Hello mylotters
My 6 yo kid has a cough for more than a week now and it is not yet subsiding. When he used to have a cough before, it usually takes around that time to clear or atleast to get milder. We usually don't take him to a doctor for coughs or colds because it just usually go away without taking all those antibiotics and other medicine the doctors are prescribing! But I am a little concern right now because as I said he is not yet improving. So how long must a cough be before taking a kid to a doctor?

depends on the cough and how ill they were with it, if they had a temp and seemed unwell id go after a few days, if they arent too unwell i was always told 7 days and see a doctor, for ANYTHING
i left my son 5 days he has an ear infection he wasnt particuarly unwell, i just knew he wasnt right, usually best to go with your intuition and i suppose its better to be sent home with the all clear, than not go at all and they get seriously ill x

That's what I usually do to. But it has been a few years now since the last time he I took him to a doctor. It usually just goes away, and I know that it is much better for the immune system if your body can fight sickness without any meds.

Take him to the doctor if he has high grade fever, difficulty breathing, coughing with wheezing, fast breathing, turning blue and barking cough. It is important that you should not give him otc antibiotics without checking first with the doctor. There are different generations of antibiotics that correspond with the strain of bacteria. Keep him hydrated to loosen his mucous.

I am not a mom yet but if I am now, I think I will be very careful when my child gets sick. I am sure that I will be paranoid even with a single cough. Most people say if a week already passed, then you have to see a doctor to know if there is something serious. But I can't wait a week to have something serious happen before I bring my child. At the first sign of cough, I sure will find myself and my child at the doctor's office.

I only take my kids to the Dr after I've tried everything at home. for a cough I gave them warm salt water to gargle with, milk and garlic, or garlic and ginger. The garlic is a natural antibiotic. I gave lots of water to flush the system out.
Maybe his tonsils are infected that is why it didn't heal. A week is a pretty long time to leave it unattended.

If it has not shown improvement in a week's time, you should take him to the doctor. It's better to err on the side of caution, rather than to risk that this is something that will become worse if left untreated.
While you may not like the use of antibiotics, there are times when they are necessary. Good doctors won't rush to prescribe an antibiotic these days, because there was such an overuse of them during the past decades (thus, giving rise to "superbugs"); however, they will prescribe when there is a clear need for one. You won't know until you take your son to see the doctor as to whether that is the case.

That is why I am hesitant to go to doctors. Most (if not all) doctors here prescribes anti-biotics even for common colds! Anyway, we went to the doctor yesterday and waited almost 2 hours until we decided to go home! She was supposed to be there when we arrived, and when we arrived there are already 10 patients ahead of us! My son's cough is improving now, I just did not let him eat anything that has common allergens.. I'll take him to the doctor again tomorrow if he will still have cough tomorrow morning.

If that is the typical situation with your doctor, it may be time to change doctors if possible.
If your son has ongoing issues with certain foods, it would be wise to remove those items from his diet (if not the family diet). It can't be much fun for him to have health issues from eating those things, and he is too young to realize that he can feel better by cutting certain items from his diet.

Usually after a week and still my kid/s is having a bad cough then I will surely take him to the doctor.
Sometimes we think it's the usual cough that can be treated with home remedies, but after week when there is no improvement- it is a must to have a proper medication.
have a good day

Yeah waiting a day or two is wise especially if the symptoms seem to be better. But a week my friend means something is not allowing to go away, so it would be best to do so as soon as you can.

When he was still a baby, we go to the doctor after just 2 days of being sick.. But that made his immune system weak.

We need to bring the child to the doctor when the cough has been going on for a week already. It could be chronic and could be dangerous for his health.

Hello damned_dle,
If your child has been coughing for more than a week then its time to take him to the doctor don't wait for it to leave on its on. I wouldn't take any over the counter medicine this can be a cold but can also be asthma so it's better to check with a doctor.

Try going in a day or so after his situation becoming like this. It may be something more complicated than what you think, I hope everything goes okay.
