Pretend you're in a classroom and the teacher's stepped out for a bit. One of the kids in your class accidentally drops and breaks the teacher's cup. When the teacher comes back, are you the one to keep quiet with everyone else about who did it, or will you tell the teacher who did it? Have you ever gone against the group and did the right thing like that? What was it like?

When I was still a student, I am the one who is just quiet and I don't deal with other's business. In that situation, I would rather just shut up and wait for someone to tell the truth. If in case no one talks, I will confront my teacher after the class to tell her the truth. When I was still studying, I used to be a secret agent on the class. During the class, I would look if there is someone copying or cheating on the exams, I would tell the teacher after who did it. I don't have a lot of friends and they think I am a teacher's pet. I don't think that it was not bad to be against the group. I was studying till morning and people who just cheat don't deserve a grade better than what I will get.

Interesting post, always love the hypothetical ones! To answer your question in a broader sense, I'd always stand up for my ideals although I'm more of a traditionalist than an iconoclast. This is because when you strongly believe in something, it gives you an added inner strength which propels you to take on those in the wrong even when they have the majority. Having said that, if the matter at hand is not quite in conflict with my core value system, I'd be content to give it a miss rather than create a scene to earn some plaudits. I have gone against the tide a few times in my life, in the sense which you have described - the one I am proudest of being when I refused to pay a bribe to obtain a driver's licence when I could easily have gotten it through an agent who had contacts within the government office concerned. Corruption is endemic in India and it is common here for the common man to grease several palms to ease through (or bypass) his transactions with the government - so I do say I went against "the group", so to speak, to get things done the hard way.

As a child, sadly I was one of those that would tell the teacher. Sorry but can't see me getting into trouble because a "group" decides to keep it silent then everyone gets in trouble.

i think accidently breaking a teacher's cup is not that big of a deal, so i think i wouldn't say anything to the teacher, it's up to the person who break it weather he/she will be honest to the teacher or not. If someone is cheating on test i wouldn't do anything too, because if you cheat your test, it only hurt yourself in the future where the knowledge you should know needed to be applied in real life. But... if someone being bullied by someone else and i know about this, i absolutely will tell the teacher about the bullying incident

I see, so it would depend on the situation.

I can't tolerate such activity. To be honest I will tell the teacher about what happend when you left the class they are trying you make fool. This response is not for the sake of being good in mylot. I will them to think what will happen if it is happen to you. Those students think they are doing a big thing and impress others and sometimes they will get followers but actually they are impress God.

Back when I was likely to be in a classroom I imagine I'd have held my peace, particularly if it were an accident and a relatively insignificant item like a mug.

Hi Lore.I am a teacher and if this sort of incidence happens in my class i would really appreciate that they remain united and never tell me who did it.(though they will because they know I will try to cover up any such incident. So naturally if I am a student too I would be loyal to my friends.I have never gone against a group when I was at school. But at work place I do sometimes have difference of opinion and think differently from my co workers. But then too I never go against them.

Ok this is the way I would play this one out. I would not voluntary who did it. However, if the teacher asked me directly then I would have to tell. At least that is the way I would have been back in the day in school. I was especially in grade and intermediate school scared of everything and everyone. However, it was in high school that I got brave and would speak up. Like I said though if the teacher asked to my face I would have to say who did it.
