Working Abroad?

Hello myLotters! :)
We all know how hard it is to earn big in our country. After all these years, the Filipinos have been always wanting to go overseas just to take chances of earning big even without the assurance of really having it. As a young professional, I am finding myself still not inclined to going abroad to seek for higher salary and instead would like to run a career in the country. But now, I am gaining some interest on going abroad. Many of my batchmates (high school and college) are now in different countries taking the challenges of being a stranger on someone's land. I want to seek for greener pastures. Is working abroad the answer? Have you tried working abroad? What country will you suggest me to go to if ever? Any more suggestions regarding this matter? Share your experiences in here and let's talk about it. :)

i've never worked abroad.. but i'm from the uk. northern ireland to be exact. it's the northern part of ireland, but it is under british rule, so even though we are not attached to mainland england, scotland and wales, we are still northern ireland. however.. unless you are willing to work really really long hours, or night shifts, making good money here is hard.. i've often even dreamed of just travelling over to england to try and get a job, so i know exactly what you mean! .. i say if you want to do it, do it! you only pass this way once!

yeah it's quite high.. for exmaple.. you imagine what anyone can get for $20.. i mean thats two mylot payouts, and $20 is a good amount of money to get a few things.. whereas $20.. is only £12 or £13 in my money.. so thats pretty much halfed.. so.. it's fairly high.. for example i can get american chocolate bars, shipped to me from a shop in the uk, priced at american prices, obviously converted, and then i pay the shipping.. and each bar works out at maybe 40p each including shipping? .. whereas if i went into a shop.. and bought something similar.. it would cost me anywhere between 60p and £1 .. so it's quite expensive yeah. and like likes of the post i had about marshmallow fluff, when its converted, its £1.99 our money.. but if i were to buy say a jar of peanut butter over here.. it would probably cost me around £2.50 maybe more?

Well, same here. Compensation here in the Philippines is seriously low compared to other countries. Also even if you are a professional, the salaries don't seem to match. Well, that's the reality when you are in a third world country like ours. Maybe you can try working abroad and then save up and invest for your future back here in the Philippines. Being a budding professional in your field, you still have a high risk tolerance and is still able to compete on the fierce employment battle outside the country. That is if you are really willing to take that challenge. Living outside your homeland is hard. But really, if you want to earn more go overboard. Just be sure to know where and what you are going into. I suggest go to Singapore or Australia. Those are the most common places for professionals here in the Philippines going abroad.

It will really depend on you. If you will let yourself be thrown out by the wave of overspending in there, then you will surely end up with nothing at all. It's just about being ingenious with the money that you will have in there. Once you can save from there and you brought the money here, you can suddenly feel the big boost in your earnings. Also, try to build up some contacts on the country of your choice. They can really help you on the ins and outs and give you tips and tricks in living abroad.

Oh yeah, I also heard that Australia and Singapore are good places to go to when working abroad. I know that there are many Filipinos out there. Though, the cost of living in other countries (e.g. Singapore) is also high. Will the higher salary compensate for that or the net effect will still be equal here in our country?

hahaa working abroad is an escape from poverty when our country cant offer us decent jobs with adequate salary to support a decent living. cuz nowadays unemployment is rampant which could also be blamed to overpopulation that the government is struggling to support even with the basic needs. me myself is planning to work in canada and would like obtain permanent residency.

I think Canada is a good place. You're staying there for good? Good luck on your decision. May you find happiness in there. :)

Working abroad is a good thing because it widens our perspective of life and experience. Furthermore we gain more exposure to stuffs, learning more in the process. I would love to work abroad, but only if i'm single. I don't want commitment to relationships when i'm working there, because it's more like a form of distraction to me.

Oh, yeah. It is really hard to go explore things in other places when you have a commitment in the place you came from. Working abroad really gives us other dimensions but it could also be risky at times.

Well, you are still young and don't have a family of your own yet. Go for that dream and seek for greener pasture. Just be sure that they are not in those places where there is racial discrimination. And be sure to be armed with knowledge and a lot of prayer.

Thanks for that wonderful advice, SIMPLYD :). Actually, one of my concerns would be the different cultures other countries have. Have you been working abroad also? What country? Any more tips? :)

10 years ago, i resigned from my job in a bank and studied caregiving. I was there in the far metropolis, working wile waiting for an employer for more than 4 years, but none took me. I was targeting Canada.
I went home only to find out from a heart to heart talk with my husband and daughter that they don't want me to go abroad, nor them go there also with me. They said they just want a simple life with some comforts only here in the Philippines. That woke me up and there i simplified my life and i am happy, i did.
Actually before you go to a certain country you have to study their culture. You can do that with the aid of the internet.

What a nice story. At least you still end up being happy. Yes, you are correct that I can equip myself with other countries' cultures with the help of the internet. But I'm not sure if I will be emotionally prepared for that haha! Thanks for sharing your story. :)

Working abroad is not easy, but sadly, working in the Philippines does not give that much compared to working abroad. Most of my batch mates are also working in different part of the world. It is not easy, but they earn fast and they are able to save at the same time. They are able to help their families and they are able to prepare for their future as well. Singapore is a good city, Some of them are in the UK... it depends on your field of study. I also think that working abroad is a good idea. I love traveling and living in a different country gave me a chance to see new places. It is not easy being far from our families, but you work for them, and you work for yourself to be successful.

I believe only those who benefit from the remittances that are sent to the relatives are the ones who think they are rich but i know the Overseas Filipino workers themselves aren't really enjoying themselves out there. .but i do understand how hard it is to work abroad, the only thing that kept them from going crazy is because there's a lot of filipino communities out there. have a nice day

Yes, you just have to do some sacrifices sometimes if you want to achieve your goal and it will benefit your loved ones. Thanks for the share. :)

One of the thngs that you sshould do is read the countries culture, people and it's facts about the government and it's laws. then check for man power agencies that are rgistered by COA or POEA that are hiring to that countries. then, check your capabilities if it matches the skills, or you can go for a training first before you can get to the interview so that the chances of being approved will increase. lastly, pray that you will become successful there. have a nice day

Hi LK! :)
Thanks for those advices. How long does it take normally for an application abroad? A friend told me that it can last for years at some cases. I think there are direct employers who are hiring from our country. I think that way would be better rather than going through a manpower agency. I am also aware of the training required before you can readily go work abroad. :)

I think if you have money and enough time then you can go anywhere in the world because there are plane facilities these days and in no time one can fly from the one country to the other. It all depends on you pocket.
I would travel different places if I had enough of the time and the money.

Uhm, I think you have misunderstood it. I am talking here about going abroad not to travel but to work and earn money. :)

Going abroad to work is running in my mind for years but I still have no guts to do it. There are pros and cons of any decision, for a bigger amount of earning which is a month earning abroad vis-a-vis a year earning here in the Philippines, you may losing the precious time with your family. For a mother like me, it will be a big decision to make.
For your questions, I don't think that working abroad is the only answer to financial problem. I am thinking of alternative works to supplement my income from work. Today that there are news that one popular college will transfer near my place, I am thinking of having a boarding house for rent to students and other opportunities from it. Maybe, just look around for other opportunities like tutorial or small business. If you still want to go abroad, choose a country where you have friends or relatives that already established their career in that country. It would be better if there is someone who could help you in starting your life in a foreign country. Maybe, if I have the opportunity, I will choose Canada because it offers a family status in the future.

Hmm..Canada. I've been thinking about that country also. The problem is that I don't have relatives in other countries. Oh, well.
