Slacking off at work

I responded to a recent discussion where someone had posted statistics on the biggest culprits for lost productivity at work..(I think the original poster was quoting an Indian Article on a US Study..) Something like 44% was quoted as being the top stat, being the unproductive time spent surfing the net, with various other lesser contributors including running errands, jobhunting, personal phone calls,etc..I pointed out sleeping on the Job and Flirting at work didn't seem to have made the list! So..Have YOU any creative examples of skiving off, either from your workplace (It doesn't have to be from Personal experience!) or that you may have read about?

Everyone does it. I feel asleep in my old job just once it was that boring and was caught by one of the big wigs lol but I talked my way out of it. I am surprised flirting did not make the list. The easiest way of skiving in my last job was to walk around with a bit of paper and pretend you were looking for someone or something and chat to everyone you see. The same can be said of my new job except replace paper with letter lol.

I haven't got much time slacking off at work.. but i just had a few free time now that the project is almost over.. but we are left with some minor preparations for the remaining items. My list should include: 1. watching series (downloaded to the pc from usb) 2. sleeping on the desk whenever feeling "sleepy" hehe 3. going out to buy something (ends up missing for about 1.5 hours) 4. going to the pantry to get water, meeting an officemate there chat for a while and would take no less than 15 minutes. hahaha Flirting = scrap this out, i think this won't make it unless they are texting or have their office communicator chat available. otherwise this is done more likely after office. hahaha :D

I was reading about one way of having a sneaky siesta at work..though it requires having your own office with a door, and not one with fish tank like glass walls! they suggested sprinkling the contents of a box of paperclips on the floor near the door, then lay down with your back to the door with a foot positioned to be hit by the door if it would be opened..so you have an excuse to be on the floor, and can hopefully respond fast enough after the door hits your foot..it would also lose points if the floor was uncarpeted,or had a patterned csrpet that would mark your face....

I used to procrastinate a lot at work, but I soon came to the conclusion that if I didn't finish all of my work during the day, I would have to stay late and finish it when everyone else had gone home from work. Now that I am self employed, I have learned that the sooner I complete the work, the sooner that I can have the rest of the day to myself to do anything that might need to be done at the time. I am losing weight at the moment, and like to be able to get out of the house during the day at least once for a walk, and this is made a lot easier when I finish all of my work as quickly as I possibly can.

Some people just want to put in the maximum time they can at work,so long as they're being paid by the hour..Me,I'm the opposite..I don't want to spend any longer in there than I have to! I'd be interested in some angle I could do in some business of my own,maybe..Haven't figured one out yet, though!

When I was a contractor earning stupidly-large amounts of money, I used to pop off to the loo every time I was annoyed with my job. 10 minutes of, er... relieving myself and I'd earned some extra cash. It made it easier to keep my motivation up. I actually put together a list of ways to avoid working for a humorous article a while back... let me see if I can find it. Yup, here: http://spikethelobster.hubpages.com/hub/Avoiding-Work-Ten-Ways-to-Look-Busy-in-the-Office (that's not a referral). I think I've used most of those at some time in the past!!

Reminds me of the joke about the "worker" in distress outside their workplace with a friend nearby..a Passerby asks "what's wrong with him?" the Friend replies "He's busting to use the toilet but isn't due to clock in for another 10 minutes!" Thanks for the list!

Hello SheperdSpy! I feel awful when I slack off at work. I feel good about being productive and being needed. I don't know if all people think like that or if it is just me. I guess I'm just one of those rare honest types.

Productivity isn't my problem at work..that would be the "Too many Chiefs and not enough Indians" syndrome!
