Why is there a light in refrigerators?

United States

Hello fellow myLotters, I have been thinking about random things, and I happened to think of this. Why are there lights in the refrigerator? I mean, we are usually not supposed to have midnight snacks, or eat after a certain time to stay healthy, right? So why is there a light in the refrigerator when we generally don't eat after it becomes dark? Any answers? LOL

anglelee: Lights are fitted in refrigerators for having a clear vision of articles stored inside it. Even though we have lights outside it will not be possible for us to view fully and hence this arrangement.

Hi Angelee_27! I actually don't have a light on my refrigerator because it was broken during the installation. Not having a light in there is a big problem because I keep a water purifier in the fridge. At night when I want to get a drink i need to turn on the kitchen light. Some people eat late because they come home from work during the night. You would be surprised how many people come in those late hours. They don't want to wake up their spouses by turning on every light in the house.

Did you know you can replace the light bulb? You can get fridge bulbs at most stores.

Yes, deebomb is correct. You can find replacement bulbs at many stores. Most likely stores that carry actual refrigerators like home improvement stores, or even some department stores that carry different light bulbs. I am not sure if you have these stores where you live, but if you do, you can probably find them at: Wal-Mart Lowes Home Depot

Hello Ange. I thinks it so you can see if the elephant has left his foot prints in the butter. I remember when my grandmother had an icebox it didn't have any electricity and so no light. Now it;s nice to be able to see better even during the daytime. try loosing the bulb and see the difference or hold the switch off when you open the door. It's just to provide better light not just for midnight snacks.

You said to take this discussion lightly, but I do have a few good reasons.. 1. Up until a few years ago, we had terrible lighting in the kitchen and no window where the fridge was, so even in the middle of the day, it was hard to see. 2. If something was to spill, in the light we had, I couldn't see it until it was too late and had dried on, hard. 3. Water is allowed after dark isn't it??? Had to throw that last one in...

I have had the bulb burn out in our fridge a time or two. Even in the daylight, it gets pretty dark in a fridge. Or maybe as I get older, my eyes aren't that great! either way, I find it useful to have the light!

Certainly so. Even with the light on, I have to shift around and look for things sometimes. I can only imagine how that would be complicated by a dark fridge. I have a pantry without a light and find myself routinely wishing the builders of my house would have though to install one.

I think they put it in there so you can see in general. I mean ifyou think about it it's hard to see far back in there on the shelf so they put the light in so you can see. Plus just because you're not supposed to have midnight snacks doesn't mean people don't do it so it helps them out too lol.

Hi, Angelee_27. We need a light in the refrigerator just so that we can see inside of the refrigerator. Even in the day time too. It helps us to find any foods quicker. I feel that having a light in the refrigerator is very essential.

My flat is so small that the fridge is kept in a hallway. It's pretty dark there! It also shows that the fridge is working. As it's after three in the morning here, my mind isn't working too good just now, but there must be another good reason. Perhaps it's to match the light in the microwave!!!

Haha, now I am wondering why there is a light in the microwave!

I would say that the makers of the refrigerators had all others in mind. Meaning that if I turned on the light at night to get my snack and waked the others maybe I would be killed for disrupting sleep. lol Kidding! I would say that early mornings sometimes we sneak in there too, so why turn on the full kitchen light to get some water or a beverage.

Well, that does make sense. Also, I guess some homes are darker than others and even with lights on it's a bit hard to see what's in the refrigerator.

LOL...I laughed at the question thinking it was a joke, but it's actually a legit question. My answer is to see everything clearly in the refrig, especially items in the back. I also like the fact the light helps point out marks and spills as soon as they happen. The light helps me to spot the spots... (sorry if that is too corny)

It probably there when it's dark and you have all your shades closed and no lights on, the light in our fride doesn't work so that sucks. You guys better be thankful for the light you have in your fridge. But since we're not supposed to east after dark some people may get thirsty and want some water or something.

It's not a superstition, it's just not that healthy to do so. When you eat during the day, you have all day to run about and burn those calories. But at night, you generally relax and do not burn calories. Then, the calories turn into fat, and you gain weight.

Please don't take this discussion too seriously. I am just bored and decided to start a discussion about what was on my mind. I think it's a good "fun" discussion. A bit silly too.

So at night when you really need to fill a craving and you get up to get something out of the fridge you dont need to turn the light on and grab it while still in the dark. That's only my view on this light in the fridge mabey there is a true more complicated reason on why the light is in the fridge but i think it's only for seeing inside much easier.

Pretty sure its just to help out. The companies that make them don't care if we're healthy or not, and some people do eat after dark, or even in the middle of the night.

Hi angelee, I am really surprised who said not eat after dark. Millions eat after dark in most of world. In a city like delhi most people dont reach home before dark. Also it may not be healthy to have a midnight snack but it is not job of refrigrator to stop you. Yes light is needed but not every room is very highly illuminated and also if you want to just take something out you dont have to on all lights of the room/kitchen to take a fruit out of refrigrator. So i would say light is must.

Once my fridge light was busted , i find it not comfortable without light inside the fridge. Yes, esp during night time and lights were off and we open the fridge without light...how can we see what we're going to take inside. So, I think fridge having light really is a good idea,so we do never need to open any more lights when we check what's inside the fridge during late night when we are supposedly at bed and snoring have a good day jaiho®

Hi Do you really thinks that people don't eat much after getting dark.. I know many who used to eat midnight during watching movies. And that's not it.. People used to drink water in the night.. So this light is helpful for those who used to drink lots of water in night. Another thing.. Not all people having a brighter place in their kitchen. I mean there can be little dark area in the kitchen in some houses.. So finding small things in dark is little hard. I guess this much reasons are enough to have a light in the refrigerators.. In fact I was thinking to put that kind of small light in many other places too.

The light in the refrigerator is an aid for the person looking for something to eat or cook, to see them well. As you can see, if there is no light in the refrigerator, it will be dark inside so you wouldn't be able to see those that are in the backmost section of the ref.

Actually i think that the refridgerator light is a good thing. I tend to eat alot after dark and sometimes my father sleeps outside on the living room. The eay my house is laid out, my kitchen is walls are almost totally glass and if i turn on the kitchen light it would wake him up. I also don't think he approves of me sleeping after midnight. But somehow i just have alot of energy and can't bring myself to sleep.
