when I'm done, and I love that I can use that to work to my benefit. I'm usually stress- and anger-free, and the house looks nice again! When these times come in our lives, each person has to figure out what works best for them.

I don't think i over eat but then again i am troubled alot of the time and i consider myself overweight, or atleast above average weight range for the other women my age.
I think it's important to find something that will make you smile, a joke a face an activity. Never let depression overcome your every thought and learn that life is what we make it and we should live to prove this to ourselves and loved ones each day.

Hi there mabel! When I was still a teenager I used to seek for the presence of my friends whenever I am depressed. I voiced out my problems to them and they gave me their opinions and advises. That way my depression was lessened. But now that I am in my womanhood, I read the bible when I am depress. Whenever I feel sad, lonely and worried I turn to God. I guess God speaks to us through the bible or by simply uttering a simple prayer. God makes me calm, relax and enlightened. Whenever you feel depress why not try it too? Thanks!

I have a friend who likes reading the bible, too. Sometimes, she tells me interesting stories in the bible. She even tells me how the bible enlightened her just like you. Maybe I can talk to her and seek for her advice the next time I am depressed.

I have different reactions to depression. There are instances that I just cry. Sometimes I binge out on chocolates and yes even ice cream or pizza. Food has a calming effect on me. Experts say view food as something that comforts us because it can be trace to the events while we were still a child. Our parents try to comfort us by letting us eat our favorite food. Sometimes I do not eat at all. I sort of deprive myself of food.
