Nurses in nursing homes

I worked in a Nursing home twice before as a part time job to earn money in the same place and what I realize is that the nurses in there treat the elderly so poorly. I remember one of the elderly people needed a nurse to change them so I went and told one of the nurses that one of the residents needed a change and her response was "don't worry she'll be fine" and I said "no she won't be fine because the whole room smells" and she said "OK" but never came back. There was another time one of the elderly people wanted to go downstairs and play dominoes with me but the nurse screamed at her and told her to stay in her room and the nurse locked her in her room which was dark. I also didn't like how when the residents asked the nurses questions they would ignore them like they aren't important. I treated those residents much better than the nurses that some of them wanted me to stay when it was my last day working there. Imagine if it was their mom or dad being treated that way I bet they will go crazy but yet do it on others. Why do nurses treat them like this? It isn't fair.

First of all if you feel that someone is being neglected or abused you need to call the proper people. There should be a number posted for an ombudsman in the facility. There is NO excuse for this. I have been a CNA for 15 years and no nursing home i have ever worked at had locks on the doors due to the fact that it is a safety hazard. I'm not sure where you live but if the nursing home has locks on the doors they should be shut down. Not ALL people who work in nursing facilities are like this, i assure you. Not all who work in them should be in this field. Every place you go has a bad apple or 2. When and if you call someone, know that it is always confidential and you do not have to give your information when you call. I urge you to please call someone immediately about this situation.

Would you rather be made out to be the bad person or let the abuse of residents continue? It's a hard decision to make. Like i mentioned before though when making the call you are not obligated to give them your information like your name unless you want to.I understand the homes having locks on the doors leading to the outside of the building but to have locks on the doors to the resident rooms is a safety hazard and against HIPPA law.

That is really bad because they have to know that someday they will get old too and needs to be treated well at the last moments of their lives. Even if they aren't people I know I would still treat them well because they are human beings and are in that job, they are being paid and they should treat these elders properly. It truly isn't fair. I hope people like these are fired from there jobs.

I know exactly what you mean. I worked in a nursing home for many years when I was younger as a CNA until my back gave out on me. We had so many that treated the residents poorly, rudely, etc and you could tell that they were only there for a paycheck and did not give a darn about the people they were supposedly caring for. Not to mention we never had enough help to really take care of them the way they should be....at least not enough help that cared. I always wondered how they would feel if either a family member of theirs was getting treated that way, or even better if they were personally in that residents place how they would feel. It is really sad. I also had a really sad personal experience in one home as we - my husband and I - had to make the difficult decision to put his mother into a nursing home. We drove a truck cross country at the time for a living and could not take care of her ourselves, and due to demensia and alzheimer's disease she was unable to live by herself anymore. The nurses over-medicated her to make her calmer and sleep more so that she would not bug them about going home....it was actually documented in the chart for pete's sake, and it caused her to have a bad stroke. We lost her within a months time due to complications from the stroke and CHF. We moved her to a different home where she actually did get good care for the last few weeks when she was released from the hospital. We actually had to threaten to call the police to get them to send her to the hospital! We tried for quite a while to find a lawyer that would take the case, but it was a clanish little town and no one was brave enough to actually take the case against them. It is really sad and shameful what goes on in those places.
